Excessive amount of trees (2024 trees are even more excessive than 2020)

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: In FS2024 there are too many trees in places where there are in reality no trees. Sometimes this is at higher altitudes where the conditions aren’t suitable for trees to grow, but it can also be at sea level (see example 2). This issue also existed to some extent in FS2020 but the problem seems worse in FS2024 - either that or the trees are more prominent now. The problem is not specific to one location but this example uses two examples - one from the Lake District in NW England, the other from the Greek island of Crete. Other examples include the Scottish highlands. The problem is likely global.

ICAO, coordinates, or specific location:

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? Yes
If yes, are you still experiencing the issue? Yes

Note: My intent with this post is to highlight the excessive quantity and incorrect placement of trees, which wasn’t perfect in MSFS2020 but is far worse in MSFS2024, my complaint here is not about:

  • :x: Photogrammetry trees; yes they look like blobs rather than real trees, but this is just how photogrammetry works, unless there is an army of people or clever tech to remove the trees from the photogrammetry mesh.
  • :x: Tree replacement/improvement addons; since they aren’t for everyone it might be better to discuss their usage in whatever dedicated posts there are for such addons.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

  1. Launch free flight at 54.4438054389389, -3.094968719885806 OR 35.148687646295, 24.474686812085867 OR 28.108621992293905, -16.76471923472675
  2. Look at the trees
  3. Look at real aerial photography of this region. Also compare with the same in MSFS 2020.

The autogen tree placement in MSFS2024 is a total setback!

There are too many trees everywhere, in pasture only areas there are now forests, in crop or farm areas there are now forests, in many areas where there shouldn’t be trees there are now. In almost any area I fly this happens to me, it is practically a regional error, an error of the AI that did a very bad job in detecting trees, and now what do we do? This can’t stay like this, it’s like flying in fantasy scenarios, it’s no good for IFR.

This did not happen in MSFS2020 where the location of trees was much more accurate.

For this issue I asked for a refund. It is useless to fly in sceneries with poorly placed trees autogen.

and it’s not just a small region, it’s all over the world!

Ibiza is a Jungle!

Palm springs doesnt have THAT many trees:

Agreed. Almost everywhere I’ve flown so far - and where I know the area, there are far too many trees - even in areas with meadows and fields. (Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Austria, U.S. East Coast)

Also the game now seems to recognize brown volcanic ground as forests (i e. Canary Islands)

It is quite disappointing to fly over the Hebrides and see masses of trees everywhere. In reality, there are virtually no trees left in the Outer Hebrides although there are projects to restock. MSFS however just throws trees everywhere, I think the scenery guys can’t comprehend that there are green areas in the world where trees are scarce.

Agreed with OP. It is a bit of a shame given how great the new scenery autogen aspects are otherwise. I presume it’s got something to do with the machine learning and how it is interpreting the satellite imagery. I suspect that it gets a bit trigger happy when it ‘sees’ darker patches.

In 2020 I’d noticed a kind of correlation with the worst affected areas generally being those that had the lowest resolution satellite imagery - made sense to me - harder for the machine learning to interpret blurrier imagery.

But in 2024 it’s putting down excess trees in areas which appear to have quite high resolution, so either my theory is flawed or something has changed in the Azure algorithm.

I hope it can be fixed with some coding tweaks because some of the grass-land hills / plains in the foothill parts of the western US which are great for putting down bush planes (Idaho, California, Oregon, Wyoming etc) are often swarmed with trees so landing is a no go.

I mentioned elsewhere the masses of trees in places like Sutherland in Northern Scotland when in reality, as you say, there should be very few. Even trees at the top of mountains or on small rocky islands off the coast. Also the single track roads up there have been given street lights. I’d have thought the AI would have got better at this over the past 4 years as it really spoils the experience. Hopefully it’s something that can be tweaked.

I think that this issue, while it seems to be purely cosmetic, is having a direct impact on the career mode bugs that are being constantly reported, such as taxiing through trees, etc.

Italian cities look more like a forest than a city. Way to much trees, where are definitely no ones in real world.

I am surprised how in MSFS2020 the trees were well placed. It was much more realistic. In MSFS2024 instead of getting better it got worse. There are trees everywhere, you can’t distinguish houses or roads, there are forests that don’t exist. The AI did a very bad job and should do it again. It is useless to fly in global sceneries where there is an excessive amount of trees that do not even exist. We have to demand an urgent Global Tree Fix

I really don’t understand how MS doesn’t realize the extent of the problem. That’s already something I didn’t like in 2020. I realized how bad the tree situation is on my very first flight flying and landing in NYC. They should give us the option to not generate trees at all, or at least, less. It honestly would look better at this point.

it’s not just that they are tall, it’s that now in MSFS2024 there are too many trees, even forests and trees everywhere that don’t exist, it’s too annoying. The scenery is very unrealistic. The AI did a lousy job in detecting the trees this time and Asobo should make a global Tree Fix urgently.

I was thinking the same thing.
Far too many trees in certain places and also with cathedral sizes.
For example in the Punta Cana region, trees are everywhere and of unrealistic height.

I think the AI must interpret green zones as forest zones…

It looks like someone fixed it faster than MS, but at a price.

Agreed, way too many trees and way too tall as well. All trees are like 20 to 30m (100feet)…

Trees are all over the place, too much in cities, too much allmost everywhere, even in steppe areas and deserts like dubai. Doesnt internet have proper knowledge to know where them trees are. Now its like rainforest.

I concur. Most heli pads are surrounded by large trees. Not sure if it is caused by bad data or imagery, but what are small bushes in real life, turn in to large trees in the sim. I would guess about 90% of bushes become fully grown trees. At least in 2020 we could see the terrain, albeit less detailed terrain.
