Employee vs Freelancer - Please explain

Finally started a company with one C172 doing light cargo to see what it’s all about.

I wonder if there is an easy explanation of Employee vs Freelancer selection in the Missions. The roles seem reversed to me. Tried watching a few videos to understand it but none of them shed any light.

Before I started the company, I could choose any mission I was qualified for. After starting the company a new choice appears: I must select Employee or Freelancer.

What is completely backwards to me is if I choose to act as an employee then all the many missions that were previously available to me appear on the map but there are no cargo missions, although my company only owns a C172 for cargo deliveries. An employee of a company would only be able to fly missions that the company does as it’s business, right?

And I choose Freelancer then I only see missions of C172 in light cargo deliveries - the business that I set up for my company but as a freelance pilot I should not be limited to just the company flights, I should be able to operate independently of any company, and be able to invest any earnings I get through freelancing into my company or to start another company.

So the concept of employee vs freelancer seems reversed in the sim.

Managed to complete an aircraft delivery mission as employee with a good A score, but going back to the company account page I do not see the payout - only all the expenses the company incurred so far.

Wanted to do a cargo delivery so I chose freelancer but none of the missions work - they all say “unexpected error” and “GROUNDED”. Who is grounded, me or the company or the aircraft? Or the sim?

As an employee, you should continue to be able to fly any mission types that you have unlocked regardless of any companies you own. You only get about 10% of the mission reward but you don’t have to worry about the aircraft, maintenance or insurance.

As a freelancer, you will only have access to missions associated with the company or companies you own as well as the aircraft you have purchased. For example, a cargo company with a Cessna 172 would only have access to Cargo - Light missions. To fly Cargo - Medium missions you would need a medium cargo aircraft such as the PC-12 NGX, PC-24, Cessna 208B Caravan, or the Cessna 408 Skycourier. You can purchase multiple companies and up to about 1,000 total aircraft.

In freelance mode, trying to select an aircraft that is damaged and not flyable will result in an unexpected error trying to transfer or select the aircraft for a mission. Simply go to your HQ, view the aircraft for you company, and repair the aircraft you want to use.

“GROUNDED” is referring to the aircraft. Repair the aircraft and you can continue to use it for missions.

Thank you. Obviously I have to just accept the definitions and roles defined, confusing as they are.

Will submit bug reports on the unexpected error and grounding of planes which just left the shop having completed all required maintenance.

I’ve always thought this as well.

Freelancer: Typically someone who can take jobs/contracts as they see fit.

Employee: Usually does the same task every day.
