Could somebody please pin "how to use MSFS with VR"

At this point, I don’t care about what the best settings are. I just want to get it working. I’ve been working on this for two hours now, and I haven’t even gotten to understanding the first step of what I need to do, other than setting up my headset in Microsoft Mixed Reality. I can’t figure out what’s next. But that’s neither here nor there. What I’m asking here is a that a step by step tutorial be pinned to the top of the forum for first time users.

(The “How to activate VR” page in the top pinned link is a blank page for me in Firefox)

I need to understand every… single… step… on how to set up and start MSFS using a VR headset for the first time, in my case a Reverb G2. I’ve never used VR before, and I know nothing.

I’ve been searching these forums, google, and I’ve watched several videos on what settings to use, I’ve searched through the OpenXR page, but all it says is “Start your application (MSFS) and hit ctrl-f2 to bring up the menu”. I have yet to find a first time user every step you need to do to start using it description everywhere. It seems like all VR users know automatically how to use their equipment, and they love sharing their favorite settings, but I don’t know how to get this thing working at all. (MSFS keeps crashing on me at the moment with the headset connected, I assume it’s because I need something running. It was fine before I connected the headset.)

I’m positive there’s more to it than that… do I start up Microsoft Mixed Reality first???

Again, I’m going to keep searching, since it seems the information I need is sprinkled all over the place with no single guide to “Hey, this is your first time? Do this”

What I’m asking for is… It would have been a huge help if a “Hey, this is your first time? Do this” post was pinned at the top of either the General or Hardware VR forums.

I’ve never used VR before and I know nothing about it. I’m sure there will be many people in the same boat as me going forward as VR becomes more popular.

I assume we’re going to need several posts. For instance, I don’t use Steam. I have the Store version. I do have Steam installed on the computer, do I start that for some reason?

Back to basics…

Ignoring MSFS totally for a moment, can you confirm the following…

  1. When you run the Windows Mixed Reality, does it work ok and you see the cliff house environment in the headset?
  2. In the Microsoft Store can you confirm you have OpenXR and OpenXR Tools showing as installed in your Library?..

  1. CTRL + F2 I believe relates to the OpenXR Toolkit, which you do not specifically need at this point. Making sure VR is working on your PC first then getting it working in MSFS are your first steps…

  2. Once you have confirmed points 1 & 2 above, run WMR, then run MSFS.

  3. With default MSFS settings and VR working on your PC you should see the text “Press CTRL + Tab to switch to VR”, if you see that give it a try - the on-screen display should change to showing a left and right eye view and you should see the menu screen in your headset.

If the above works you should also be able to start a flight and switch to VR.

Give the above a try and report back.

Great, thanks.

  1. Yes it works. I’m still figuring out how to get around in it but it works.
  2. Yes, well, sort of… The purple one looks like your picture, what you show as the Open XR logo for the tools, it just says OpenXR-Toolkit, and a windows logo.

Starting MSFS now…

As said, that’s the toolkit which you don’t need.

There’s also no need to start WMR first. That will only slow things down considerably while MSFS is in 2D.

Just made my first VR flight, KASH to KCON in the Warrior… pretty amazing, very realistic.

Performance was very good, as well, i7-11700 / 64GB / 2070 Super - I was perfectly happy with performance. Pretty much high across the board with a couple of Ultra.

I have a 3080TI coming tomorrow, I’ll be interested to see the difference.

I imagine all the answers to my questions exist in one place somewhere? Like, your comment about not having to start the WMR?? Obviously, I’ve got a lot to learn. I’ll keep searching, thank you for helping me get started.

It would be nice to have a step by step guide pinned at the top, as I noted, for many different configurations. I don’t know why the links to what seem to be might be answers to some of my questions in the one pinned post at the top of this forum aren’t working for me.

I usually bind my ‘start VR’ key press to ‘Ctrl-Spacebar’, because it is easy to feel that with the headset on. Also Spacebar brings up the in flight triangle menu up on top.

Also, eventually get the face gasket that allows you a wider FOV than the stock G2 face gasket.

I also have my middle mouse key set to ‘center menu in VR’; Which you will need when you go into VR for the first time and the VC view is asll messed up.

If that does not work, (when you first enter VR and cant center your view, press the ‘Windows’ button on your keyboard once, then press it again to re-enter MFS VR virtual cockpit. Then clicking the center mouse button centers the VC view

The G2 is probably the best headset to use with FS2020 and VR.

set up the Windows Mixed Reality app settings so it automatically boots up when you boot up your Windows/PC

VoiceAttack or similar is very useful for VR, e.g. I use it to switch between 2D and VR by simply saying the phrase “Virtual Reality” and likewise to reset my view I simply say “centre view”.
I use VoiceAttack for just about every VR sim/game so I don’t have to fumble around finding keys while I have my headset on or for that matter remember different keys for each piece of software.

VoiceAttack is available as a demo limited to 20 voice commands which is certainly enough to set up some basic commands, e.g. switching to VR and/or re-centering your view point. :+1:

I use Voice Attack, didn’t realise you can instruct to go into VR, what’s the command to leave VR? Thanks

Should be the same - it’s a toggle

No it is`nt… Pimax 8k is…

That’s the thing with VoiceAttack you can set it up pretty much how you like, all you need to know is what you want to say for a command and then assign that voice command to a corresponding key press.
So in this case when I say “Virtual Reality”, I have VoiceAttack set to mimic that I have pressed the CTRL + TAB Keys to toggle between 2D and VR, or VR back to 2D.

I use small pieces of Velcro on the most often keys I need, so far this system works for me.
