Doubts about Quest 2

Hi!
I just tried for a while the sim in VR.
I have a Quest 2, the version of the sim is the one of the Microsoft Store. As PC hardware, I have a 3080.

The first thing I noticed is that runways look awful, it doesn’t matter what I change in the settings. I can see the very small details of the tarmac if I look close to the aircraft, but if I look just a bit far I can’t distinguish anymore the painted lines of the runways.
The second thing I noticed is that the experience is overall smooth-ish, meaning that it’s playable, but I read about people with worse hardware that have a better experience than mine. I run the sim with medium-low settings, honestly I hoped that it would have been better with a 3080.
The third thing I noticed is that the sim often crashes to desktop.

I also read about OpenXR, Oculus betas, etc.: honestly, I didn’t understand very much what to do. When I tried the Oculus beta, I had strange issues with the cameras: the sim was running with the outside view of the aircraft, and I couldn’t switch to the cockpit view. So, I came back to the default version of Oculus. Connected to this point, I had to disable the FOV stencils to solve the issue of the black boxes.

I kindly ask if you have any advices for me. I guess I’m missing something, because I really read about people being very happy with old-gen graphic cards and ol;der headsets.

Thank you very much!

Did you update to the latest version of Oculus Beta. Had the stencil issue and updated. All gone! The screen is crisp and the VR looks good…

Yeah it is the same way for me. The runway lines look awful, they are blurry blobs that change size as you get near them. If there is snow on the runway it appears and reappears depending on proximity. It’s also a stuttering mess that makes me nauseous if I fly for more than a few minutes, not to mention the nonstop flickering that is almost like it’s switching camera views for a split second randomly. Even 2D performance is poor, and it used to be perfect with every single slider maxed out. Every update seems to degrade something else it seems. VR in MSFS has a long way to go before it’s worth it unfortunately.

This is on a 1080 with a CV1, also have an old DK2 on an old computer with a 970 that actually performs about the same. Very little difference between them oddly enough.

I have to disagree. I have the Reverb G2 and MSFS in VR is fantastic :grinning:
When I first go into VR mode, it’s rather slow for a minute or two (I’ve no idea why) but once it clears I get a good, clear & smooth experience. Certainly worth it.

ps: I sold my CV1 to help pay towards the G2

There’s not a massive difference between the G2 and the Quest 2 - yet people with G2 are saying their experience is amazing, and Quest 2 are not. So maybe it’s a software issue?

The issue your having is a setting that needs adjusted. I once had that issue as well but don’t recall what setting was causing it. I am now using a Quest 2 since my HP reverb G2 is being repaired. Now I’m trying to get clairity in the quest 2. The resolution of the Q2 should and can be better than I’m seeing but haven’t gotten it dialed in yet. I’m on the Microsoft store version using the openxr app.

VapeVader,

Try turning your 2D graphics settings (not VR settings) to low including render scaling to lowest. When you switch to VR now it will be smooth from the get go. Try it and let me know how it goes.

Don’t know why I didn’t think of that myself. It’s not like I’m using 2D anymore.
Reduced everything to low/off… & VR is now smooth from the start! :grinning:
Thank you very much! :+1:

I tried it just to try it but the issue isn’t smoothness, it’s clarity. If you are on quest 2. What are your settings in the oculus app for resolution and what are your settings in the OpenXR app for resolution? Btw I am using a Rtx 3090 and oc 8700k 5.1ghz with 32gb or ram and a nvme ssd.

Glad to hear it.

My render scaling goes back to 100% every time I restart, so I have to lower it again every time I start the sim. Hope the same won’t happen to you. Other settings switched to low stay that way.

Sorry I have the G2 and I get very good clarity at 70 TAA and 100 OXR with a 3080. Constant minimum 30 FPS reprojected to 90 Hz.

Got ya. Yeah that’s normally what I use for VR. Oculus isn’t as simple as that though. Can’t wait to get my G2 back from HP as a replacement or a repair.

I’m currently trying this guys guide. If I get it ironed out I will let you know.

Thank you all for your replies.
With the Quest 2, I managed to solve some of the problems, like the one of the awful runway (I saw that in the setting there is a kind of supersampling for these things).
The thing that most triggers me is the fact that the sim still crashes a lot.
For example, I can’t get to the end of the landing challenge of Sydney.
If I get to the end, it crashed during loading…

I am using the Valve Index with RTX 2080TI, it looks really good, runs good no issues with lines on ground or weather.

I had to tweek my settings, can’t have volumetric clouds above Medium. Having the TAA at 100 or higher is more important to me, as the screens are pretty sharp to read the numbers and text on flat panels pretty well. If it goes below the image gets fuzzy…

A lot of my settings are at Medium or high did not see that big of a difference between Medium, high and ultra on some things.

i was running the Vibe Pro prior pretty well, but could not get my TAA number above 90, and keep it smooth, and then the text on flat panels were too fuzzy… The analog gauges looked ok,

At first VR ran so bad at the default settings, but by utilizing tips from this site, and experimenting its pretty good now.

It is no way as clear as Aerofly 2, for some reason that program runs super smooth, and you can crank up resolution and it looks very nice. Like the helicopters in it too, they are pretty close to getting the physics right…

No issues with Quest 2, but I’m using VD and SteamXR set to 100% resolution (not auto), can have the settings pretty high and it’s smoother than Link with Oculus bloat.

That’s interesting. No slowdowns from having to load the extra stuff that wasn’t loaded initially due to low 2D settings?

Actually I solved the thing of the lines, playing with a couple of options that I would have never thought to be related with that issue.

By the way, I discovered that the mother of the crashes was the fact that my page file was disabled (I thought that 32 GB of RAM would have been enough to disable it). Re-enabling it, I solved the crashes.

Now I can’t complain too much, I just did a quick flight with the Daher from Tampa to Orlando, and the experience was quite smooth, except for some hiccups in the frame rate especially at Orlando, but I think it’s due to the sunset conditions, the lights and the traffic. I guess I still have to play with the settings, but it was definitely playable.

Strange right? You would expect slowdowns when switching to VR from low 2D settings…but the exact opposite happens. I don’t understand it but it works, for me and for others.

I have a 3070 and for the life of me I cannot make the experience look half decent.

Whatever I do, the cockpit is awful. I’m not talking about the dials, but the actual buttons. Blurry as hell. To be honest the whole image just isn’t sharp at all.

I upgraded from a 1660 Super to a 3070 thinking that all my problems would go away, but they haven’t.

Spent weeks messing around with the settings! Close to giving up.

Quest 2 users - is your imagine genuinely sharp? As in textures/buildings/cockpit.

Yes

FS is also the first thing that required me to reenable page file in probably more than a decade, it loves RAM…
