CPU upgrade: hedging my bets

I went back to a 2023 thread on this topic and found a lot of good info. Here’s a snippet from a member whose opinion I respect greatly. Hope it helps.

For MSFS2020 which is effectively single threaded where it matters, probably the 7900X3D. With the change to 2024 nobody knows, apparently the new sim is properly multithreaded and so the 8 cached cores on the 7800 possibly could be better than the 6 cached cores on the 7900, it’s 30% more processing capacity.

I went through this dilemma, just before MSFS 2024 was announced, and I went with the 7800X3D because of the price and also it’s a lot easier to use. With the ryzen 9 series you have to faff around with disabling the non-cached CCD, or pinning processes to cores etc. Especially on a 7900 you do not want to disable the CCD as then everything you run is sharing only 6 cores, so then you’re into trying to get Process Lasso or similar working.

I upgraded to a 7950X3D and found that I needed to do a lot of work in Process Lasso to optimize FS20 performance. Once I did the work I’ve been very happy with the results. I posted an extensive thread with test results of my tuning process. Bottom line, the 7800X3D is the ‘Easy Button,’ while the 7900X3D and 7950X3D can perform a little better with some dedication to tuning.

I didn’t want to wait for the 9xxx-series. Nothing wrong with that, though.
