I read some articles regarding cpu and gpu with this sim. It has been stated that is cpu bound. Im running a 2080ti slight overxloxk and a 9700k oc to 5.2. When running the sim my GPu is at 98 percent and cpu at 50 percent. So if it was cpu dependent wouldn’t my gpu usage be way lower than 98 percent and cpu usage way higher?
I was thinking of upgrading to a 10700k and next year go with a 3080 gpu. But if upgrading to a 10700k with hyperthresding won’t benefit me compared to what I’m running now then it would be a waste of money. I would just go with a 3080 and upgrade to a reverb 2 next year.
Any thoughts or ideas? I want to get the best performance I can.
I honestly don’t think you’ll see much of an improvement with the 10700k, especially for the price. Intel’s generational improvements have been terrible, so if you’re gonna upgrade your CPU I would at least wait a month or two for MSFS benchmarks to come out for AMD’s new Zen2 CPU’s when those come out.
Also, a game that’s CPU bound won’t necessarily fully load the CPU, usually only synthetic loads do that. Especially a game like MSFS which only runs on DX11.
I’ve just upgraded from a i7 4 core laptop (16Gb ram) running a 2080ti in a eGPU and that was mostly CPU bound but got around 40fps at 3440 x 1440 (ultra wide) with my settings mainly high some ultra
Just built a desktop with a i9 10850K (64Gb ram) running the same 2080ti and same monitor and now I’m most defiantly GPU bound. In the same circumstances I’m getting around 54fps but some of that will be down to an overall faster computer, IO, motherboard, better cooling, blah, blah.
My next move is to switch up to a 3080/90 once money allows and see where I’m at.
I’m running a samsung nvme, 32 gigs of 3200 memory, and have an asus z390 maximus hero. I think it would be best to wait for more patches and game optimization and see what happens. I also agree a better fpu would be best, since I will be upgrading my vr with the reverb 2. Im also running a custom open water loop cooling the cpu and gpu
I want to stay on the intel platform. Right now I prefer intel over amd. I do remember having an amd Athlon cpu in the late 90s. That was a great cpu. Killed intel at the time.
I wouldn’t rush into anything for sure. Wait a bit for ASOBO optimisations and maybe, just maybe, see if the new AMD CPUs and GPUs announced later this month will substantially improve your system. If not, I personally wouldn’t bother to upgrade yet.
Yeah if you’re looking at staying with Intel then I wouldn’t bother with any kind of an upgrade (CPU or GPU). You likely won’t notice a difference moving to the 10700k, its practically the identical CPU with a slight clock boost. And unfortunately that seems to be the way intel is going these days, with no changes in the foreseeable future.
I wouldn’t even bother with a 3080, IMO it was a botched launch I wouldn’t risk getting a bad card (of which there seem to be plenty) only to still be CPU bottlenecked in MSFS.
So basically if you’re only looking at improving performance in MSFS and you’re not willing to go to AMD, I would save your money.
I won’t be upgrading to the 3080 until next year. By that time any issues there are would of been found and corrected. If im upgrading my vr it would be beneficial in upgrading my gpu. Also upgrading to a 10700k would give me higher clock than the 9700k and have hyperthreading as well. I would not be upgrading just for this sim. I guess I should of phrased the question as if I was to upgrade the cpu or gpu today, which route should I go. I dont always upgrade every generation. I went from a 7700k to a 9700k. I think it would be beneficial in my other sims such as dcs world and other games. Plus my son gets my old parts.
