Exploring Papua New Guinea

Tapini to Woitake. I know this area quite well from flights in the ORBX FSX/P3D scenery, so I was eager to see, how this would look in default MSFS. I’m pleasantly surprised

Remember the famous goat trail in ORBX Tapini? It’s here too.

Nice shots. Love flying in PNG. So many of those exciting, dangerous, challenging, very small, sloping, one-way strips are actually included in the Sim. Helped re-build Nadzab airport outside Lae as a very young airport engineer from Australia a long time ago, so quite fond of the place. Thanks for posting. Cheers.

I’m flying from Jayapura to Wewak at dawn in a Diamond DA40. So remote, but even here the scenery is so enjoyable. Just came out of a tropical raincloud after sunrise here. There is no continuous road between the two as shown in Bing maps. Google is obviously more accurate. Nevertheless, its such an enjoyable trip.

Great photos. I’ve got to revisit PNG in MSFS 2020. I spent some time previously touring around in the awesome PilatusPC-6 Porter in X-Plane inspired by these videos from Zehr Air: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKJwwUCUn5oFT1s_cwS1H7Q

Great to watch if you haven’t seen them yet. Really love the custom charting to some of these airstrips. What a cool job!

The ground textures and mesh look already pretty good in the default sim. It would be nice if some creatives create airstrips with the typical vegetation, houses, people, animals and all welcoming eye candy to give you the feeling that you actually visit the ppace. Particularly the vegetation looks the same everywhere in the sim and can give so much more immersion.

Today’s flight was from Sehulea (AYSL) to Pumani Airport (AYPQ) in Papua New Guinea.
I thought the DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver would be a good choice of aircraft for the grass and dirt airstrips that I’d be visiting.

Part 1

This is Sehulea. A fine day for flying in the tropics:

Heading up the coast to Esa’ala:

Crossing over to Salamo (SAM):

Most of these airstrips are hacked out of the forest and have no facilities whatsoever:

Heading to Wapolu (AYWJ)

The airstrips are fairly long, so there is no need to stomp on the brakes after landing:

Leaving Wapolu:

Crossing the strait between Tomodebamu and Bolubolu:

Vivigani (VIV) is the first paved runway I’ve seen:

Part 2

Starting the climb to Mount Vineuo:

Crossing the ridge south of Mt. Vineuo (2,536 m) :

This lines us up for the crossing over to Cape Vogel:

and the airport (CVL):

En route to our destination, Pumani (AYPQ):

which is hiding in the clouds:

Ahh - there it is!

Rwy 20 ends by a small river, should you need to wash the bugs of your windscreen. :slightly_smiling_face:
