Excessive lighting at night still not fixed

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
While many MSFS airports have been too dark at night, LOWS has the opposite issue and instead ends up being too bright. This is the WU18 version of the airport.
Beautiful airport but blinding when taxiing towards the terminal. When you get in close to lit objects it can look somewhat acceptable, but at any distance the exposure system can’t handle it. This is not a complaint at the exposure system in general as it can handle lights at other airports okay. Something must be quite different in the way these lights are defined.

ICAO, coordinates, or specific location: LOWS

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

No. Believe it is not necessary as I have no add-ons affecting lighting or the scenery near LOWS.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

At night.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Spawn at LOWS at night
  2. Observe the lights at different distances

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using, if relevant:

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

Not using developer mode but on SU2 beta. Noticed this problem before entering the beta.

[PC, MSFS 2020 Only] Are you using DX11 or DX12?

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use?

RX 9070

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

I’m no graphics programmer but it kinda looks like there’s a missing minus sign in the shader responsible for night light spill causing it to get brighter further away rather than closer. Looking at the screenshots (at least the ones with terrain close to the camera) it appears everything near the camera has almost no spill/bloom onto the terrain (terrain is very dark) but everything further away has extreme bloom onto the terrain. How embarrassing would it be if this whole thing was just a single - typo? The ultra bright spotlights seem like a separate problem.

Couldnt have explained it better myself. This must be fixed. Simply unacceptable that night flying currently looks like this.

That’s the thing: they didn’t look at that

Was flying around Kiruna and was seeing no sepia mask and for a moment I thought “OMG, they fixed this!”. But then i see a glow in the distance, I’m like “oh, no” and sure enough, suuuuper lit area around a very small town. :frowning:

Its not fixed. Even with SU2. Ugly Sepia map still present everywhere. Clouds to bright in the night too.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

When flying at night in Las Vegas (the Las Vegas Strip), all the lights are overblown and the FPS drops dramatically in 2D and in VR modes.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

YES. In fact, I did a complete fresh re-instrall of MSFS 2024 to make sure.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Every time.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Free flight, fly out of Mc Carran airport OR choose Las Vegas Strip as flying area
  2. Make sure you pick a time at night (the issue is completely gone during the day)

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using, if relevant:

I don’t think peripherals matter in this case.

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

No

[PC, MSFS 2020 Only] Are you using DX11 or DX12?

[PC Only] Many issues may be due to an outdated graphics card. Please state your Graphics Card Driver Manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) and Version:

Nvidia 576.52. This has been an ongoing issue for several driver versions now.

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

Windows 11, 23H2. RTX 3090. Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB RAM.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• yea

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• aircraft and poi lights affecting simply.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:
• it only takes a night flight over many of the POI or landmarks to see the disproportion of amount of light emited. It’s blinding. Makes nite flying really almost day flying.. really bad.

Please reduce the amount of light being emited by the lights on POI and monuments and others.

I’m not sure if this has been recognized or not but these POIs with the lighting issue are all from 2020 Points of Interest items in My Library. If you don’t care about the POIs themselves and just want the blinding lights gone, you can disable them and the default photogrammetry/autogen with 2024 lighting will appear in its place.

Obviously this isn’t a long term solution especially for those that WANT the POIs, but it’s an option for some.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• just take a flight at night from 70-100nm at around FL100 from a dark place towards any xity

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:
• Here’s a screenshot. This is at FL150. Conditions are clear sky, and there isn’t very much going on. The closest city seen in the screenshot is about 20nm and the farthest one is about 70nm. There isn’t a super moon anywhere, there is moon but… check the ground, even the complete unlit and uninhabited places are “lit” from an unknown light. The plane is apparently lit by an unknown light source, and the cities look extremely lit. These are small to mid cities, it’s not NY, it’s La Plata and Buenos Aires.

Just putting this out here for reference for the airport lighting. FS 2020 looks better imo.

The blurry airport lights in FS24 have been fixed in SU3 beta.

Are city lights equally intense as in SU2? As I’ve previously said, they’re like a Christmas tree, completely blown out.

Here’s another example, approach to HECA (El Cairo) at night:

Even the unhabited pieces of land are somehow “lit” by an unknown source (which literally “lits” the ground like radiation).

I don’t understand where does this terrain lighting comes from, since in the middle of the night, uninhabited pieces of land should be pitch dark:

I’m on Xbox. You can’t tweak settings here too much. Gt: EnterDaTiger

I’ll be very specific to the area I’m on cause it’s the one I fly, but have seen this in other areas.

In San Juan (Puerto Rico) when you fly at night over the capital there is an excessive amount of light being emitted by the points of interest, such as El Capitolio, San Felipe del Morro, and the other forts. It is very very bad, blinding, unrealistic , and to the point I stopped flying at night cause it ruined it for me. I’ve posted about it before and still nada.

It’s awful.
I have flown other areas outside of here and have noticed the same excessive light was in areas like New York, etc..

What are these ?? giant light sabers ??
(Im being sarcastic, I know what they are… Lol)

This an alien spaceship or a stadium?

Please fix this. I stopped flying at night because of this. It completely ruins everything, including performance.

I’m going to check these out and confirm if I’m seeing the same thing. (I’ve got the Store version not Xbox.)
The first two will be easy to find, but can you please tell me where the stadium/alien :alien: spaceship is?

That’s the MetLife stadium. Lol

Its brighter at night than during the day. Sigh

And this… It’s the middle of the day and these beams are brighter than the sun!!! Common.

Imho this game is not finished for Xbox. The su2 version which is the latest one still feels like this is a unfinished product. The main menus stutter constantly, loading is hard to watch, and once you finally give it a chance the performance is very mediocre when you try to do anything after a few minutes or go back to the main menu. It’s just about the worse of any sim or game I have ever experienced. I’ve been so close to going back to Msfs 2020, but I’m holding on…

It should have never been like this. Terrible launch since Nov 2024. 1 star at best. Not because of what it can do, but what is not doing and should.

Maybe it’s too ambitious. They should have focused on stability first and then all these other new features that most people don’t care about. Seems it was the other way around.
