Demoed the Pimax Dream Air today

Had a demo of the Pimax Dream Air with its OLED 4K per eye panels and pancake lenses today. The visual quality is excellent, definitely like looking at a really very good quality hires 2D flat panel screen, but in VR! Black, colors and contrast are spot on, with zero chromatic shift except at the very edges. It completely blows my G2 off the playing field. But other than that, the product I tried isn’t at all close enough to prime time for me. Mainly eye tracking was not implemented, and it was using lighthouse controllers. Also, I noticed judder when you turned your head. I think it was related to the game framerate was not keeping up with the headset’s refresh rate, and that was confirmed by their demo guy. Their foveated rendering wasn’t working yet was the excuse (and for reasons too long to write here, that excuse didn’t cut it for me). Bottom line, I hope the product they ship is a heck of a lot more fully and correctly implemented than what they demoed today. Twice he mentioned “the lab guys say it works”; that didn’t bode well with my confidence level. I would not be surprised if my preordered Dream Air SE ships around 9 months or more from now :frowning: . Thanks goodness for the Oasis driver and my trusty (but sorely lacking) ol’ G2. But those lenses and panels, dang they are sweet!

And the sound compared with the G2?.

The demo unit had a cobbled together headstrap that was nothing like what the final product would have. It seemed to use something similar to dmas speakers so the sound was good, but that aspect of the demo wasn’t really meaningful given the VR content they had. I asked about the audio options and two things were mentioned: the default audio will be comparable in quality to the Q3, and that an optional halo style headstrap will be available in the future that’ll have dmas speakers. Overall, beyond showing off that their lenses and panels are fantastic, everything else about the Dream Air was a complete no-show and somewhat disappointing. I can’t figure out why they were motivated to demo such a half baked product (well, maybe two-thirds baked). I saw the demo in San Jose, CA, which is very close to where I live.

Thanks. Would be a disappointment if for a comparable sound with the G2 they convert the Dream Air in a bulky headset… (like Beyond 2 does…), more than the “old” G2s…, and not include it like in the small form factor with speakers attachable or with only one easy screw…, like the G2s.

Hope Valve make a good-wise PCVR-HMD also in the near future.

Also the upcoming Samsung VR headset looks really promising - with the best displays known for VR headsets.

The SamsungVR problem is that it isn´t a focused PCVR, it hasn´t a USB-C (with the Display Port function) or a traditional Display a Port cable, and I don´t want more devices with Wifi/microwaves attached to the brain if I can avoid it, after old and recent excellent hundreds and hundreds of peers reviewed studies.

The Dream Air (SE better for only PCVR IMO) even is more smart having the possibility of being a portable Android smartphone (VR also) and allegedly a USB-C(DP version) for PCVR, but with the smartphone (with its own USB-C/DP) attached by the USB cable (or not), on the desk/pocket e.g., and less weight and heat in the goggles.

I would not enter in an argument about the harmfulness of wireless radiocommunication, in my opinion this was now really often debunked.

I would rather give my personal opinion on wirelss headsets:
I would not go back to cable connected headsets, they are uncomfortable, you constantly tangle up in the wire(s) and I like to be able to use my headset for non PC VR on the go too.
I currently have a Pico 4 Ultra, and I can not state that this headset is uncomfortable - it is really light for what it is and sits excellent on the head, even better then the Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro.
The clarity and latency using wifi7 and VD is extremly good, even better wehen using the new steamvr client for vr streaming to the headset.
I admit it is a higher effort setting it up for the first time, after that it is just taking the headset from the shelf and putting it over the head.

My next headset purchase decision will be made by the quality of the leneses and the displays, the connection methode will be secondary.

And my statement for the Samsung headset is still true and backed by reviewers: the screens seem to be top notch (and the lenses).

Maybe another PCVR HMD to begin to have in the radar, by the moment only a crowdfunding project also, “Sharp Xrostella VR1“, the same HP G2 resolution/FOV. Could be the real successor of the G2.

I miss an OLED with that same resolution. Even with dioptres settings, and I read some criticism if only with two cameras, 6DOF is possible, and it don´t says if USB-C(DP).
