It’s very possible. I mean they could have changed something that made a very popular mod now incompatible. I just think that dismissing the idea that Asobo changed something is quite naive.
possible is all… but situation is just same as the updates before : in case of installed mods, try first without installed mods and check whether ctd goes away. And I assume this will be same for a long time…
I think I finally found what was my problems. Two days of intensive flying with no CDT anymore.
I ran SFC /SCANNOW and I had a little error who has been repaired
No more CTD since.
Also, I found a great improvement activating “above 4g decoding” in MB bios. Not in terms of framerate but smoothness.
yes, more RAM ( >4gig) can be used for cpu to videocard communication … therefore its also precondition for the new resize bar stuff. In rare cases these setting caused issues, but it normaly good to enable for the current/modern gpus with lots of ram.
Sigh. 2 more CTDs during approach since yesterday. Effectively 1 out of 3-4 flights over 1+ hours will CTD 3-10 miles from the destination airport immediately before or during final. I’ve tested a few theories (from liveries to Little Navmap to offline traffic to AIG traffic) but none of them seems to be the culprit as now all these are disabled or inactive during the flight or deleted.
Right now I suspect it’s either multiplayer or Live traffic or FSRealistic (probably one of the two former), because I’m not running anything else which could be suspect for such behaviour. I think I’ll keep all sorts of traffic disabled for the next 5-10 flights and see what happens.
Happens with all airports, modded or not, rolling cache is disabled, not using any new and untested mods. IIRC it began some time after SU7.
I really can’t wait for XP12 to be released…
My GPU is underclocked and Riva Tuner has never caused an issue with any other games / software I have installed.
If you read through the forum messages since August 2020 (The start of this thread), you will find an abundance of CTD’s without a known error.
You will also find the repeated, “I completely re-installed Windows 10, Flight Sim 2020 vanilla with no addon’s and no overclocking and game still crashes”
So my question to your Den is “Should we say Flight Sim 2020 is still in a BETA phase until they can sort out the bugs and issues that still plague it?”
So I’ve found my way to this basic troubleshooting guide by Flight Sim 2020.
Check out the conflicts caused by Audio drivers and other applications.
Disable Nahimic Service and uninstall Realtek audio drivers
Disable programs such as backup software, tune-up utilities, resources management, photo/video editing software. Examples:
Seagate Toolkit
Nahimic service
Asus Sonic Studio 2
Windows Audio Service
Garmin Express
WD Backup
Logitech G Hub
MSI Afterburner / Riva Tuner Statistics Server
EVGA Precision
OBS
Xsplit
Discord
MacType
Warsaw Banking App
Wallpaper Engine
A-Volute Sound studio
Capture One
MSI afterburner
Process Lasso
FRAPS
Citrix
To add to this, people have mentioned some Windows 10 updates have caused the sim to crash.
So it seems we the consumer, have to uninstall our software to work with a still in development phase product.
Like a lot of software builds today, it is released unfinished and the consumer becomes the Quality Assurance team that provides feedback to the Devs. This is done to save on costs which can be significant with complex software builds and millions of lines of code.
Like you, I’m looking forward to X-Plane 12. X-Plane 11 with Orbx scenery (ground textures) still looks better than MSFS 2020 at lower levels and with a more realistic flight model, it might be time to uninstall MSFS2020.

Even though MSFS is the most amazing game I’ve played in decades, as a software developer myself, I would be embarrassed if I worked on MSFS due to the multitude and severity of the problems it has even a year after release.
For CTDs issues…
Wallpaper engine and Discord?
Have both and neither are causing issue with sim. Neither of those are programs such as backup software, tune-up utilities, resources management, photo/video editing software.
Anytime I install software the first thing I do…
Be sure it is not set to start when Windows starts. Also disable any auto update feature/s.
Yeah and another CTD after 5 hours into flight. Great. Hope they finally will approach that issue after one and a half year.
I doubt they have admitted there’s an issue, even after 6345 comments (and counting):
- Firstly because most people seem to be flying without CTDs (or so they say), so crashes must be affecting a very small minority (nevermind that it remains one of the most voted, if not the most voted unresolved bug)
- Secondly because MSFS is prone to CTD’ing for a trillion different reasons (but somehow it’s almost always the user’s fault…)
- Thirdly because even when they usually address crashes in their SU changelogs, they still don’t explain what exactly has changed. For example we’ll never know if they improved generic code stability and set the foundations to make it more robust against evil mods or if they just fixed an issue where a CTD at a very specific default airport can be replicated under a very specific scenario e.g. ILS rwy 21 AND landing with no flaps during wintertime (which would benefit 0.1% of those that suffer from CTDs). Both would count as “CTD fixes” in the changelog, but have different repercussions in the long run.
We’ve still a long way to go unfortunately before this thing gets some stability and doesn’t crash because of… anything at all. At this point I’m still enjoying MSFS as it doesn’t crash most of the time, but I’ve stopped investing in it and simply wait for XP12.
minus 562 of my posts , because I get no CTDs ( more exact : since very long time no longer a ctd ).
And may minus all users which just not un-voted…
Micha, do you fly VR?
no VR… we mention that we need to differentiate 2D and VR and so we have the VR category ( or tag ). Because in special in start-phase of VR we get some reports and discussed about possible solutions, but then it comes on top that user meant VR. This is of course different situation ( tools, drivers, etc ), where different things can happen as playing in 2D… ( Zeppos know that )…
We also had (older) cases where the VR software interfere and since users installed VR software, they are no longer able to play MSFS 2D without issue. But it’s while ago and I not up2date with VR category.
Thats what i thought Micha.
When i started with msfs 2020 i had no headset and it ran 100% stable, then christmas 2020 my reverb g2 arrived and the crashes started.
It’s just that this “game” is so superb when running stable in VR that you won’t go back to monitor mode, the immersion is so great - but it’s also very glitchy and unstable, one day perfect, the other day it’s like your computer is damaged
I’am a bit envious , but I assume my eyes can not handle VR … I remember about some G2 topics, may be we spoke together too
Because I not own a VR glass, I can only guess about and I would not wonder if a part of the VR software cause issues ( software side or also overstressing hardware ). But I can also not exclude that MSFS itself have issues in VR mode. At least I realy remember these cases: “new VR glasses, issues started”.
Related to 2D it may also depend on players profile. I have not many mods installed, at the moment I use also no additional external tools, and my last flight time >4h is long ago: normal flight profile is currently in small airplanes ( e.g. M20 , Junkers ) or Helicopers and then mostly ~2hours … ( I just need time for DCS too ). So, may be I use the application more Vanilla-Like than other users.
May be also to mentioned: I still use TextToSpeach in Offline Mode, who knows
A little guess about different “day performance” is may be network-relevant stuff ( may the own connection speed, or msfs servers, or or ). But this is then more a topic for performance and not crash ( if not a ctd is the result of network hicks ).
Locking my FPS in NVIDIA control panel to 35 fps seems to have done the trick. No crashes for the last hour but discouraged that it takes limiting the GPU (2080 TI, not overclocked). This is definitely an Asobo code issue as no other game requires me to “lock” the fps in order to avoid crashes.
If you haven’t seen this vid, you should watch it.
It gives some good explanations of needed FPS in the sim.
KB5010415 for Windows 10 20H2-21H2/Server 20H2
-
Addresses a memory leak in the wmipicmp.dll module that causes a lot of false alarms in the System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) datacenter monitoring system.
-
Addresses an issue that causes the Group Policy Management Console to stop working after you close it. The system logs Application Error Event ID 1000 and the error, 0xc0000005 (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION); the failing module is GPOAdmin.dll.
