Daily check of the Microsoft Store for Updates

I’ve noticed recently a number of problems reported on this forum that were resolved by updating various apps in the Microsoft Store. In particular, installing any updates to:

  • Gaming Services
  • Xbox
  • Game Bar

seemed to help.

Despite having App updates set to automatically download & install in within the MS Store Settings page:

It appears that one has to manually open the store, go to the library page and click on the “Get Updates” page to see if any need installing - at least, that is what I’m having to do on my Windows 11 PC.

So, I’ve got into the habit of checking every day for updates after starting my PC. Rather a hassle, but so far I’ve never had any of the authentication & connection issues that others have reported (though this may just be a coincidence).

For example, sure enough, I checked today (May 10th) & there was an update to Gaming Services, perhaps related to trying to fix the issues reported here.

If anyone knows how to get the store to actually automatically update - without having the store app constatly open & minimized in the task bar, I’d love to know! :slightly_smiling_face:

It does update automatically if you have “App updates” turned on. It’s not all the time it checks for updates. But you do not need to have the app open as the process runs in the background when the app isn’t open. :+1:

Well, App updates are turned on. I’m wondering if it is because “Metered Connection” is set to “ON” under Windows | Settings | Network & Internet | Wi-Fi | Connection. It does say “Some Apps might work differently to reduce data usage when you are connected to this network”.

I forgot that I had set that when I was using my previous ISP last year. So many settings to remember…

I 'd turn it on, but then I’m afraid Windows Update will install a bunch of updates - such as to my graphics driver - that I don’t want, as they are older than my current drivers (so why they are showing up at all is not clear to me).

Ah, that’s probably it!

I check manually every couple of days for Marketplace updates as I don’t want to be in the middle of something and an update starts. I’ve seen multiple updates a week for one or more of those 3 programs so probably lots of fixes being done. Great recommendation to check and do updates.

I also have this hygiene of launching the Microsoft Store more or less at every first boot. I’m more the kind of user who doesn’t things to get update without I’m being warned.

But I’m concerned about these updates so so so often on my Windows 11 and my Windows 10 system. What happened on Microsoft side? Why these core apps are so often updated and blocking the Microsoft Store and MSFS ?

Again, this morning (CET)

I have been checking both Windows (11) and MS Store daily daily almost since day one when it became clear that the update condition impacted on the sim. I have a dedicated Sim PC, which I turn on, select to update and walk away. Return after checking emails etc on my laptop - all done and I can see what has been updated and that the update was successfully installed. I have all automatic update functions turned off.

That’s odd. This morning (May 11) I only had an update for the Feedback Hub. The two Xbox apps you show in your screenshot have not been updated on my PC (Windows 11 v22631.3447) since 11/23/2023!

As to why so often? I have no idea. I wish that MS provided a changelog for each update, and I provided feedback to that effect years ago, but I doubt that we’ll ever see one.

The screenshot from this morning is from my dev PC on Windows… 10. Here’s (at least) one difference. My other PC, which is a Windows 11, has the same annoying very perioding update of these kind of core app for MSFS (Xbox, Gaming Services, Xbox Identity Provider, Xbox Live in-game experience) but with a different timeframe.

Here’s the screenshot on Windows 11 of today (05.12 CET) with Microsoft Gaming Services app update (as well as Xbox)

(The Microsoft Flight Simulator update is related to the Beta)

Note: I’m on a PC with the MS Store version. Versions may be different for Steam (though I think this unlikely) and Xbox consoles may be entirely different.

Since the outage ( crowdstrike) a few days ago I have a strange issue that has shown its face. I too also check the Microsoft store/Windows update after I boot for the first time. Its hygiene/habit for me also. I also make sure all drivers are current in NCP. Now, when I check the next day, the dates have rollbacked again to June. A second PC restart corrects them everytime. but the scenerio repeats itself randomly. If I don’t restart PC and get current dates applied to the microsoft store library the sim will be a studder fest. Restarting PC updates store to current dates and makes all work great and smooth with the sim. Now at boot I’m having to restart twice to get dates current so sim performs well.

Hi @TogetherSpark69,
Yes - I see something similar - the dates shown after an update often get “scrambled” - for want of a better word. The dates are correct the next time I start the PC. I’ve not correlated stutters in MSFS with incorrect dates in the Store - that is an interesting observation.

Well at least I’m not alone here lol …I click or change very very little, if any, from default settings anywhere. When MSFS acts up anytime lately for me, I just close and come back at another time. Maybe an hr or day…depends. I never change any settings that don’t change themselves, ie…updates. Somehow lately this has worked and kept me flying.I would almost bet all, that everytime I have had issues as of late, its been some type of server connection or something being controlled from other sources.Today I looked at NVCP and seen “optimized” checked.I removed the ck. I didn’t ck it to start with that I remember, and my performance, especially the Latency, seems much lower now somehow, did a 30 min hopper flight, closed MSFS. I then went back to the store and signed out /in twice, never had to do that for them to get all dates current, it’s normally once. I then restarted PC, and all is staying updated so far. I’ll keep you posted if it holds…smooth as greased Butter atm…PHNL grd level. 7800 3D 4070super 32gb windows 11 3840 x 2160 60hz

Same today after boot. I have no solution atm. What I did find was the studderfest was Hdr somehow.I turned it off in windows and in the sim and it has remained smooth as silk since.

Hi all, Today I’ve noticed that every time I go into the Microsoft store to check for updates, I’m finding that (1) 2024 MSFS item needs downloading every time I sign in. I click on it,and it installs in just a blink to C. It then shows current. Next day it appears again as needing to download again. What am I missing? I’m having a great experience atm with the sim, and really hate to mess with too much for fear of creating a problem  Anyone else seeing this? I just tried it again and it comes back as needing to download again.

I checked my MS Store.

So I clicked it.

It displayed and this screen and I changed it to my K\FS2024 drive.
And now, it does nothing.

Just keeps repeating this screen.

I’m wondering if this could effect the performance/startup of the 2024 sim for some? I’ve noticed nothing on my setup. Why would there be 2? I’m gonna leave it for the time being. Thanks for the reply RonS
