DLSS Frame Gen not working

DLSS Frame Gen seems to be non-functional. It works in 2020, but in 2024 there is no difference in frame rate whatsoever. I tried it with the bundled DLSS version and I swapped in the latest DLLs, no dice.
Win11, 7950x3D, 4080, latest drivers, etc.

Yep, have noticed that frame generation (and even DLSS) have little effect in 2024 on my 4060 ti. In 2020 using both frame gen and DLSS doubled my FPS from 40 to 80 with all settings on Ultra over TAA. In 2024 the same thing gives only a modest 5 fps difference (or even sometime no difference).

I think this is part of a bigger problem with GPU under utilisation generally in MSFS 2024 when using DLLS and frame gen. WIth DLSS and frame gen enabled, my GPU load often drops noticeably along with a drop in smoothness and FPS. My system isn’t CPU limited as all cores are not being stressed, so there’s no logic in the GPU usage drop, as it can happen in any area, detailed or sparse.

I have had some success with a solution though. Using the Nvida app I have DSR factors enabled for 1.78. This then allows me to change my default resolution in MSFS from 3440x1440 to a higher resolution of 4587x1920. The theory being that your Nvidia GPU renders the image at the higher resolution it is capable of achieving, and then downscales it to your monitors native resolution. The savings come by being able to reduce your MSFS config settings. I dropped my settings from High to Medium, and DLSS resolution from Balanced to Performance. These config reductions see little noticeable drop in image quality when used in conjunction with DSR. To my eyes it even looked better. The result is similar quality as native 3440x1440 on High settings, but with much smoother and more consistent performance.

In 2020 using DSR saw no benefit, but in 2024 it really seems to make a big difference by utilising my GPU better. I am getting a nice solid 70 fps with a GA aircraft in regional areas and 60FSP in detailed areas like Sydney YSSY. All without the mysterious GPU usage drop offs I had before using DSR.

You can see evidence of the odd GPU performance loss in this MSFS review from about 13 minutes. He doesn’t explore DSR as a solution though.

I am having the same issue. The MSFS 2024 FPS counter under debug and Nvidia overlay shows the same FPS.

It appears that the performance is worse in MSFS 2024 than MSFS 2020. I get less FPS in 24 with ultra than in 20.

FRAME GEN On

I absolutely do NOT experience this in FS2024. Without framegen enabled my FPS in GA aircraft ranges from 40 - 60 fps in complex scenery. Enabling framegen results in 75 - 115 fps. In fact, flying the Tukan Ford Tri-Motor at around 3,000’ feet above LA, I was pegging out at my sim’s capped framerate of 120 fps for much of the flight. This is with an RTX 4070 Ti Super with 16GB of VRAM.

One thing I’d strongly suggest people to do is explore the latest Nvidia app and dig into the Nvidia Control Panel. I noticed a new (new to me) toggle in the NVP related to VRAM usage. It allows the GPU to use shared video memory rather than restricting it to just VRAM. This is done to prevent out-of-memory crashes if the game oversubscribes available VRAM. However, if you DO have this option enabled, I also very strongly suggest you confirm you have your GPU plugged into the highest-spec PCIe slot on your PC (not all PCIe slots are the same - depends on your PC motherboard model!) and verify you have RESIZABLE BAR enabled in your BIOS. There’s a GamersNexus (I think! Might be Hardware Unboxed) video deep-dive out there about shared video memory, PCIe generation and bandwidth, and RESIZABLE BAR settings that goes into great detail regarding all of this.

Anyway, another factor that may be at play is a key that many don’t seem to realize: when the sim loses focus, frame generation is not active. So if you have two monitors and click into your second screen, framegen is disabled. If Windows pushes another program to the focus, framegen is disabled. I’ve determined that having Outlook running, even minimized to the taskbar, will cause the sim to lose focus. There are probably other common offenders for this as well. If you notice this happening, it’s probably worth runnng the sim with the fewest possible other programs/apps on your PC for a while to help narrow things down. If you’re running a good real-time performance monitor like MSI Afterburner with the OSD enabled you’ll see this happen in real-time.

Frame gen working good at my end too.

This is so strange. It wasnt working for me. After I refunded and got the sim again in game pass it worked. Today after a Bios Update I had to “repair” the sim in MS Store and its gone again. I can choose DLSS but it doesnt work. RTX4080

Any ideas?

Solved it. Needed to disable dev mode and that doubled my fps.

You don’t need to go without Devmode. Just make sure Smart docking system is disabled under options.

Hi friends, I read through everything in the post for FS2020, and I have exactly the same problem with FS2024. I’ve tried everything, absolutely everything. The frame generation is grayed out for me too, even though it used to work when I was able to adjust it. I also seem to have updated to Windows 11 in the meantime, so HAGS is also on! I also have two graphics cards: an RTX 4070TI OC and a GTX 750. I hope you can help me. Thanks, Rolando.
