Crash Graphic card if MSFS 2024 installed in external drive

I’ve been experimenting a problem that in a first moment I thought it was caused by the interaction between MSFS 2024 and my graphic card (RTX 4070Ti).

It happened that MSFS crashed the graphic card if executed few minutes after starting the system. It was never in the same point: could be while navigating screens in career mode, or after spawining in ramp or in any other place.

The system was not down: I could enter into it using Remote Desktop, but the graphic card was completely out and I had to restart the system. This never happened if MSFS was executed some time after restarting the system, lets say 15 minutes or so. After that the sim was completely stable and I could fly for hours.

Some messages after restarting gave me a clue: Windows said that some USB device required more power than the system could provide. Of course I have a lot of USB devices connected, some directly to the PC and some other through a self powered hub.

I have a SSD external 4TB disk connected directly to the PC and I had MSFS installed there. I’ve changed MSFS installation to C:\ keeping my Community folder in the external drive and the problem has dissapeared.

I cannot classify this as a bug, because probably is caused by my hardware, but I’ve decided to share it and let moderators decide.

My config:
HP Omen 40L
64 Gb RAM
RTX 4070 Ti
1TB SSD in C:\ and 4TB SSD in external USB drive connected directly.

It seems to me that if MSFS crashed your GPU, the driver would crash as well and you would get a black screen or possibly a BSOD. I’m not sure if I understood correctly, but are you experiencing a full system freeze?

Not at all. As I said I was capable to get into the PC using Remote Desktop. Even I could execute applications like Word. But my 4070 would not engage until I restarted the system. It’s something weird, I realise, and this had not happened to me before in more than 30 years punishing my PCs with lots of different games and applications. You never end learning.

Yep, I’m really glad to see you’re user who enjoys learning and drawing conclusions. That attitude is key to effective troubleshooting and I’m here to help you get your 4070 back on track.

It seems you forgot to include the detailed configuration of your PC including the BIOS version and the operating system version. Could you please also add the exact details of which peripheral devices you have and where they are connected?

Sure! And thanks for the help!

My BIOS is version F20, from 2023. OS is Windows 24H2 (26100.3323)
Connected directly to the PC:

  • Velocity One Flightstick
  • NexiGo WebCam
  • Two monitors: Asus 27’’ (displayPort, main) and HP 23’’ (HDMI, secondary, vertical)
  • Logitech G502 through USB and MX Keys through Bluetooth
  • Crucial 4Tb SSD Hard Disk
  • Mars Gaming Speakers through ordinary sound port
  • A small fingerprint reader
  • A multiport USB hub with
    - Stream Deck XL
    - Stream Deck Plus
    - Honeycomb Bravo
    - Thrustmaster Pedals

I think that’s all

Thank you for providing the BIOS and OS information.
Could you also share the version and model of your motherboard? Additionally, please let me know the version of your Nvidia driver. Do you have NvidiA HD Audio and NVIDIA App installed as well?

Version of motherboard is 11. Yes, I have the NVidia App installed and the version of the GameReady driver is 572.70, published last Wednesday, but I don’t use Nvidia HD audio.

Did I say the problem was over? I was wrong. I was just wandering on the newly opened Marketplace and suddenly BANG the screens are black, the fans go at top speed and there you go. So, installing in an external USB was not the cause of the problem. Anyway I won’t move it back to E: now and my Community folder must remain in the External drive because eventually it will grow much larger.

I’ve played other games with this config: Civ VII, Baldur’s Gate 3. I also use Visual Studio sometimes in this PC though is not my primary working machine. I’ve also manipulated videos with Clipchamp. None produce this effect.

Please provide the exact model and manufacturer of your motherboard. Additionally, I need detailed information about your power supply (PSU).

Please disconnect any external hard drives from your PC. Also, make sure that MSFS 2024, along with the Community folder, is located on your C: drive during the testing and troubleshooting process.
edit
Uninstall Nvidia app and restart PC.

Done. And sorry, yes, I do have NVidia HD Audio

Also I have OMEN Gaming Hub, but it not very useful for me and I could get rid of it.

Edit: Sorry, I have no idea about the power supply, it was included in the PC…
The manufacturer of the motherboard is HP, the model is 8A96 and version of BIOS is AMI F.20 9/14/2023

Please provide the names of all programs that start with your Windows. You can check this in Task Manager under the “Startup” tab.

Not much. In spanish. “Habilitado” means enabled.

I’ll send you a private message in a moment and help you there.
