Dev mode fps counter download speed reading

Hi

When I bring up the in sim dev mode fps counter, I notice the download speed reading is extremely low, it reads at about 0.5mbps average, on my 1gb fibre line all be it Im on WiFi. The graphics and performance is fine, so why is the reading so low?

Is it just not a true reading, anyone notice the same.

Here is a screenshot, ignore the over exposure.

In this it says my download speed is 0.00mbps!

The download speed will vary greatly during a flight, depending on your aircraft’s location & altitude, the graphics settings you have chosen, and what data is in the rolling cache. It can range from zero to well over 100 Mbps.

Ah ok, my settings are mostly high/ultra with a 128gb rolling cache. I will have to check it over a flight as I’ve not seen it increase past 1mbps in all the times I’ve looked.

Perhaps if I disabled RC, the download speed would increase a lot.

The rolling cache cannot be disabled in 2024 - the minimum size is 16 GB. I see download rates on my pc rising to 140-150 Mbps in photogrammetry areas & at major bespoke airports. Try flying from Frankfurt (EDDF) and touring the city at ~ 1,000 ft & see what’s being downloaded. However, I doubt that you’ll ever see speeds approaching your max bandwidth (1 Gbps).

I think it just means it’s not downloading AT THE MOMENT.

If you watch it when loading in to a new airport, or when looking around, it will jump up as it is downloading, then fall back to zero.

You could also use HWInfo, and look at the Current, Low, High, Average values. Average is meaningless unless you measure a sustained download.

Also, I’m not sure if MSFS is requesting / downloading all of the various data from 1 source, or multiple sources, during a flight.

Thanks will try that tomorrow.

I definitely don’t expect to see 1gbps speeds, I’m on WiFi anyway and top out at about 400-500mbps on Speedtests, and I think it’s throttled even more in msfs.

There are multiple connections to multiple addresses during a flight, e.g.:

Btw, on my 1GB fiber connection it can easily spike to over 600Mbps depending upon where I’m flying.

This ties into the misconception that 2024 is a “streamed” game - it simply streams the bulk of its assets into rolling cache upon first use, and your system then reads it from your local storage.

I wouldn’t expect anything less. To think all of this data could be streamed real time in which the game directly interacts with would be quite demanding on your internet connection. I think maybe we’re arguing the “purity” factor of streamed games here.

Good to know. My Starlink maxes out at ~ 250 Mbps, and I rarely see speeds >150 Mbps during flight. (The connection can download more though. I’ve seen 300 Mbps when downloading GPU driver updates from Intel).

For reference, a typical 4K TV broadcast requires about 50 Mbps (Mega bits, not bytes). I was getting spikes of 300 (roughly, I think) for 5-10 seconds or so, loading in the 787 in to KJFK
