I am having an issue that seemingly cannot get rid of, and that is crackle, audiostutter as well as micro freezes, whenever i am flying over a region with 3rd party DEM data or “Mesh” data as other developers might call it.
While I am aware of the fact that a dem for a country might be a gigabyte in size or more and that this might create further “stress” on the system, I am not really convinced that this is the reason here.
1.)
many other people are using these DEM files and i dont see others complaining
2.)
my system is strong, 5900x, 3080ti , 64 Ram and MSFS on dedicated NVME m.2 SSD and should be able to handle this
3.)
some 3rd party airports are much bigger in filesize and that for a much smaller area and still my system does not get affected by that.
Rolling cache on my system is deactivated and no manual caches are present (Rolling cache is said to worsen the problem, while i cannot make out a significant difference to be honest)
Examples would be the Austria and Germany 20m DEM by Troglodytus and/or the Canary Island or Balearic Islands DEM files by mikea.at, all available for free on flightsim.to
Does anyone else have a similar experience and has figured out measures how to improve this?
I absolutely love ORBX’s mesh packages. I have found that, I wouldn’t really notice the mountains, but the mesh packages do an amazing job for the coastlines. It gives the coastlines detail, and instead of just the land merging into the sea, now you can see where places you just can’t easily access the land from the water.
But that said, I did buy the Switzerland mesh from FSDreamTeam for XBox. Now FSDreamTeam, I love their airports, but the mesh pack, I don’t know a single XBox user that it doesn’t slow down the user, giving stutters that seem to get progressively worse the longer you fly. FSDreamTeam’s response is that there is nothing wrong with the pack. I keep it unintalled, and each release give it a try again to see if there is some improvement. Maybe when I get a good PC, it might work good. But I am not all that upset about it for now, the truth is, I won’t notice if Switzerlands mountains so be shaped different, and Switzerland is entirely landlocked, so there are no coastal areas where I am missing the detail.
There has to be some secret that ORBX knows that other mesh developers don’t. Any ORBX mesh, it’s a nobrainer instant purchase from me. Meshes from anyone else now, I wait to get a review, specifically from an XBox user. I don’t think ORBX will ever tell what the secret is, but I’m hoping at some point its found, because I would absolutely love my coastlines all around the world in fine detail.
I imagine you are running into the same type of issue with your mesh packages.
Hi there I had crackling sound issues and this was ruining my experience with MSFS. Tonight I just tried this audio setting inside Windows itself. Miracle!!! It’s gone after many weeks struggling to deal with it.
I can definitely confirm the mesh issue. I have not tested it in all areas where I have add-on mesh, but British Columbia and Italian Alpes make trouble: visual stutters and sound crackling. As soon as I disable the add-ons the problem is gone. I may add, that I have a beefy system with a 12900K and a 3090 video card. I cannot say, since when I have the issue, but it is not so long ago, because some weeks ago, I could fly in the above-mentioned areas without any problems.
I recently updated my PC from AMD to an Intel 12700K CPU. I didn’t notice any issue previously, with Orbx free iceland DEM or any free DEM addon on flightsim.to. Now I have freezes (on CPU, network, sounds and display!) preceeded by heavy sound cracklings. This issue does not happen with Orbx, only with free DEMs on flightsim.to and on some regions only (new zealand for example). I have an RTX3090, this is not a perf problem, and I have multiple installed addons that work perfectly, with high FPS in VR. I completely reinstalled MSFS but it did not fix the issue.
The audio chipset on my new motherboard is not the same as the one I had before, it’s a realtek 4080. I deactivated the nahimic service and uninstalled the Realtek USB audio driver software (the software that you can find in the list of installed apps, not the driver by itself) and now this is way better, freezes seem less frequent, but I still experiment this issue which make the session unplayable.
I just uninstalled freeware DEM addons for now, waiting for Orbx to fix they payware addon to buy them (some issues appeared after last update, from what I read, and it’s visible in their free addon for iceland)
Still unuable to narrow the origin of this issue, because of multiples changes in a short period: new motherboard/CPU/audio chipset, new sim update, new flying playground (new zealand) and apparently there may have been some inner changes in MSFS engine related to DEM/Mesh, that could have impacted Orbx mesh? (the latest is pure speculation)
The last time I hit this audio drop issue, deleting my rolling cache cleared it up immediately. I believe this problem is in the base sim, as I have even encountered it without any add-on meshes.
