I’ve been using Flight Sim since the days of Flight sim 2, and planning to upgrade my system to enjoy FS2024 as well. I know the debate still continues to this day on whether AMD or Intel is better, but wanted to get some opinions for my situation and see if anyone had good/bad experiences.
Here are my current specs:
CPU: Intel i5-8600k
RAM: 32 GB
GPU: GTX 1080 Ti
The only game I play on my desktop is Flight Sim, and have got 30 FPS and just been pretty happy with that. I have a 2k and 4k monitor, so going up in resolution for fs2024 would be great. I realize I’m limited with the GPU right now, and plan to upgrade that. Where my question comes in:
I can build an AMD system with the Ryzen 7 9800x3d, or I can go with the Intel i7-14700k. If I went with intel I’d save about $283 that I could put towards a new GPU. For those of you that use your systems for mostly msfs-2024 and then general use, which do you prefer?
I used to discourage buying AMD CPUs, but now I wholeheartedly recommend AMD X3D series. After 30 years of using Intel, I switched to AMD and have no regrets. Until recently, I had an Intel i9 13900K but I returned it to Intel for obvious reasons and they refunded my money. I bought a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and on its release day a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. I gave the Ryzen 7 7800X3D to my son. I don’t regret switching from Intel to AMD and plan to stick with AMD CPUs for a long time because (right now) there’s nothing better for gaming.
I’ve had no issues with AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D or the motherboards designed for Ryzen X3D CPUs. Additionally, my latest CPU, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D stays cool during gaming like snow in Antarctica.
Your current graphics card is too weak to fully enjoy 4K resolution. After upgrading to a faster CPU you will also need to consider investing in a better GPU.
Thanks this is helpful! I used to be an AMD guy then made the jump to Intel, and thinking about going back. I assume that the 9800x3d would handle most daily tasks outside of gaming?
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D performs exceptionally well in everyday use. It’s more than sufficient for gaming, watching movies, creating spreadsheets in Excel and other similiar daily tasks on a PC.
There is just no comparison right now. AMD X3D is the way to go. You will notice a big difference from the old cpu you have currently. Just remember to use a fast NVME gen 4/5 SSD as well.
I get very decent 4K gameplay with my 3090 Ti 24GB. The 4070Ti Super is about 20% more powerful. Plus it has frame generation, which mine does not have. I think 16GB VRAM is OK. Some people are reporting higher VRAM usage than that, but I think those are special use cases. Mine has never gone over 12GB, and is usually around 6-8GB with the type of flying I do.
When it comes to GPU I recommend choosing a Gigabyte model due to its high-quality coils, which do not produce coil whine like those of other manufacturers.
