Crash to desktop, without ever fully loading

I own the game on both, Xbox Series X and my fairly formidable PC. Since building my new PC, I chose not to play on Xbox anymore. It was a ‘crutch’ to enable me to keep gaming until I built this new PC. The game used to work beautifully on this PC. Then, months ago out of the blue, it just decided to stop loading the game. I get the inital ‘sync/update/etc…’ screens, then fullscreen black with the small rotating circle in lower right corner of screen, the POOF, back to desktop. I have tried EVERYTHING recommended by all the zendesk stuff and many, many other ‘helpful’ videos and web sites. I am at a loss. My next step is to re-install windows. Here is a ‘brief’ list of things I’ve tried. There have been many other things I tried as well, each time after spending several hours resetting the MS store, the xbox app, etc, etc I end up giving up. Well today I decided to go over EVERYTHING one more time, still with no luck. Before I re-install windows, this is my last-ditch effort to get help from someone who may have been in my shoes and might possibly have the magic answer.

I don’t have “Sonic Studio 3” installed

Re-install MSFS - Did but strangely it didn’t seem to take as long as I thought it should for a 157gb game. It was ready to “PLAY” fairly quickly as indicated by the MS store.

  1. Logout from Xbox app and Microsoft Store app
  2. Look for the Xbox app and Microsoft Store app in the Windows menu, right-click, click app settings and then click terminate, restore and reset. Do this with the game too.
  3. Clear the store cache type ‘‘wsreset’’ in the Windows bar, run as admin, and wait for the screen to close and open the store automatically.
  4. Open the Microsoft Store app, click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner>downloads updates>get updates and update everything.
  5. Press the Windows Button then type Services.
Right-click over the Services App from the list of results.
    Then select Run as Administrator
Scroll to the bottom and find the following services:
    IP Helper
    Xbox Live Auth Manager,
    Xbox Live Game Save,
    Xbox Live Networking Service,
    Gaming Services.
Do this with each of the services listed above.
Right-click over the service and select Properties.
Find the Startup type section and make sure it’s set to Automatic.
If the service isn’t started, click Start to start the services.

Click Apply and OK to save changes.

  1. Restarted PC

Tried…
Disabling all my sound devices
Deleting (un-pairing) any Bluetooth devices
Un-plugging all my USB devices
Stopping ALL other apps before starting MSFS
Updating my Nvidia graphics drivers, played around with different versions just in case
Starting MSFS through the Xbox app
Starting MSFS as Administrator
Logging out from my MS account, both in “Microsoft Store” and the “Xbox app”
I don’t run antivirus software
Disabling Windows Firewall

Deleted cloud saves with:
start shell:appsFolder\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App -DeleteCloudSaves

don’t have any aftermarket ‘package’ folders

Verified language pack
Verified date/time/region

Uninstalled/reinstalled gaming services via powershell.
Unplugged all but mouse and keyboard

No other choice I guess but to re-install.

Any help would be appreciated.

Three things not on your list (I think):

  1. delete Content.xml (in root installation folder)
  2. delete UserCfg.opt (same place)
  3. delete SceneryIndex folder contents (not the folder but the hundreds of files inside)

Probably won’t help if you already did clean install.

Something deeply messed up. Reinstall Windows may be the only way out! :frowning:

I will say you’re very persistent with all of the things you have tried! Perhaps an astrologer or fortune teller would help guide you forward to a resolution as I think the fix may be other worldly :genie: .

Are you running MSI Afterburner or Riva Tuner Stats Server? The most recent versions of these cause my FS install to CTD before reaching the main menu screen. Stupidly didn’t back up the old versions or set a restore point so until I take the time and trouble to chase down the previous versions, I’m just running without. Fortunately, the benefit I was getting from them was small so I’m still flying fine.

Thank you for responding.
No, I wasn’t running either of them. I ended up performing a windows re-install. Now it all works great. Just strange that I tried everything on all the ‘lists’ with no luck. I guess I will never know the true root cause.
Thanks again for your response. Now, I back to those flying lessons!

Cheers!

LOL, if nothing else, I’m at least persistent. I ‘troubleshoot’ things for a living so for me to get to the point of re-installing was not something I took lightly. The re-install, no big deal. Not knowing what originally caused it? That’s what bugs me.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers
