CowanSim S76C++

I complained above about not being able to see any precise indication of how I was changing vertical speed. In fact you are shown this, on the same small annunciator that’s used for setting a target alt:

The trouble is, if you have tooltips enabled, the annunciator is completely covered by the tooltip which appears when you select an option on the autopilot panel:

You don’t see what you can’t see.

I’ve never understood why we don’t have an in-cockpit toggle binding for tooltips. The lack is not just a stupidity but an obvious stupidity. When you don’t need a tooltip, you need not to have tooltips. But when you do, you don’t want to have to go out to Settings to get it.

Edit: I wondered if I should create a Wishlist request for a Tooltip toggle. Turns out there already is one. And I’ve both posted in it and voted for it.

Pity I can’t vote for it twice.

Tested again with 1.1.0 in MSFS 2024 and still feels terrible for me. A little bit better then at release but still absolutely a fun killer and therefor useless for me.

  • flight model feels absolutely unsmooth and jittery (SAS ON)
  • a constant right turn during cruise flight (SAS ON)
  • after switching back from ATT to SAS mode, the ingame trim gets not resettet
  • still eradic torque changes
  • T5 nearly always too high
  • very sensitive on collective, so its very hard to do a stable controlled descent in hover or to smoothly settle down
  • sometimes the heli just drops to 500fpm sinkrate or just pitches up the nose to 45+ degrees without any chance to counteract afterwards
  • it just feels wrong and incompatible with MSFS 2024 and is therefor absolutely no fun for me

Cheers

What mod do you mean? If you mean the actual S76C++ then it’s available to be bought in the marketplace inside of MSFS.

The newest update for the CowanSim S76C++ is live! This release brings Xbox controller fixes along with refinements to flight handling, systems, and visuals.

🎮 Xbox Controller Fixes

The biggest issue reported by Xbox pilots was with the anti-torque pedals. That’s now fixed and tuned. You can now choose whether your pedals self-center or not in the controller settings. Correct helicopter behavior is non–self-centering, since these are tail rotor pedals and not airplane rudder pedals—but the choice is yours. Collective sensitivity on A/B buttons were also tuned for smoother inputs.

⚙️ Full Changelog

- Fixed/tuned Xbox controller anti-torque pedal bindings and brought back self-centering.

- Note: You can choose to bind them to self-centering or non–self-centering in the Xbox controller settings. Correct for a helicopter is non–self-centering, as it is not a rudder; it is a tail rotor. Choose as you wish.

- Tuned collective sensitivity/steps for Xbox controllers using the A and B buttons.

- Tuned the ITT temperature constant scalar to fix T5.

- Tuned flight model for better cyclic behavior. Not a 100% fix due to internal code, but drag was reduced and handling improved.

- Tuned correlators for pitch and the tail rotor for more balanced flight.

- Tuned autopilot for respective flight model changes.

- Fixed attitude retention mode (ATT), which behaved like SAS instead of holding an exact attitude when SBY mode was on.

- Fixed random autopilot bugs.

- Set autopilot to OFF when starting on a runway or helipad so the pilot can choose to use it.

- Enhanced the systems.

- Fixed minor modeling issues.

- Some cockpit textures upscaled to 8K and reworked. They will look different in 2020 vs. 2024. This is a 2020 product compatible with 2024.

- Fixed tail rotor blurred blades glossiness.

- Changed the front wheel code to self-center when stopped. It’s a free-castering wheel, not physically linked to steering when stationary.

✨ This update makes the S76C++ smoother, more immersive, and more realistic to fly. Whether on console or PC, you’ll notice the improvements immediately.

The selfcentering is basicslly a must to fly any chopper in this game with the xbox controller. it makes it actually more realistic then not having it. You cant really judge where the antitorque is if its non centering, you cant make small corrections fast. You can use it just like pedals if you have selfcentering.

The heli setting for the xbox controller has non selfcentering and the collective on right stick, but both of these makes it harder to fly then the ordinary controller setup for planes.

Its much more important to look sround on right stick and control the antitorque as they should be controlled.

If I buy it in FS20, you have it then also in FS24?

Yes. It’ll show up in 24 a day or two later, you may have to enable it though.

What is a shame is how MS-Asobo treat the Xbox or Pc customers with a gamepad, after 5 years (FS20-24) the rear triggers still are half path each trigger of the same axis, and after ask for that many times since then. And they pretend that you use the triggers like pedals, where you don´t know where is the position or the amount movement that you have done. If someone can fly an helicopter decently in that way would be incredible, or move the collective with buttons and not an axis in the gamepad…

The same for plane thrust if you want to move them with triggers

I use in PC right stick for pedals and right trigger with collective and thanks to FSUIPC (not available in Xbox), it is a full-precise movement, but we shouldn´t need FSUIPC only for that basic control, that is normal in other flight simulators or car racing simulators, where the trigger is the thrust obviously since always.

And they want go now with the PS5 gamepads haha, making people frustrated and make them think that they can´t fly a helicopter or an airplane well.

This single livery makes the CowanSim S76C++ Livery Pack 1 totally worth it for me and IMO.

And since this addon as well as CowanSim’s recent updates for their entire lineup, I find that I don’t want to fly any other helicopter addons - unless I want to fly military helicopters. Simply outstanding verstility and controllability within the MSFS platform now (which now includes the previously horrible H130 and 500E - which are now a joy to fly IMO).

I really really like what CowanSim has delivered. :+1:

How is this one after the recent patches? The recently released livery pack includes my local air ambulance so I’m contemplating a purchase, but it seems on release opinions were mixed.

Thanks

Are you talking MSFS 2020 or MSF2024?

This was for 2024. Although, it might have been one of the livery addons I purchased in 2020 (so it would become available for the 2020 addon within 2024).

The sooner I don’t have to buy stuff in 2020, just to get them in 2024 the better. The Marketplace purchase ambiguity is the worst part about buying stuff from the Marketplace to support Asobo/Microsoft and the platform directly.

I was more meaning your statement regarding the enjoyability of the helicopters. So I assume now you play in and ment 2024.

Not entirely.

With CowanSim’s implementation of their Force Trim keybind inherent in the addon, it gives their addons that functionality in 2020 (which makes ALL the difference for me and my spring centered joystick)

I went ahead and bought the S76 and I love it. Once I figured out the autopilot, it’s a dream to fly. Very happy with my purchase.

Same. I like small, simple helicopters. They are what I know in real life and probably where I would spend my time even if money was no object. I really didn’t “need” the S-76 but I wanted a helicopter with an autopilot and I’ve enjoyed Cowan’s other models on both X-Plane and MSFS2020. The Sikorsky has been my main fly for weeks now. I love it! Looks great! Sounds great. Flies like a helicopter. One issue that I have found a workaround for. On XBOX with a controller, the collective will occasionally be controlled by the autopilot even with all channels off or in “SAS”. This has only happened when I disconnected with the “STBY” button on the Mode panel. Now, if the collective is coupled, I first deselect “Col” before pushing either “STBY” or switching from ATT to SAS. Also, I really REALLY wish I could permanently ditch the copilot without needing to do it each flight with the ipad.
