Difference between Rex 2020 and Unreal weather- live metar mod?

Both are metar based, so whats the difference?
Does Rex shows better cloud layers?

Unreal is solely METAR based, so what you see on the METAR is what you get. Sometimes that’s perfect sometimes it might look off. Also, winds aloft are just a value a bit higher than surface winds.

REX apparently does use some sort of weather models to fill in the gaps, and apparently uses real-world weather models for winds aloft. But some people have issues with REX on their systems and some reports of shoddy software.

Give unreal a try, its free after all.

Thanks but rex also is based on metar data, is it precision like metar mod? Already tested this free mod and works great, winds, direction, temps, rain etc is identical to latest metars… So do Rex?

Yes REX is METAR-based as well but is supposed to fill in the gaps with model data for areas without great METAR coverage. And uses models to get proper winds aloft, supposedly, I’ve been on the fence about purchasing it.

I don’t know if REX fixes this problem, but one problem with METARS is they only report clouds to about FL120 or so and will often say it’s clear if clouds are higher than that.

Unreal works well for flying low and slow, but without winds aloft data it would ruin any high-altitude flight planning using real-world data. I have no idea how well REX implements winds aloft.

REX’s winds aloft are not great. They are somewhat in the direction of the model, but do not represent the correct speed. The upper temperatures are way off. The temperature follows a linear gradient and if you get above FL400, temps are -100C. That causes problems with turbofan thrust settings.

Unreal Weather will let you set updates to any time period and REX will only go as low as 5 minutes. This can be a problem when you are flying a fast jet through a front and weather is changing quickly.

Sure, Active sky (il they want to develop for FS2020) will fill gaps between metar, winds and layers. Hope that

REX works very well with the latest released update.

As far as I understand it, because the weather system is looked in mfsf, both rex and unreal weather are very limited in what they can do, and so you won’t see clouds rolling in or a storm approaching like you would in the default weather engine. It’ll take the weather to whatever the metar says at the time and apply that to the entire world.
Because of this, and until Microsoft allows third party developers to access the full features of the weather system, I’ll he mostly sticking to the default.

I’ve been using Unreal, which has been working great (except for winds aloft), but it doesn’t seem like this fixes it, and does the same thing. Is that correct?

Weather Force does utilize winds aloft.

Does Rex fix the exaggerated icing problems with airliners and clouds? Even though I have icing set to ‘Visual Only’ I am still experiencing a jittery Altimeter in various stages of the climb, huge fuel consumption on Climb Out to TOC and also takes almost to TD to reach TOC. Surely someday this will be fixed but in the meantime I was wondering if REX somehow bypasses the icing parts, although I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Using Rex while flying the FBW 320mod I just turn on ice for engines and wings when it says ice deteched and turn it off when it says no ice. If you forget I think there is still an affect on your lift if you ingnore it with Rex.

Do I understand correctly that REX detects and lets you know ice is building up? I use a 3rd party 738 and so far in the sim Anti Ice Engine and Wing and Pito Heat doesn’t seem to help so I was wondering about REX.
