Hi, im planning on buying a new PC for msfs and wondering if amd gpu are a good choice… Im currently running an i5 9600k and a 2070. This is a little weak for my resolution 3440x1440
I run a 6800XT at 3440x1440, mix of high/ultra and can get over 60fps in GA planes, 40’s/50’s in airliners but there I’m usually CPU limited on my i7-10700.
If you plan on doing VR, nVidia is generally a better choice. If not, AMD works just as well.
I have a custom-built PC using a Ryzen 9 3900X and an RX5700XT, I get good performance in Full HD and run most settings on ultra and high. I get decent FPS around 30-35 on heavy scenery areas and higher on most places.
Being honest, the rule of thumb has always been to pick NVIDIA as they usually have a bit of better performance in flight simulation. With that being said, with MSFS it has been a bit more subjective as the simulator runs fine in AMD cards, add to that that the sim shares a bit of the same codebase as its XBOX Series X counterpart, which runs on AMD cards, therefore the expectation is that Asobo has an incentive to optimize for AMD GPU architectures.
Best of luck!
I was in a similar situation. I was running an RTX 2060 super i7 10700k on 3440x1440 and it would struggle even on high settings unless I enabled DLSS but that blurred the cockpit displays.
Bit the bullet and bought a new RX6800 non XT for $500. My first AMD card and the performance did not disappoint. Blows through every game I play.
All ultra except the LOD slider @150/100.Any higher on the LODs I become CPU bound.
DX12 beta runs really good with the card. VRAM average is between 10-14gb.
You may want to look into getting a 5800x3d.
If you’re ok with spending 800usd on the upcoming RTX4070ti that will be a solid upgrade.
AMD GPU software a bit buggy so I do not use it. What I have noticed about upgrading to AMD, their midrange GPUs have the raw power delivery while Nvidia GPUs relies a lot on software/ AI to achieve the same results. Nvidia is still ahead in the software department and their higher end cards offer exceptional performance if you can afford it.
i hear great things about this CPU and outperforms some Intel chips. i have the step down with 5800x and it’s still a great processor but the 5800x3d is still about 30% better.
I’m also running a 5500XT which is old but it runs in 1080p just fine. It’s technically 4K possible but i don’t run a 4K monitor. That said grab a 6800 XT at the minimum and you should be on par with a 3070 maybe a 3060. Non Ti
Finally I have my new system. 5800x3d with 4070ti
Holy ■■■■ what a difference
All in ultra and Sliders 400 and 200
Never below 30 FPS even at klax or egll with full fslt Traffic and in the Fenix!
It’s an unreal experience.
