CTD when internet connection lost

A misunderstanding of the actual issue has resulted in this topic being moved from bug reports to user support hub (see “solution”). Due to this, any replies about how the bug is affecting you as well are pointless, as this is not being investigated as an actual bug.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
CTD caused by loss of internet connectivity.
Would be nice if the game could maybe pause and wait for connection to be restored instead of rendering the last several hours of flying useless due to a temporary internet outage.

There’s a post for this from years ago for 2020 that was ignored, so I am making this one for 2024.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Once.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Play
  2. Have internet outage
  3. Crash

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

No

[PC Only] Many issues may be due to an outdated graphics card. Please state your Graphics Card Driver Manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) and Version:

Nvidia 566.36

Ironically, I went through exactly this two hours ago

My parents were putting up the Christmas tree and accidentally turned off the router. The simulator immediately closed.

Yes. Internet Connection lost in Worldmap every 10sec. and after few attempts Game CTD.

Sometimes able to fly 3h with A330 (Freeze/Crash after Return to Menü)

And then Sometimes again CTD with Internet Connection lost.

1Gbit with LAN Cat8 Cable. No Issues somewhere else.

• There’s more. It can’t handle putting the PC in the Sleep or Hibernation. OK, very few times it doesn’t crass and allows to continue when internet connection is restored, but this is the exception proving the point. Mostly it either CTDs or hangs irresponsive with only solution to kill the process from Task Manager.

Topic moved from Bug Reports, as the simulator will stop if the data stream from the servers is lost.
There is no way for the sim to work if it doesn’t connect to the servers.
There are Wishlist requests asking for more of the sim to be loaded on a device.
You may want to participate in those.

• Yes, this is a bug and should not be removed from the Bug Reports.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• There was an internet outage of ony a few minutes. While the sim went into “Paused for 5 minutes, trying to reconnect”, it crashed to the desktop 1) despite stating that it would return to Main Menu, 2) despite the internet connection returning within the 5 minutes. Lost another hour of flight time to this bug!
In general in a sim where you loose hours of gameplay, the sim should not throw all this into the garbage after 5 minutes without internet. Just implement some exponential retrying strategy and let the user choose whether they want to wait longer or abort!

I find this outrageous. We lost a camera on the house and I restarted the router. Crashed in less than 4 min. I was in the middle of a multi-hr flight.

• When flying A330 (or any streamed plane) the sim will crash after regaining internet connection. After trying to reproduce this manually about 3-4 times, I can say that this does not happen with planes that are in the community folder e.g. the Fenix A32F.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

I observed the same problem.

It crashed a few seconds after I reconnected to the network.

I have done some testing just now and have tried the following scenario with the A330:

  • On Ground, Aircraft cold and dark: No crash
  • On Ground, Aircraft powered up: No Crash
  • Below 10,000 Ft: No Crash
  • FL240: No Crash
  • FL340: Crash

Again, the sim did not CTD when using the Fenix A320.

Could this be an issue related to how the sim loads in textures etc. at higher altitudes?

I had a crash yesterday in the Inibuilds A330-300RR going from EKCH to VTBS at FL410. But I had the same crash in the Airbus H125 and pretty much any plane.

I love in a rural area with 30mbs max internet that frequently cuts out, when this happens the simulator obviously has a data loss and then reconnects when possible. However sometimes when reconnecting the simulator freezes. On task-manager the simulator reads a 0% CPU usage but briefly starts working again before a CTD.

My guess is that this happens when a bunch of data comes in and chase the game to just die, today I’ve deleted my Streamed Packages, and Rolling cache, along with the Scenery Indexes to see if that prevents it.

This is a really annoying bug because msfs2024 would work for me if I didn’t have to worry about it crashing when my internet cuts out for a few seconds. I’m told the game is designed to freeze or pause when it does which is fine. But I’ve not seen that yet.

Hopefully upgrading internet helps but I don’t have the money right now, and I shouldn’t have to do that to enjoy the game. Another reason why you don’t have pre alpha releases. All the Inibuilds planes are glitched, we need a big update soon.

• Flying Fenix A320 - internet dropped out for 2 minutes and simulator paused - once internet connection was back, CTD

Thankfully, the developers have understood that this was an actual issue and have included a fix in SU2.
