Douglas DC-3 - Dual Engine Failures

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to learn how to fly the DC-3 today, and I’m still quite unfamiliar with some of the systems, as I’ve not had chance to read through a POH.

I have had two occurrences now of a dual engine failure at low altitude whilst on approach. It seems the first engine fails followed shortly by the second. Because of the low altitude, I didn’t have time to attempt to restart the engines or even check over the instruments properly other than glances at the RPM and Manifold Pressure gages.

Each time the engines quit, I was on approach at low throttle, flaps somewhere between 1/2 or full, and props/mixture levers to full forward.

Could the issue be prolonged operation at low manifold pressure and high RPM? Could it have been due to slightly high CHT or Low Carb Air temp (within limits),?

With it happening twice now on the only two proper flights I’ve done, I figured it’s likely my fault, but I can’t pinpoint the exact cause.

Any help would be appreciated.

The image below is at the time of failure:

Edit:

I haven’t been touching this “Engine Pump Selector”, which has remained in the default “Take-off” position. Could this have been the likely cause?

In terms of systems fidelity this plane was an empty shell in fs20 and I don’t belive it is any better in fs24… It is just another bug imho

Do you have the Duckworks improvement mod from flightsim.to?

No, just the standard in-game model. I wasn’t aware of an improvement mod.

I’m still on MS2020 so do not speak from experience but I’d be very impressed if your engine failures resulted from improper operation! As Maxuss1579 has said it is most likely a bug as none of the standard aircraft exhibit failure from engine overstress. If you like the DC-3 the Duckworks mod does improve functionality and is definitely worth trying.

I found a recently updated Duckwork’s mod that’s compatible with MSFS 2024 and downloaded it.

The difference is night and day. It’s a completely different experience flying it now. I’ve flown >400nm in bad weather, made multiple take-off and landings on grass and asphalt, short and long, and not had a single issue yet.

One downside to flying this plane, is that the liveries are tied to the variant. You can’t change the livery without also changing the Classic/Modern/Retrofit configuration, which is frustrating.

At least it’s flyable now though.

As you say it does have limitations but is nonetheless a much more satisfying flight experience.
