Does having WU's (World Updates) for areas I hardly every fly in affect MSFS performance

Does having WU’s (World Updates) for areas I hardly every fly in affect MSFS performance ?
If I hardly ever go to those countries/continents and generally fly in the US, would deleting those World Updates have any affect on the FS performance. I suspect not since they are only files sitting in waiting but I thought I might ask the question anyway.

I am NOT Talking about having Photogrammetry ON or OFF. I am only referring to downloading and Storing WU areas that I never fly in.

Obviously, it will make my weekly backup at bit faster.

Unless the WU has coding that is applied to the sim as a whole, like SUs for example, it does not.
It can however, effect performance for the area that received the WU (UK is a good example of this). But in general has no effect to areas outside of the ones that received the WU.

That’s interesting - can removing the UK World Update result in a performance gain then?

There is good evidence of a performance issue with photogrammetry.

Some combinations of photogrammetry cities from the world updates have been documented to affect performance in other parts of the world.

No need to remove it. If you don’t fly around London with photogrammetry on, then you’re fine. If you do fly in London, or large cities with heavy Photogrammetry, like Paris as well, but prefer to have performance you can simply turn Photogrammetry off in the display options.

note: Not all photogrammetry cities and areas have heavy performance hit.

Im not sure It will anything for performance, but ive done it for the disk space. Like the norway update, it was uneventful so its gone.

Official folder before -191 gb
training missions deleted - 186 gb
Nordics WU removed - 179 gb
Australia WU removed - 175 gb
Unused aircraft - 172 gb

Every little bit helps

I’m going to have a play with PG settings and see what happens.
I’ve gone back to using my Series S in the meantime… the sim is just so fluid on it that it’s a joy to fly planes on
So far only 2 CTDs in past fortnight but I don’t use the A320 or B787 or any third party airports

The PG cities can actually be installed or uninstalled separately from World Updates, and they’re just a few kilobytes in size generally. I have them all installed (except maybe Germany), but some people said they got better performance when they uninstalled some or all of them. This way they can still leave photogrammetry enabled in data options, for the areas they do want it.

Wow I’m going to do the same.
I rather save that space for addons!

Thanks - great explanation… I may uninstall the ones I don’t want and see whether it makes a difference

In order to save space disk take into accont that you don’t need to install (or unistall if installed): aircraft, aircraft liveries, airports and scenery that you’ll never use.

I seem to remember in FSX, you could have masses of scenery files on your PC, and then actually in FSX, you could check off, which ones you wanted loaded into the sim, when the sim was running.

Shame that design concept got lost in MSFS.

I claimed those world updates but I don’t install them until I absolutely need the airport that I’m flying for that flight. after that, I uninstalled them again.

Come to think of it, I have hundreds of contents in my account that I don’t install, it’s a lot lighter that way.
