Have i9 10900K RTX4080 6GB RAM 4TB SSD. Flying 4K 3840x2160 ultra settings lod150. I should be getting better fps.I know 4080 FG effectively doubles FPS to 70, but I should be getting more than 36 FPS. Looks like CPU is bottleneck. Am considering upgrading MB & CPU to 13900K to clear bottlenec. Any suggestions.
My suggestion would be to go AM5 instead. They are better for Flight sim, run a lot cooler than the Intel and the AM5 m/b you get will stay valid for much longer that the latest Intel.
Edited for correction: AM5 is new and should be supported for at least 2 more gens. Intel 14th gen will be the same socket as 13th gen, with 15th gen being a new socket.
The 7800X3D matches, if not beats, the 13900KS in 90% of games (including MSFS)!
Well, 14th Gen is now just a refresh of 13th Gen, so same socket. I think the performance uplift will mostly be from pushing in more power, clock speed, and heat, however.
You’re right! I hadn’t looked for 14th gen news for a couple of weeks!
Right now I think the best choice would be the AMD Ryzon 7 7800X3D, but I have the Intel i9-13900K and I’m very happy with this processor. It performs exceptionally well in VR too with a 4090 and has 24 cores and 32 threads (7800X3D only has 8 cores and 16 threads), so should take advantage of MSFS 2024 improved threading model as well.
AMD would be the obvious choice perhaps, right now at least. But I suspect 2024 is going to be a bit of a game changer on that front, with the improved multi-threading, and core count may be an important factor once more. So if it were me I’d hang on if you can until 2024 is out, or at least some info comes out about how strong these improvements are.
Why not a Ryzen 9 7950XSD? Or are you looking solely on price?
That’s a really good point! Waiting would definitely be the safest option.
However if I wanted a CPU right now and was worried about core count, I’d personally still go with AMD and get a 7900X3D for the extra clockspeed, extra cores, extra cache (and the fact it’s 3D cache of course).
It all depends what your individual plans and objectives are, whether you’re going to upgrade your CPU next year or stick with your CPU for 3-5+ years:
- If you’re planning to upgrade your CPU next year, there doesn’t seem to be much point in getting more than the 7800X3D right now (diminishing returns on money spent).
- If you’re planning to hang on to it for many years to come, the 7900X3D or 7950X3D would probably be a safer bet due to the higher core count. (Assuming that AMD will improve core parking/assignment to run everything else on the non-3D cache cores, freeing the eight 3D cores for the game to solely run on, in the future)
Disclaimer: In the current market I prefer AMD, so I’m probably biased. I also can’t see into the future, so all of this could be different by next year! ![]()
Yes you are right, if you opt for the 7950X3D then you are getting the same amount of 3D V-cache enabled cores, but also the 8 higher clocked cores without 3D V-cache. Some titles might not play well with the dual chiplet design and you might end up displabling those extra cores, but for MSFS 2024 I think of the two the 7950X3D is probably the better option.
For MSFS2020: Wait for Intel 14th gen -expected to release in September- or pick an AMD chip with 3D VCache now.
Also, MSFS 2024 is supposed to be better at multi threading, so it could be your current CPU will perform vastly better with the next iteration of our favorite flight sim.
