Not a necessity.
Hi ,
As i know only realy helps and work is G-Sync over Nvidia and a Monitor with G-Sync Hardware not one with G-Sync compatibilty.
But this Monitors aren´t cheep and you have to find one that feets
your feeling - means not all Formats have that Option.
But need - i dont realy know
cheers
…and be aware if your graphics card is NVIDIA and your monitor Freesync the latest NVIDIA drivers don’t work well with that combination if GSync is turned on. (Well it doesn’t with my ACER 4K Freesync monitors)
Sorry should have said, I’m building an AMD spec machine, hence the freesync question.
Any feedback or comments on Dell 4K monitors?
AFAIK the only need for this feature is for super high frame rates, which you will likely not get in Flight Simulator. (Most people get ~20-40fps from what I can tell from the forums, with a few people with high-end rigs getting 60.)
Definitely no. If you are going to use it only for MSFS don’t worry. You wouldn’t get to much frames to care about the freesync.
I’d say - definitely go for it.
FreeSync (as well as G-Sync, if you’re in the nVidia camp) is the most important feature in PC graphics you can invest into these days, especially when dealing with higher resolution display modes. If you already know, it enables a variable framerate, which, in turn, helps eliminate 2 noticeable artifacts - frame skipping/stuttering (when V-Sync is on) and tearing (when V-Sync is off). That really pays off when your framerate is not good to begin with, i.e. when the resolution is higher and you want to increase your in-game graphics settings to their maximum.
I am using one of those monitors myself and I will never go a back to a regular one for gaming. If you get it, most often you will stop caring about the actual frame rate, believe me.
Reminder: V-Sync should always be set to “off” with those monitors.
I’ve been using a GSync monitor - Alienware AW3418DW 34" 3440x1440 @ 100/120Hz. One of the best investment I’ve made, most all games run very smooth MSFS2020 included. In MSFS2020 I’m mostly getting 30 to 40 FPS (3440x1440) with a little fluctuation up/down depending on weather or inside/outside cockpit (most things on Ultra, TAA, Scalling 100, …). GSync helps alot under these conditions as it doesn’t have a working “range”. From my understanding FreeSync has a limited range of around 40-75Hz. In the case of MSFS2020 my framerate is under that range so FreeSync wouldn’t be of much help. My $.02
i7-9700k, GTX1080ti (3080 when I can find one), 32GB, MSFS2020 on NVMe drive.
Got a 1440p freesync monitor last month and i couldnt go back now.
I wouldnt so much look at it as unecessary due to msfs running fine at 25/30fps.While this is true, look out of the window at the scenery and it just isnt smooth, a slight jutter that you cant unsee.
It is completely gone now and i love it - so fluid and smooth.
Its a small difference and do you ‘need’ one? Ofcourse not, but if youre in the market for a monitor anyway as i was, wouldnt do any harm to grab one with freesync.
So you NEED a Freesync / G-Sync monitor?
No.
Is it nice to have?
Hell yeah!
Careful though, particularly if you’re buying it specifically for MSFS. Not all Freesync implementations are equal. By spec, it can activate from 9Hz to 240Hz. But many monitors will only implement it starting at 40-50 Hz. If you have one of said monitors, but you’re unable to consistently push 40+ fps in MSFS, it won’t do anything for you.
In the end though, even if you do get one, the benefits of variable refresh rate technologies really shine at high frame rates to synch up frames and prevent tearing and artifacts. At low frame rates, that tends to not really be an issue. It can help smooth out visual stutter a bit, but I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference.
But if you play a lot of other games where you can push high frame rates, then it’s totally worthwhile to get.
