I been reading a lot about the new Ryzen 5000 series. I currently have the Ryzen 7 3600X pair with a RTX 2070 Super GPU. Will upgrading to the Ryzen 5600X be worth it for FS2020? I have one in my cart in Walmart just not sure if it is worth it for $425.
My understanding is the 5000 has superior âsingle threadâ performance. How much you would notice I canât say but MSFS does respond well to single thread architecture.
At $425 I would say, âpull the triggerâ. But thatâs just me.
They are about 20% faster I believe
Ryzen 5000 has a 19% IPC (instructions per clock) increase over the 3000 series. The 5600X also has a higher clockspeed than the 3600X, so you should gain over 20% on single core performance.
If youâre currently âlimited by mainthreadâ itâs most likely very much worth it. If youâre âlimited by GPUâ, then youâll likely see very little benefit.
All in all the 5000 series CPUâs are great.
Hello,
I recently upgraded from a stock Ryzen 3600 to a stock 5600x and the noticed a huge difference, in 1440p everything is just super smooth (this is with a RTX 3070) in VR things are improved but not a huge difference but I think this is more to do with the VR optimisation.
I would say if you can source a 5000 series CPU definitely go for it! Itâs a lot faster than a 3600 and MSFS really really likes the fastest single core speed going. Itâs better than the intel 10900k is flight sim!
Upgrading from 2700x to 5800x, should be here in a few hours
It is a bigger bump for me then your setup but MS loves single thread and the smoothness should be worth it Iâd say, unless your strapped of course.
And you can always resell your old chip to offset part of the cost.
Iâm a AMD Ryzen 5600X user and its really a much better experience than the Ryzen 5 3600 i had at first.
Using the same B450 chipset with a bios update, so thatâs super convenient i must say.
Iâm having stutters anymore and a very smooth gameplay at 1440k, high, on a LG 34 inch ultrawide monitor.
Itâs paired with a AMD RX 5600 XT GPU and 32 GB 3200 ddr 4 memory.
So, if you can get hold of one, go for itâŠ
This gets posted here a lot, but this is the kind of performance increase you could see:

This processor costs $300 if you buy it from a reputable retailer. It just takes some patience watching the stock checkers, but alerts for the 5600x and 5800x come up almost every day:
Looks like there are some up for sale right now as I post this even.
I just upgraded my CPU to a 5600x and have all setting set to Ultra, Terrain LOD at 200 running at 1080p. I also have an RTX 2070 Super. I am getting 50+ FPS is most areas, 30+FPS in Midtown Manhattan. Everything is limited by GPU and not getting âLimited by Main Threadâ any more.
Wow, thatâs great to know as I also run at 1080p. I have made up my mind and will get it asap.
Thanks everyone!
Hi- Iâve just gone for the same upgrade. Any comments to share on performance improvement so I can get excited while I wait for it to arrive?
Yep going from 2700x to 5800x is a huge improvement, almost no stutter, everything drawing in properly and on time, even when hauling butt at 2000ft near KSEA in the TBM everything runs flawlessly. Also the in game Dev cpu/GPU monitor shows very balanced latency for both, which Iâm guessing is good
Guys,
I think I just confirmed and confirned again somethign really weird. I have a RTX 3070 together with a Ryzen 5 3600XT. It works very well with around 70fps at 1440p (ultra settings + 100% rendering).
However, Iâd love to fly in VR with my Quest 2. Unfortunately I get only around 35 fps with default VR settings (which are quite â â â â â â ), limited by main thread (CPU). So I decided to give a try with a 5600X, with strong hopes of gaining a few fps.
Crazy results: with all other settings strictly identical, the performance is actually LESS good with the 5600X compared to the 3600XT. I get on average 2 fps less when I play regular at 1440p and 7 fps less in VR !!! 100% waste of money.
FYI, I have tested with other games, or benchmark applications, and the result is completely different. Performance is always better (or at least identical) with the 5600X , EXCEPT in FS2020.
Have you checked that your RAM is working at the XMP profile speed in BIOS? CPU upgrade might have reset your BIOS. Ryzen loves fast RAM, and having the RAM running at lower speeds might well explain the difference youâre seeing.
Hi MortThe2nd,
Thanks for your input. Yeah, you are right, swapping the CPU does indeed reset my BIOS settings but Iâm really 100% sure everything was identical. My DDR4 was running in both cases at 3200Mhz (no XMP).
And please note that this weird outcome is not seen in other games or GPU/CPU benchmark applications. Only FS2020.
Did you perhaps have PBO enabled before but itâs not enabled now since the BIOS was reset? Check to see what speeds your cores are getting to when stressed.
Also did you update to your newest BIOS version and chooser version? Most AM4 motherboards received new BIOS versions to accommodate the 5000 series.
Hi Lyn,
You are right PBO was enabled but it was enabled for both CPUs. I made very sure there was no such difference with identical BIOS settings. Furthermore, as I said before, the same behaviour is not seen with other games or benchmark applications. In all other situations, the performance was better with the 5600X, except FS2020.
No! if a new processor got you 30fps extra then yes, but itâs not gonna do that so why bother, if you need more processing power for other things on your computer then sure, go for it, but for a game then stick with what you have.
For those who would be using the 5600X and might be puzzled with my previous findings, hooorayy I finally found a way to get more FPS out of my new CPU compared to the 3600XT. I confirm that with PBO, the 5600X performance is slightly lower than with the 3600XT, which is weird but real. However, using manual overclocking reversed this situation. Manual overclocking on the 3600XT (in my case) brought very little improvement compared to PBO, but the result is very different with the 5600X. I get a significant increase of FPS compared to PBO and around 10% increase compared to the 3600XT. My guess is that most of the difference comes from the difference of max frequency I can get with the 5600X (4600Mhz) compared to the 3600XT (4400Mhz). My assumption is that high CPU frequency is a key factor for good performance in FS2020.
Well yes. The âregularâ overclocking settings give you an âall-coreâ overclock. The maximum frequency you will get on an all-core overclock will be lower than the boost frequency you would get on a single core with basic settings (my 5800X boosts to 4850MHz single core (even without PBO), all-core I could only get to 4600MHz). And you are correct; Single core clock speed is way more important to games (this sim included) than all-core clock speeds.
The 3000 series chips didnât have this big of a single core boost clock, so doing an all-core overclock was a great way to go. With the 5000 series chips not so much anymore. They boost really well on a single core, and PBO gives this another bump up.
So if youâre mainly running games/sims; donât do an all-core overclock.
If youâre mainly doing productivity workloads, an all-core overclock might suit you nicely.
