I’m noticing that aircraft are looking extremely poorly detailed when not all that far away with OLOD at 200.
Shouldn’t they look better than this? That is not that far away, and I’m running at 4K.

We’ve been missing details like landing gear on planes at moderate distances for at least several months (if not longer); I don’t think anything’s changed more recently than that.
It isn’t just the landing gear. The bodies of the aircraft on the left are really blocky.
Right. The lower LODs are missing many details.
Yea I think they moved the LOD goal post with SU15. At least with PC you all can turn it back up a reclaim what you had… for us on Xbox we are stuck until they turn it back “on” with a new beta. (SU16)
I have it turned all the way up and it looks like that!
To get it any higher (if it even works this way), I’d have to edit the user.cfg file and hand enter a value higher than 200.
Oooof I thought it would’ve been higher than that!
I see the same thing. These were taken at Schaumburg Regional (06C). This pic shows an aircraft (red box) with no gear about 450 feet away:
The following are of the two aircraft on the left of the picture, as one moves away from the cub. Distance range from ~330 feet to ~1,000 feet:

It’s not only the vehicles, it’s the buildings, hangers, trees and terrain too.
It seems the camera zoom is also effecting the LOD. Regardless if you’re in cockpit cam, external cam, or showcase/drone cam. If you’re zoomed out to a wide angle the sim simply gives up and quits loading detail. This is also happening as you approach objects/terrain, no matter the zoom, until you’re right next to the loading items. I know there was another issue/bug of when zooming in too far the distant scenery would become blurry, but I don’t think this is related to that.
Here is Bora Bora Motu Mute NTTB. Notice emergency vehicle and palm trees.
Here is St Barts TFFJ. The rock / mountain next to the airport has been hit or miss depending on your distance. Taxi way signs will also disappear or reappear depending on your proximity/zoom level.
Series X. It used to not be like this. Objects, Terrain, Foliage, AND runways used to hold detail at a much further draw distance. Everything is just so blurry and struggling to render now.
Yup - I posted another example of this here.
Sad to see you posted that in the beta nearly a month before the release/publish date of SU15… they really downgraded the sim on purpose. To see these visuals constantly blurring, vanishing and reappearing seems like a bad way to gain performance. They really robbed Peter to pay Paul.
This issue of “camera zoom” effecting detail loading is also effecting whether a surface is “hard” or non existent.
I was landing on ships near Honolulu, HI with sea front sims addon. I’ve flown here a ton of times. I’ve landed on all the ships and especially this tanker, a lot. I was looking around in external cam and my heli kept falling through the ships deck. I thought that’s strange, I didn’t pause, I know the issue of pausing on “live” moving ships causes you to fall behind. But this was just me falling through the deck as if it wasn’t there. Then I realize I was zooming out in external cam to take in the sights! Sure enough the heli falls through as soon as I zoom to a wide angle! Here are some screen shots from landing in external view. Falling through with wide angle and landing with a moderate / telephoto angle.
It’s bad enough with all the details appearing in front of me. Now the floor has literally been stripped out from under me! It’s unbelievable.
OLOD only manages scenery objects, so it will only change airplanes which are always static, meaning that airport creator added them as scenery. Generic airports don´t have them, just some handcrafted or third party airports. The AI traffic is made of SimObjects and their detail can´t be changed by user as far as I know. You can only select to use the generic 3D models for traffic.
Regarding zoom the LODs change because current LOD policy is based on the object size on the screen, not on distance to objects from player position. Zoom in will display objects bigger in screen and zoom out will display them smaller. That change of size can trigger the LOD0 to LOD1 (high detail to medium) or LOD1 to LOD2 (medium to low) transitions, not only on the 3D model itself but also on the hard surfaces included in the object. If any of the LODs does not include the hard surface or it´s not properly aligned at 3D model then helicopter can fall completely into sea or partially into 3D model.
Cheers
Is garbage. The current LOD is unacceptable. Again it used to not be like this
Definitelly. But I think this is the result of main thread limitation which never was as overloaded as it is with SU15, so most likely LODs needed to be reduced once more to stay on a decent performance level, and that´s still one of the lowest performance figures we had during the past 4 years.
I just flew VFR today for 15min in a random countryside area in northern Germany coast and below 1000ft main thread latency couldn´t go below 30ms, so you are getting around 33fps just due to main thread. Main thread froze two times, during 5s and during 10s, in such a short flight. Other threads and GPU were in the 10ms range, so they still worked quite well there and they would therefore allow a really good performance if main thread was healthy. I have been getting figures in the range of 45fps for many months in such VFR scenarios.
SU15 is really broken. You can´t use game at all if even in such a short and generic flight you face those errors and so low performance. We can´t wait till end of the year to get this eventually fixed by SU16. We need a technical hotfix in short time.
Cheers
