Curved Monitor With MSFS?

Don’t you think it’s a bit of unfair towards the local retailer if you have a look in his/her shop, ask for advice but buy it online elsewhere?

I’ll buy wherever I get the best deal and if the retailer wants to match it - and if asked many will - I’ll buy from them. Unfortunately it’s no longer a fair world out there.

It isn’t a fair world, but it is that way at least in part because of that attitude.
That retailer has already provided you with a service. So to ask him to just match some online retailer is simply disrespectful.

And people wonder why bricks and mortar stores cannot compete with online-only retailers and disappear from the High Street/Main Street…

When I needed a new oven, and hob, I told them I could get it for such, and such a price online, and I said if they could match that I’ll buy from them instead, and they said yes. They wouldn’t fit it all for me, but I got a third party to do that anyway.

I have seen advertising where they will do just that as well, though admittedly that’s pretty rare.

Years ago, when I was a younger man I flew radio control models. I often had a choice to mail order or at my local hobby shop and I always went to the local guy regardless of price. After all, that’s where I could go for advice, the latest information on building technique and for a good bs session with others with the same interests. In other words, my hobby world would have been less fun if he went out of business. Now I live in a small town and although I’m no longer into rc airplanes I try, as much as I can, to buy locally to keep my small town active. Can’t always get stuff local, but I try. My 2 cents worth.

This is the right path. I’ve never understood why anyone would want to fly like they’re looking through one of these:

So I am looking at getting a new PC with 5090 and LG 45" 5k2k curved. My biggest concern is will it look really weird with the cockpit controls not being flat? Just do not think I would like them wrapped around me, but I have no idea and if most say it is fine, or typically cockpit is only towards center of the screen, etc. it would help a lot. Does anyone have any feedback with running MSFS with large curved monitor.

The 5K2K will be 21:9 aspect ratio, not 32:9. So the distortion won’t be bad at all.

I have a 32 inch 4K, a 34 inch 21:9, and a 49 inch 32:9. By far I prefer flying on the 21:9 monitor, so yes, I am looking forward to the 5K2K because that will give enough vertical height to make it feel an even better experience.

I have been using a 32" 4k monitor running at 4l for years, but never even been on a curved monitor. I need it for work as well and guessing that for work that the curved might be preferred so people can see the outer edges better? I use fancyzones(MS powertoys)and have multiple wframes I can throw windows into, and thinking the curve might be preferred there, but if most people do not like curved for working let me know. I take people’s opinion on this stuff because I am typically the same.

With flight simulator on a 21:9 monitor what is at the side of the monitor? does you still see curved cockpit? or is it the doors, etc? Trying to figure out if it will feel like flying a curved cockpit like in a rocket, or if the cockpit should be mostly in the middle and not curved as much, etc.

I might have to go with the ::G 45-990 they just showed at CES that bends or straightens out just to figure out what is better for different conditions, but the 45-950 is going to be cheaper(still expensive) and still has speakers built in, etc.(I use 2 computers and jump back and forth on KVM in monitor as I like a clean desk, etc.)

It’s just a slightly wider field of view, like this:

16:9

21:9

An even wider monitor (eg 32:9) will further “stretch” the edges as you get farther from the center of the picture, leading to diminishing returns in terms of how much extra scenery you get.

Thanks - That helps a ton

I’ve been using a 21:9 UHD curved monitor for about a year and a half or so. I would highly recommend it for flight simming, once you start using it it’s hard to go back to 16:9. It just feels more natural being able to see more of the instrument panel without needing to pan as much, also with being able to see more in your “periphery” so to speak on takeoff, landing, or high intensity flying. The actual curve is not noticeable at all when you’re playing a game, feels like a normal screen.

Thanks for the feedback. Like I mentioned, I have been on 32" 4k and just never used a curved monitor so I appreciate it. I was watching youtube reviews last night and finally got someone who talked about some curved monitors having too much of a curve(800-900), etc. Because of that, I think I am going to get the LG45GX990 that allows you to change the curve to what looks best for different use. With the cockpit being in the center it might not matter as much, but I am just thinking to go ahead and spend the extra money on a 5090 and get that one as well. It will probably be several months before I can get both, but I just like to plan ahead. Thanks for all the feedback and if anyone else has opinions on flight simulator with curved monitors, please post

I use a 57" 1000R 32:9 curved monitor for FS2024 but also my daily work and really like it. The immersion is much better than on my previous 16:9 32" monitor. It is also much easier to work with multiple apps in use. Going back to a 16:9 monitor feels like looking into a narrow tunnel now.

In my case, the distortion is the same with a 32" monitor as with the 49" Oddysey, only that having more inches makes it more noticeable. While waiting for a solution to the problem, I will not change the curved one for any other, the immersion is brutal.

This is my setup. A 49" Samsung G9 curved monitor for the main display and a 34" curved LG Monitor for displaying Navigraph and STKP side by side inlaid with the STKP inlay full page display. It’s with a Ryzen 9 7900 x and an RX 7900 XT gpu and I think it works amazingly with my cockpit.

One thing I do experience is that the right side of the flightdeck for tubeliners on the sim is a bit elongated, but keeping main focus on the left side, it doesn’t really make that much of a difference to me. But for GA flying, I can’t see me flying on anything but a curved screen.

I hope this maybe helps with your decision.

Sick setup!!

Thanks Guys - Both of those setups look perfect. So I am planning out my upgrade this year and these new LG 45 5k2k oleds that just got accounced 2 weeks ago look insane. I currently have a 32" 4k IPS at only 60HZ and without HDR, and think these new ones will be a great upgrade, but trying to figure out which one. There is one coming on April 1st, but it has a 800R curve, which looks a lot more curved than what you guys have. I just think 800R is probably too much for flight simulator? If you guys know the radius of your curvitures please post so I can get a better idea(The higher the number = less curve)

800R will be just fine. If your worried go for the bendable model a set it where you want it.
