CYGK Kingston Ontario Simaddons vs CanadianFlightSimStudios comparison

I saw that CanadianFlightSimStudios released a CYGK on Marketplace, and I had been using Simaddons CYGK for a couple of years. I haven’t see any reviews, videos, nothing about either of these airports before other than a few screenshots from the developers, so since I have them both and I fly there quite a bit I decided to make a speed walkthrough in 4K Ultra of each airport to help people make up their minds.

I think both are very good and well worth buying. I’ll point out a few somewhat objective things about each airport if you can’t decide:

Simaddons CYGK:

  • A bit more expensive
  • Has interiors for main terminal and control tower
  • Comes with some 1000 Islands landmarks and large boat behind the airport
  • Has lots of 3D people, several animated, walking around the airport and making it feel busy (even at 3 am)
  • Night lighing has well-lit interiors
  • Mostly default very dark green aerial imagery
  • Added marine birds and sounds

CFSS CYGK:

  • A bit cheaper
  • Has bespoke ground texture that looks very clean and aprons are very well integrated with the aerial image (also shorter grass throughout)
  • Building models are more like the real ones (in terms of windows/doors, shape and signs), it seems to have more bespoke buildings around the site and more ground details done throughout the area
  • No interiors, no parallax windows, so night lighting with emissive textures is more basic than a lit interior would be
  • No people whatsoever (besides MSFS tarmac workers)
  • A few visual glitches in 1.0 (more on that later)

To me both are really great and I don’t regret buying either one. If you plan to fly commercial flights Simaddons has more activity, even has a VDGS (which isn’t there in real life, but is removable). However… the real Norman Rogers airport currently is pretty dead when it comes to commercial flights, so having it empty is actually realistic. In the CFSS version there are quite a few nice GA static aircraft so if that’s what you use it for, it’s perfectly fine.

If you plan to fly around the 1000 Islands Simaddons has a few notable landmarks. It also comes with the Collins Bay Marina on approach, cleans up that area and adds 3D boats and docks. Since I wanted to play with CFSS now and didn’t want to wait for a fix, I posted a small add-on that fixes the current issues and adds a 3D Collins Bay Marina using Mamudesign Marinas assets, feel free to use that if you get CFSS CYGK on PC.

Thanks to both developers for making a Kingston scenery, and I hope this convinces a few people to get either one or both.

Simaddons has always been on the more expensive side (for the quality) but they do fill a niche area when it comes to Canadian airports that other developers haven’t touched.

Overtime and in recent releases the quality has continued to get better.

We are seeing some duplicates now.

With respect the VDGS they have that everywhere, (and everywhere they shouldn’t).

This can be removed though by installing another version of the modelib which is available on their forums.

Thanks, I forgot to mention that VDGS is removable (edited in)
