DX12 Doesn't like 6GB Cards - FPS goes down & takes forever to go up

Hello, DX12 running and while it can be stable and fine at 30FPS it tends to jump down to 25FPS and whatnot and gets stuck for a while before it goes up again.

Yet last snipping, fine for almost 5mins than went down to 13FPS and just won’t go back up. See image

That’s with OBS running also but not even streaming ;( when OBS closed it went to 20FPS. and GPU never made 100% just maxed at 80 to 90. When OBS closed GPU went down to 0%

One option is to have it in Window mode, as I always do - But rather than full screen on my 27inch have it shrunk so that I only see it in the middle of my screen, get full FPS but hard er to see the MSFS as it’s a very small window :frowning:

If you look at the VRAM usage, it’s using more VRAM than available. This causes the overcommitted VRAM to be offloaded on system RAM, resulting in a significant latency penalty and reduced performance.

You should use DX11 with a 6 GB GPU until they optimize DX12 memory usage further.

I do use DX11, tested DX12 and it was far worse than went back to DX11, I still have to have it on Small Window mode. I’m running on Low to Medium and not even getting 30 FPS.

eight days ago for weeks on end I have no problems then that weekend it changed and always getting bad performance now. Even if I turn everything down on the lowest setting it’s still lagging with poor FPS and yet GPU is only at around 60% to 70%

You’ve got something else going on here that’s impacting it.
I have an RTX 2060 6GB OC and not seeing the issues you are.

First off your card/system is not capable of doing streaming/recording at the same time it seems.
I would run tests with no other apps running, in order to maximise your GPU VRAM (ie: no OBS).
Drop your render size a bit too, compare to images below.

See images comparing DX12 vs DX11 @2k.
My settings are high preset with Ultra for a clouds, texture rez, + some others, and TLOD/OLOD 200.
I normally have them at 100 but ran some visual tests and 200 gives nice detail, so seeing what I can get away with.

They are different places and times, but I just started testing SU11 beta, and will do more at the same location next time to properly compare. P-38 is DX11, other one is DX12, same settings otherwise.

Even with just the sim open, and nothing else running is still bad performance Xd

Even when I unlock FPS (I lock it at 30FPS) it’s not even passing over 32 FPS - before about eight days ago it was going over 40FPS. FPS drops so badly when I’m using outside cameras. LOD and other scrolling settings are all set around 90 to 100 and half of my settings are set to low.

I just do not get how my following weeks to months, I have had smooth MSFS at around 31 FPS and streaming with OBS at the same time using the GPU to encode. then last weekend it just changes.

It’s just crazy now that I get bad performance in MSFS on DX11 with low settings than before with nothing else running and the only way to get it smooth is by running the game in Window mode but shrinking it down to very small window

What’s your system specs + GPU?

Using an i7 - 10700k at 5.1 with 32gb memory and 1660TI

Your GPU is pretty much lowest and boderline for running MSFS tbh.
I know people are running 10 series cards, but a 1660ti is really pushing it.
It’s a 1080p card too, and it looks like you are trying to run 2k. That’s too many pixels for it.
Try running at 1080p for starters. You can’t beat physics, not matter how hard you try.

An RTX 2060 is pushing it, and I intend to burn mine out before I splurge on an upgrade.
A 3070ti is the 2K sweetspot card as well but the 8GB is a bit of an issue with MSFS so 3080(ti) might be better.

I don’t want to get into an extended troubleshooting session (sorry, I have some RL stuff going on and just popped in for a quick look) but it looks like you have a time frame reference for when the system changed from “ok” to not “ok”.

You need to look closely at what changed on your system at that point, OS updates, driver update, new app install, app update, or [whatever] and troubleshoot that to hunt down the culprits.

It’s a pita, but if something works “ok” and then suddenly doesn’t, there is always a reason(s).
Hunting it down can be painful sometimes, but if your methodical it will eventually expose itself.

Also check your GPU isn’t dying. It happens, sometimes in stages.

Good luck!

The only change that I made was on that weekend I had to remove my GPU to get behind it. and then I put the GPU back in again. Yet other games like World Of warships or CSGO or whatever run fine on high, in fact, I was doing WOT on Very High and got around 100 FPS while streaming LOL

I have been doing that all week, from drivers to software to settings being reset to hardware. I have improved the system by far, OBS used to run around 20% on idle and got that down to 8% without doing any source changes. CSGO runs far better without lowering the settings.

I was looking at getting a new GPU anyway for some time as I’m saving. Might get hold of one in November and still thinking about what I will be ended up with XD - 3000 series are going out of this world and thinking that I might be better off with a 4080 12GB series to last me a good five years. The price point I’m looking at

Understand that but weird that I’m able to run the full system before then not now Xd

did 3dmark test and also check power/watts and seems that I’m all good. results from 3dmark say all passed and reached the results.

Same issue with 8gb cards. My 2060super isn’t coping well on 3440x1440. I wish the sim had Vulkan support. XP12 is also resource hog on my system but my GPU and CPU are much better utilized.

I’ll be upgrading my GPU. Currently checking out the AMD 6800xt. Those are going for 500-600usd in some places. I honestly refuse to spend another dime on Nvidia cards at this stage.

Anything less than a 3060ti wont give a pleasant experience on the highest settings.

I was looking at RTX 3080 FE from Nvidia store at £650 - out of stock though and the TI edition is £930

its not DX12 vs Vulkan… it is simple : DX12 (Beta)

That wasn’t my point. My rant wasn’t about DX12 vs Vulkan. Think you misinterpreted by post.
Anyway I’m getting off topic.
