ISSUE DESCRIPTION
Description of the issue:
Prior to su6 beta if you didn’t manually select a tail number the default of ASXGS was used for both airliners and GA. This is no longer the case with a random number starting with I- being seen. Could be a bug or could be another unasked for feature added by the devs.
FREQUENCY OF ISSUE
How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
Always since 1.8.10.0
REPRODUCTION STEPS
Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:
Select an aircraft without changing any identifier
See I-??? randomly being used

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use?
[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?
MEDIA
Please add a screenshot or video of the issue occurring.
Check the livery. Could be a livery file without a proper ID. The sim is supposed to populate the ident field of the livery has one specified. The fact you needed to manually enter it, was a bug introduced in SU4 that was fixed in SU5 at some point.
Default aircraft. Default liveries. Have never changed the tail number since MSFS 2024 was released (always just left it default). Only started seeing this bug with 1.8.10.0
Edit to add: all my flights since testing 1.8.10.0 have started and ended in UK airports so the random I- prefix it is showing has nothing to do with the country designation.
What is making this bug report difficult is that the bug only occurs randomly. Sometimes the expected default of ASXGS is still used with no apparent change to my work flow.
Start pc
Start MSFS
Go to free flight
Select aircraft (but don’t make any configuration changes)
Plan flight in EFB (but dont make any changes under Flight Details tab)(important: bug still occurs if EFB not used to plan flight)
Start flight
Sometimes see I-??? as tail number (note ? means a random letter)
When flying the CJ the text on the tail remains default but the tail number the ATC uses shows the random designator. When flying the 172 both show the same incorrect tail number.
***Edit: just retested the 172 and this time the incorrect designator only appeared on the ATC window. This is a very random bug.
While quite a ‘trivial’ bug what is concerning me is that obviously some value is now (since 1.8.10.0) being written to randomly. At the moment that has a benign consquence but if left un-corrected this bug could result in an important memory location being randomly changed in future builds.
This is one of the annoying ones… Long time ago I reported the bug of the H125 which gets SP-MDB all the time. Nobody cares, nothing from the devs… Not a feedback logged, just silence . For sure there are bigger bugs, but it’s frustrating nevertheless.
Was not able to replicate (but just did a quick test with the C172). Starting on the runway or C&D at EGNV, call sign was correct. I did not use at all the EFB.
I wonder if this indicates they’re trying to bring back the random registration if you don’t specify one. This was a launch feature and one that I actually really liked, but it was conflicting too much with aircraft that had registrations baked into the livery or had state saving tied to a registration and was removed either in SU1 or possibly one of the very early patches before it. Ideally it would assign a registration appropriate for the region the aircraft was being flown in.
What happened to me yesterday was that the game assigned me a random 3 letters and 4 numbers (ESP 1890, or something similar) ATC call sign, while I never changed my custom one.
Note that it’s not just the C172 that I experienced the issue with. I also saw the same bug with the CJ100.
Note despite seeing this happen over a number of days before I created this report (including several PC reboots) I haven’t been able to replicate it since! I did have one more occurrence almost immediately after the initial bug submission but that was the last time and I’ve used the sim maybe 10+ times since then. Strange. I’ll update this thread if and when I see it happen again.
This is just what I thought when it first occurred (hence my rather unnecessary dig at the devs in my OP - my bad) but was confused by the fact that I was flying UK only and it kept assigning Italian registrations!
Unfortunately the issue returned today so I’ve removed the solved marker.
Exact sequence (pretty much as every time I use the sim) from this morning:
Started PC
Started MSFS 2024
Selected Free Flight
Selected TBM 930
Changed nothing at all in the configuration section of the plane (I didn’t even look at it until afterwards when I took the screenshot)
Opened EFB to setup route
Changed nothing in the Flight Details tab (I didn’t even look at it until afterwards when I took the screenshot)
Sent plan to ATC & Avionics
Started flight
Observed that ATC referred to me as I-AVKX
Observed that the plane still has ASXGS painted on the tail (although once with the C172 I saw this reflect the I-??? registration).
As I’ve said, I’ve never felt the need to change the tail number from the default in either MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 - I’m used to listening to the ATC to hear ASXGS so this is not something I’ve changed in my procedure recently but certainly the last few days is the first time I’ve seen this incorrect attribution of tail number.
