My Xeon quadcore is not fast enough for my GTX 1080TI. The cpu render thread is approximately 3x slower than the gpu render thread. Default HD 1920 settings for the newly installed latest release give 20 FPS.
I understand all the LOD and AA tweaks, but regardless the CPU is too slow. Also the Xeon MB is PCI 2.0, which may well be throttling the 1080TI as the X16 bandwidth is 75% less than PCI 4.0.
I have my eye on some of the AMD 6 or 8 core with a PCI 4.0 MB as they give good performance on a budget, but I’m also interested in Intel solutions.
cheers

MSI B550m pro-VDH wifi and a 5700X will give you great value especially as the 5xxx series can take advantage of PBO undervolting (e.g. with it my 5800X boosts over 5GHz). I suggest a cooler rated 185w or better in case you ever want to upgrade further.
PS. with this and your 1080ti I reckon 45-55 fps on mostly ultra settings should be do-able with no LOD issues, maybe even 60+ fps
I had a 1080ti, so, even 12700K could not load it in some cases. So just get the best processor based on your budget.

Greetings -
I have a 1080 ti GPU paired with Intel i6700k CPU @ 4.2 GHz 4 cores with HT on, ASUS z270e mobo, no overclocking
I admit rather dated PC, still at 1080p resolution, TLOD 150, all other settings on ‘ultra’ (except air / land / sea traffic and airport workers / vehicles) I have solid 40 fps
The best recommendation I can give is to select the fastest 8 cores CPU (highest GHz) you can find
More than 8 cores is currently rather useless for MSFS
My CPU is rather dated but its frequency is still faster than many 12/16 cores out there and with HT on the 4 physical + 4 logical cores perform well
Having 8 physical cores at, say, 4.6 / 4.8 GHz will be ideal
Hope this helps

That fits in well with my suggestion. My other thoughts were a future upgrade to a 5800X3D once prices come down.
The architecture of the CPU plays an important role. For the sake of interest I asked an acquaintance with 11900K @5.2 Ghz (locked) to run CPU-Z Single core test.
I was surprised when 12700K showed the best results at 4.8GHz (locked)

Thanks everyone, I noticed the 5700X offers good value since it’s price was reduced recently.
The MSI B550m pro-VDH motherboard looks flexible, I don’t need wifi because I have a 1Gb network. It has 7 front panel USB ports, but I’ve never seen a case with more 4.
A 185W cooler is a good idea, and yes the 5800X3D is an obvious future upgrade with such a huge L3 cache.

Do you have budget for a B550 mobo and 5800X3D? That CPU would be better than any current Intel CPU at least for this sim!

The wifi adapter also has Bluetooth 5.1 which can come in handy. I actually upgraded from this to the MSI MAG B550m Mortar and have noticed no difference in performance whatsoever, infact my ram overclocked (a little) better on the Pro-VDH.
Yes Bluetooth would be useful for some peripherals.
Don’t have an X3D budget yet. You pay a lot for the large L3 cache.
A PCI 4.0 motherboard and 4.6GHz boost will be a great upgrade.

This. I bought an MSI B550-A Pro for $120. I added a PCIe WiFi 6 / Bluetooth card, since that MOBO doesn’t have it built in. Very solid VRM - especially for its low cost. I run a 5800X3D that I bought for $320. It’s the best AM4 CPU for MSFS. Cache is King.
