I live 10 minutes from DEN and directly under an approach path. Plane Spotting is as easy as stepping out on to my balcony!
You would think that they would have fixed the pushback by now!
Here’s some screenshots from my Adelaide locals.
First up, Adelaide international airport YPAD. A regular award winning airport, 10 mins from the city centre and an approach right over West Beach. Late night curfew operates due to noise.
Next is Parafield YPPF, GA and regional, helis and schools etc. And a ridiculous number of runways for any airport within the metro area.
Then there’s Aldinga YADG, a local GA airfield with an assortment of grass and an asphalt runway. Biplane tours, flying club, very nicely modelled cafe, helis. Set amongst the vines of the McLaren Vale wine region and just a stone’s throw from the spectacular Silver Sands drive on beach at Aldinga town.
If I’m role playing my life as an airline pilot, my base in KDEN, I like to commute up there from my local field. KFLY Meadow Lake. There is a beautiful freeware(I think) of it for the PC users. I’ll hop in commuter Kodiak and fly to DEN, park at the exec terminal and off to work!
Nice full moon in Columbus tonight. Thought I’d check it out. Maybe I’ll fly to it tomorrow.
Guess I’ve never thought about a single home airport. I’m near a small, a medium size and very big one I fly out of sometimes.
Driven by the area on I65 many times.
Back in 1978 my boss and two buddies were finished riveting their homebuilts with VW air-cooled engines and wanted me to hang out the side of a cub to take pictures of them flying their new birds out of Meadow Lake.
The pilot of the cub warned me there was a powerline at the end of the runway as he lifted off but did not rotate. We raced a foot or so off the ground till almost the end of the runway, then he pointed the nose straight up till the stall horn began to whimper, then jerked the nose level as we topped the powerlines.
As we rondevoued, he suggested I not fall out the open side of the plane.
On the way back he explained he had cancer and was not afraid of dying…I had already figured that out.
Love it!! Great story! I really enjoy watching the low approach into Rwy 15 from either Stapleton or Hwy24 as I’m driving along. Such a great local airfield
Agree with you that EHMZ is a nice airfield.
I was lucky to fly between EHTE and EHMZ several times with my brother, who was the owner of a flight school with 3 GA planes.
Those planes ( a piper warrior and 2 F22-C’s were/are maintained at EHMZ)
Nice detail : the snert with rookworst and the club sandwich with a chilled glass of milk at the local ‘restaurant’
How’s possible to meet someone here who’s familiar with EHMZ, do you still go there? I’m saving to get my license there in the future.
Yep I agree with you…
I’ve got a couple local airports, but in the sim I consider Sylvania (C89) to be my home base. It’s a nice little strip on the edge of city and county. There’s some farm land to the west that I like doing aerobatics over. I do a lot of touch & go practice here as well as STOL practice. The sim marks two runways - the paved strip and the grass along side it. I’m not sure if they really use the grass as a strip in real life, but I use it quite a bit in the sim. In real life, Skydive Midwest flies their Twin Otter in and out of here all day long while doing skydive runs. You can actually see the Twin Otter on the satellite imagery.
If anyone flies out of this location, I recommend doing some touch and goes around the area at other nearby airports (KRAC, KENW, KBUU), fly over Bong Recreation Area to the southwest. It was intended to be a military base but the plan was abandoned and it was turned into a state park. You can still see where the runway was intended to be. Or you can follow the interstate on Sylvania’s eastern edge north up to Milwaukee and explore the largest nearby city. You can also head south down to Chicago. Of course, you can also head east to Lake Michigan and follow the coast either way.
That looks like a beautiful area to fly. I’ve been to Elkhart Lake a long time ago, so if the scenery. Is any where close to that it has to be beautiful territory.
I like it so far, nice places to check, the locals can give the best information

What a view the pilots must get on westbound flights outta DEN on a clear day. The Rockies laid out before them.
I was very lucky to fly DEN-SFO years ago on a United 757. That thing climbs like a homesick F-15 in full burner. Got a great view of the mountains.
you should see the view from my office. On a clear day i can see the Flatirons and Red Rocks Ampitheater. Actually i was able to get a pic of the terminal hotel from Red Rocks some 30-40 miles when i went to a concert there a couple months ago.
I was actually more impressed by my phones camera more than the ability to see the terminal that far away.
My closet two to me are GA) Williamson Sodus and KROC ( for international airports) and I go to visit family in Charlotte nc so Charlotte is like my technically my second Local airport because I am looking at investing in undeveloped land in the area between Charlotte NC in the smoky mountains and foot hills
Since moving to Myrtle Beach a couple years back, KMYR is now my home airport, I enjoy costal flying up to my former home airport of Bradley CT KBDL, and visiting my step daughter down in Titusville FL at Space Coast Regional KTIX.
Love the simpler flying of the TBM that makes the routes between “almost” jet like in speed.
KAGC
It’s the closest towered airport to me and can handle a 737. But no super long taxing from GA as well.
Its auto-gen in MSFS and the beautiful and recently restored Art Deco terminal is not done justice in the sim. I’m really hoping some developer out there does a proper version of it. There is an overpriced FSX port of it but based on the photos its poor compared to today’s standards.
Today I did some testing at my local airfield. Mostly for graphics.
EHMZ
I mentioned this also somewhere else, it would be so nice to have graphics presets you can save, I use different settings flying low and slow and with the big airliners. Like 5 would be already more than enough.
Anyway here you go:
