In the description of the TBM mod, it says that is sets the “cuising altitude” of the TBM to FL310. According to google, the cruise altitude of that plane is FL280, and only the service ceiling is FL310.
Does the “cruising altitude” in that mod description mean something else than the cruising altitude as given for the airplane? If not, I think it would make sense to set the cruising altitude to FL280, as this seems to be what Daher recommends the plane to be flown at.
I can’t comment on the mod, but the best cruise altitude is variable and depends on a lot of things, such as Standard Atmosphere (ISA) for example. If you look at the TBM930 Pilot’s Information Manual sect 5.11, you see in the graph and subsequent tables that FL310 is acceptable at ISA -20, but FL280 is the logical max at ISA, before fuel flow and speed take a hit. At ISA + 20 you would need to cruise at a lot lower altitude.
Wow that is interesting, thanks. It’s surprising that the range is so large, from FL230 to FL310.
Actually one thing I just remembered: Daher added some emergency mode to the TB 940 in case the pilot passes out due to lack of oxygen at great heights. Maybe that is also a reason to keep flying at a lower FL than 310 for normal operation?
