CPU upgrade... Which is best with the 4090? i9 13900K or Ryzen 9?

Looking at a CPU upgrade, because I’ve just got the 4090, but my CPU is currently i7-9700K.

In VR (Reverb G2) I get blisteringly fast frame rates with this 4090 - in gliders, GA etc. i.e. 50fps or more sometimes, in almost all phases of flight (lowest frame rate in these aircraft is around 35-40fps…

BUT I’m a Fenix A320 nut, which I fly with 85% of the time, and this CPU drags down frame rates as low at 25fps when connected to VATSIM and FSTL on the ground at a big airport! EVEN WITH a 4090 - That is unplayable!

Granted, while at 35,000ft over unpopulated areas, I may get a frame rate of 48fps, but I’m looking to upgrade CPU now to get best performance in Fenix A320 in every phase of flight.

So…which CPU? i9-13900K or a Ryzen equivalent (and which Ryzen)? I fly in VR 100% of the time.

Also, what frame rates can I expect in VR with max demand, i.e. on the ground in the Fenix @ JFK + VATSIM + FSTL?

Grateful for your thoughts…there doesn’t seem to be a thread on this topic as yet…

Well, Fenix are currently updating to V2 which by all accounts will be better optimised. As an AMD user on the 5800X3D, I can say this CPU is remarkable for MSFS and it looks like the new 7000 series is even better. There’s plenty of threads on performance of these new 7000 X3D CPUs, I suggest taking a look at them.

I have the i9 13900k and get great performance with a rtx 3080. In MSFS with a PMDG 727-800 Just never been a big fan of amd. Not knocking AMD just prefer Intel . I have the cpu and gpu water cooled.

What frame rate are you getting in VR in the airliners at a major airport with other traffic?

The X3D are the fastest CPUs for msfs. You’ll get a good experience with the 5800X3D in VR over the 13900k.Price of the 13900k isn’t worth it imo unless you’re doing extra task outside msfs.

Since VR is your thing you’re better off going AMD. The 7000x3d have reports of burning . If you get the 7950x3D don’t get an Asus mobo.

Can you elaborate on issues with Asus mobo and newest Ryzens? I’m also in process of buying, getting 7900x3d, planning to pair with asus strix x670e-e.

No real issues, new BIOS updates are rolling out regularly and only a minority was affected. Generally speaking, you are pretty safe.

Thnx, been following that thread, to be honest didn’t notice the issue being raised about Asus. I’ll check again.

Thnx for your input

Since I was building a PC from scratch, and I knew I wanted an AM5 board I looked at several, including ASUS and others. I ultimately went with the ASRock X670E Taichi since I could see from the block diagram that none of the M.2 slots shared any PCI lanes with the x16 slot used for my RTX 4090. Not because of any other issues with ASUS or anything - I actually got my mb before getting my hands on a 7590X3d - the mb simply had the features I wanted. Been about 6 weeks now, no issues with MSFS or anything else - CPU temps in the 50s C while flying (not pushing it though, no busy airports, etc, but settings at Ultra and LOD between 300-400). I’m still just getting started with MSFS. Hopefully this helps. (no VR though).

Thanks. It seems all the rave is the 7950X3d…or variations of it. Nobody is even talking about the i9-13900K any longer. Fascinating…

That should tell you something!

Its obvious why… X3D cpus are the way to go in msfs. I always had intel cpus, but made the jump now to the 7800X3D.

But even with alm that CPU/GPU power, in KJFK you will have to reduce settings, you wont get much more than 30FPS in FENIX. V2 might be our hope tho with big performance improvements.

While Frame generation sounds so good, i disabled it, it doesnt work in the way id like it to.

I find frame generation doesn’t help with VR at all. Although my external frame counter shows double the fps, my actual performance in the headset is (I’m pretty good at visually gauging what my fps with reasonable accuracy) is exactly HALF what that number says and I still get black framing around the edges as I turn my head, indicating an actual fps in the headset of approx 30 - all the while the external counter says 60fps with frame generation on. This scenario is with a 4090 and an old i7-9700K, with Fenix @ JFK, Vatsim and FSTL. Are you suggesting my upgrade to an i9-13900K OR Ryzen 9 7950X3d will not make a difference under that workload? (I’m getting blisteringly amazing frame rates in GA aircraft and gliders even with my i7 perhaps 60fps or more a lot of the time). But, I fly Fenix 90% of the time on VATSIM at major airports…and hence Im looking to upgrade CPU. Will I see a difference under that workload?

Depends on what settings you are… on Ultra, FENIX at inibuilds KJFK, during landing or takeoff, my FPS can drop slightly below 30 even with a 7800X3D and 4070Ti OC…

But if you reduce LOD, it will be much better ofc.

My LOD is always at around 70.

I just built a new pc and finally got it up and running yesterday. I was coming from an i9 10900f with a 3080 and 32mb of ram. Wasn’t a bad computer, but I couldn’t run the sim in 4K smoothly like I wanted to especially in big city areas. I always would see some stuttering and lower fps. I fly mostly the PMDG 737’s, FlytheMaddog Md83/88 and the Fenix A320 and FBW A320.

I decided after much research to go with the AMD 7950x3d, rog crosshair hero x670e mob, 64mb ram at 6000mhz, a 4tb nvme ssd, and a 4090. Wow! Insane performance on ultra all settings…tlod 300 and old 200. I was blown away how incredible the sim is to fly now. Buttery smooth and incredible fps using frame generation with TAA or DLSS. 70-95 fps in the above mentioned airliners, and the cpu and gpu stay cool. 49-52 degrees C for my 4090. I understand I may have overdone it with my selections, but I wanted to be future proof for a while. Check out the AMD chips for sure!

Amazing…do you fly VR, and if so, what fps you gettin’?
