DC Designs F-14A/B Tomcat Announcement & Discussion

You should be able to see the heading cursor both in MFD (an outer triangle on the circular compass) and a rombhus in the HSI from the HUD and PFD. You also have to verify that you are in heading mode and not in Ground track mode (AWL button lets you switch between HDG and TRK).

I’ve noticed this also, it’s a tiny difference in code value that causes the discrepancy. The PFD will be the correct one. Noted for first update. Good spot :+1:

I am assuming you mean these? I know that. What im trying to say is,that the heading numbers are nowhere to be seen besides the digital compass.
For example,i wann fly with little nav map instead of mfs and i want to put the HD i see on LNM like i do on the A320.Is it not possible Please forgive me if not.
I am only asking if i don’t see it and it’s there

I think I understand what you say. Both the a320 Neo and the 747 have FCU (Flight control Unit) to display the HDG, the selected speed, the altitude or the vertical speed. We have not incorporated that unit here since it does not exist in the F14 but I can see if I can put the HDG or CRS part in the MFD.

Sorry about have not thought about this before, but I thought the cursors were enough.

They are Jack, for now - this is not a priority requirement. But we can add it at a later date.

My friend, nothing to apologize for.I am just a gamer who knows nothing about the real thing.I just asked cause of my ignorance.
I perfectly understand.
At least now i know that there is no such thing.
Much obliged

I was wracking my brain over why the manual wing sweep wasn’t working, then I saw your post and realized I had a switch on my Bravo throttle quadrant mapped to “Toggle Anti-Ice”. Unmapped that and I have manual wing sweep!

Glad was useful information. I thought would help someone in a way like this and wasn’t in manual so pleased it has. Hope you are enjoying the F-14 as much as I am

I’ve been having a right laugh with this. My brother Jamie is an ex RAF Tornado pilot who now works as a 787 captain for Virgin Atlantic. Anyway I’ve just put him the back seat of my F-14, which is of course deliciously humiliating for him.

Hi there, just bought this lovely craft but as a noob in military planes I tried to dig into the manual but it’s lacking in more fool proof way of tutorial puzzles me. and I got a few questions to ask:

  1. I flown full manual today, while it’s a lot of fun, I found the aircraft without AP engaged pitching rather violently and changes itself with steady thrust, like at 600 knots with steady engine power and I trimmed it to fly almost level and it will suddenly have VS in the +/- thousands. is that normal or is that some hidden automation in play?

  2. the flaps extend and retract itself, is it working as intended or there’s something like AI piloting I need to disengage?

  3. Now to the main problem for A/P, firstly I set up in game flight plan, after engaging the AP and ATHR it seems it just flew randomly up and down… I checked the manual and it seems I need to switch to GPS mode? but I can’t find the button. also for V nav or select altitude I tried the right panel but it just ignore my inputs, any guide on how to use it?

It will be better for newbie like me to actually have a video lecture on how to fly it properly especially from cold and dark or else it’s just basically constanttly manually flying for short period and that’s it.

Thanks if anyone can step in and have some beginner guide

Does anyone have a good guide at how to add name to the Jet? I tried doing it both by adding one from temple but also just editing the one in the original file but all I get is the pink bar. Using Gimp to do it and copied name but didn’t seem to overwrite despite matching so I’m lost. Also is there a style guide such as fonts etc? Or plane patches as no idea how to cleanly remove name and add another and any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

The files have to be saved in DDS format to work in MSFS. The manual only gives a general guide as it’s a huge subject itself - even I don’t know how to add liveries to existing products, only the ones I build in the first place, although obviously it can be done as there are many such liveries about.

Best place to start would be FSDeveloper.com and scour the forums for the info on how to create your own liveries.

How do you save as .DDS from Gimp? Is that the default or something have to do a set way? I am pretty sure I had a .DDS file used but must be wrong

  1. I think you’re referring to Mach Tuck, an aerodynamic phenomenon common to supersonic aircraft and quite normal.

  2. You’re seeing the maneuvering flaps operating, again, normal for the Tomcat

  3. NAV/GPS selector switch is on the left hand side panel, about two thirds of the way back and labelled on the panel :+1:

You would need the GIMP DDS plugin, which can be downloaded for free.

Ah okay. Think download so will try again tomorrow, thanks.

Its fairly straightforward but you do need to know the basics of Gimp. Personally I found it easier using photoshop (because I use it a lot and know what I’m doing with it) to actually make the template for the name tags but then you have to save it and then turn it into a DDS file using gimp, bit of a faff but it works. Make sure you get the names positioned correctly in the template otherwise they’ll be too high on the aircraft and won’t be visible. There’s a bit of trial and error there.

Ah okay, I don’t have photoshop so need to learn either way. I think was close with positioning but without knowing font or size I was struggling to match perfectly.
