why would you wanna do that lol?
To train for a real DA40 without the FADEC unit and the good old levers ![]()
Just wanted to say thanks for the mod.
MrTommy, have you heard anything more about the weather vane effect and how difficult it makes crosswind takeoff and landing? I tried to takeoff yesterday with a strong crosswind of maybe 25kts at 50 degrees off the nose. Full rudder deflection, plus toe brake, and I still went of the side of the runway.
The DA40 AFM states that I could have had a 33 kts wind at 50 degs off the nose, and that would have been the max crosswind component (which is 25 kts).
- No flight sim I have tried/owned both in commercial or personal variant has been able to faithfully reproduce the full spectrum of grip/friction and control effectiveness in that part of a flight. Most tend to “feel” a bit like skating on snow or ice.
- Have you done a real world take off in that sort of condition ?? I have. In aircraft that were much heavier than a DA40 and it still was challenging. A lot of the outcome depends on how you set it up and how you can get the aircraft up to speed where control effectiveness is fully present.
No, it’s been 30 yrs since I flew a real plane (omg…). Yeah, I’m probably outside the crosswind envelope for a flight sim like MSFS. But I do find it very odd that both the DA40 and DA62 will start weather vaning as soon as you release the brakes and the aircraft isn’t even moving. That says to me that the tire/ground friction modeling is a bit off, and that would contribute to difficulty in a crosswind I’m guessing.
I can tell you that even our Saratoga weather-vaned given a chance and high enough winds ![]()

I flew her back from an avionics upgrade a day before her annual expired, in the middle of Santa Ana wind season. In hindsight stupid…but thankfully no harm done.
Landing at Rialto with 36-42 kt winds was no problem thanks to a runway pointed right into the winds coming out of the high desert.
But then there was the taxi to the hangar part😏
With about 10 stops and some rather wild excursions I got her back close to her hanger. But she would not have stayed there long enough to get her safely inside.
My partner in the airplane tied her down on one of the spots with chains while I was holding her with a bit of power and brakes😃
I did mention that was a stupid idea right.
The friction value is at fault for sure in FS but it is a difficult one. Because for some reason none of the flight sims seem to fully reproduce the difference between rolling resistance and stationary friction between tire and ground.
I’ve been really enjoying this mod, thank you!
Just a quick question about the throttle, I am finding that when i’m slowing to approach speed and to idle it seems to sometimes start accelerating again, or at least sounds like it is. I’m using a TCA airbus quadrant and have tried changing settings on the quadrant and in sim. It doesn’t seem to behave this way in other planes - i’m kinda stumped.
Has anyone else found this and is there a way around it?
The DA40NG has a FADEC controlled engine that is designed to increase engine RPM when the power lever is reduced to idle. Think of it like a complex airplane with a prop lever. Normal procedure would be to push the prop lever to maximum RPM before landing.
The DA40NG does this automatically when power is reduced to idle. In this case, the reason is that increasing the engine RPM results in more prop drag and helps to slow the plane down faster at idle power.
That’s super helpful, thank you!
This is a great mod - absolutely love it! I have been trying to link a press button on my home panel to the ECU test using the FADEC_ECUTEST LVAR but can’t figure out what command should be linked to it to run the test. I’ve tried FADEC_ECUTEST_SET #1, FADEC_ECUTEST_ON , FADEC_ECUTEST_BUTTONISDOWN , etc. etc. but can’t seem to get it to work. Any thoughts on what might work? Many thanks!
Any information about proceeding with this great mod? Or is it “done”? Just asking for a friend … ![]()
it still works doesnt it?
Yes, it works great and I really love it. The DA40 NG with your mod and FS realistic is one of my favorite aircraft in MSFS. ![]()
My question was not about whether it works but about whether the mod will be developed further or whether it is “finished”. ![]()
unfortunately im too busy with the DA42 to update my other mods at this time.
Is that a DA42 for MSFS??
Please participate there and let keep this thread for the DA-40 mod. Thanks.
This is unacceptable!!! ![]()
I’m curious if you have ever considered making your DA40 and DA62 mods appear as their own aircraft in MSFS rather than as a mod of the existing plane?
I’m asking for very self-serving reasons as I would like to add both to NeoFly4 as available aircraft, but I believe they would need to be separate from the existing plane in order to be added into NF4’s database. (I don’t think they can share the same sim name and be differentiated from each other in NF4).
