DHC-2 Beaver engine shuts down

I have a problem with the DHC-2 Beaver

  1. Suddenly the engine shuts down in flight, sometimes even during taxiing.
  2. The trim changes in flight.

Anyone have the solution?

The engine shuts down during taxi if fuel pressure is too low or if you lean too much, because the engine driven pump cannot provide enough pressure at low RPM… You can either use the hand pump or switch on the electric pump or throttle up to more than 1000 RPM and/or set the mixture to full rich.

Does the trim change rapidly?

A slow trim change occurs whe the rear or front tanks get empty. It is correct procedure to empty the rear tank first (except if tip tanks are installed, which we don’t have (yet)).

Ahh! Thank you!

But why does the engine shut down in the air. Is it for the same reason?

It never shut down in flight for me, that’s strange.

My engine shut down during the flight also. I just presumed I’d run out of fuel but forgot to check as was too busy trying to glide and land on a lake. Thinking about it I didn’t even fly far enough to run out of fuel.

If you begin your flight with 50% fuel and switched to the rear tank it might be drained in less than 15 minutes.

It happened for me as well. But I realized I used the front tank and almost depleted it

The engine still stops after about 20 minutes. I have a full tank in both front and rear tanks. I fly a route with some runways at 7-8000 feet. Could it be the high altitude that is the reason?

I flew at 8000 to 10000 ft and the engine never stopped.

Could it be the way you are leaning? And the manual says that at high altitudes the electric fuel pump can/should be switched on (I didn’t, though).

Can you upload a screenshot showing the mixture lever position once you are at high altitudes?

A quick video how I lean the Beaver at altitude.

Okey. I have about the same as you but you seem to maneuver yours continuously.

Thank you!

I just put it forth and back in the video to show when the engine starts to loose power. I normally leave it alone and make adjustments every 1000 feet altitude change.

Okay. I flew my route now about 1 hour, 8 airports. I had the electric fuel pump on almost all the time. Not a single engine stall! Thank you for your support. I have flown the Beaver as a passenger in real life but that was a long time ago.

You have been changing the selected tank to draw from, right? (just checking  )

Yes! No it works!
