Totally agree ever since release back in August 2020 it has been unbelievably painful doing the install and now the updates that are endless. World Update 3 took me best part of two weeks to install just got flying again and oh no, another update that took me three days or more to install now the latest 48 hours in and and I’m at base - bigfiles and have been for 24 hours stalling at between 3 and 7% of downloading the fspatch file. once that is done how long will the cgl flie take. MS / Asobo need to look a the process from and end user perspective not sitting in their studios on a superfast line.
My machine is a well specified i7 with 16gb ram and monitoring the process there is only 6gb in use and I always clear the cache before starting MSFS
My network is fibre to house and I have 150mbs available out of a 900mbs line, something is throttling this back to 20 to 30mbs according to the installer but a net work monitor says the process is using 30 to 40mbs
As I could not use MSFS for an online flying session on the day 1.14.5.0 was released, I switched to X-Plane 11.52 and needed to download additional 13GB of world scenery which took just 8mins. If Laminar Research can do it why can’t Microsoft??
Things to consider:
Allow the user to decide if they wish to take the update at a time of their choice.
Do not force the update as soon as it is available because with 1m plus users all users taking the update at one time will cause congestion.
Change the way the files are down loaded instead of storing in memory write the patch files to file and if there is a hick-up with the network remember the location and restart downloading from there or instead of downloading a whole section of code or data in one block send it as individual files.
Consider that multiple failed attempts to download a file is blocking the server over a 24 hour period the file drops about every minute so that’s 1,440 attempts that should be just one successful download.
All the more reason that MSAsobo provide a robust network to enable users to download the updates efficiently, if not quickly. The download loop is not an inconsequential issue for many people who would, most likely, update without any complaint if they were able to do so. Just like they do with other titles (indeed MS products) without this specific MSFS issue.
I entirely agree. My download of every update has taken days of work. The latest update was proceeding slowly and was then interrupted by a power failure. The update system then refused to load and I was stuck on ‘checking for updates’ I consulted Zendesk and applied all their fixes, none of which worked. I have now had to uninstall and reinstall the sim twice before I finally managed to persuade it to start loading the 150Gb required. I live in the country and have a relatively slow Internet speed of 10 Mbps. Flightsim downloads often average less than 1 Mbps from their servers. 24 hours after starting the download I have achieved 24 GB and the download speed has reduced to 0.02Mbps.
I love this sim but hate the download system. If either Lockheed Martin or X plane were to introduce a better graphics system to match the current MSFS one I would be off like a shot. Had I been told before buying the Sim that it would be effectively off line for a week every month I would not have purchased it.
In the last two day’s the update is still stuck in a loop trying to download the base-bigfiles.fspatch, with just 3.38GB to go, despite restarting the process a couple of times still crashing around 7 or 8%. In my estimation usage time of MSFS 2020 is 5% flying 95% updating. Please fix this issue with the highest priority possible.
What further concerns me is that reportedly the next World Update will also include the next major release so it will undoubtedly be very large and therefore just how long will tis take to install?
What is the technical explanation to why your download is faster when you route you traffic through VPN? I don’t get it…
I am seeing the same thing my self. 20Mbps without VPN and 50 Mbps with VPN.
Still laughable slow compared to the capacity on my 1 gig fiber connection (and yes - it pretty much maxes out when downloading from other domains)
My VPN connects me to the best server that it chooses for me.
Download speed will be at the speed that servers load will permit and where that server is located and what connections it has to the Internet and the Microsoft Azure Cloud.
If I run FS2020 without the VPN. My download server will be whatever my Internet Service Provider (ISP) will deliver. (My case is Spectrum)
Also, I can choose the VPN far end server if I want to but I never do.
Whoever offers the best download speed wins if you can select it. My VPN allows me to select the far end server (Country and City) that I want.
I don’t know if or how my PC’s Network Card could be used to select the far end. I have to go through my ISP so I don’t think I could.
At long last base-bigfiles has down loaded alone with another 21 files now stuck on down loading fs-base-0.1.136.fspatch.001 for 15hours and just 1.9 GB to go this is just abismal and Microsoft should be ashamed with this sort of performance!
Over the weekend my download speed was below 1Mbps. On Monday morning it was over 10 Mbps until midday when it started to drop. Today its below 1Mbps.Only another 35 Gb to go, then I have to recalibrate all my controls and start downloading my additional aircraft and world scenery updates… When does the next update come out? Will I actually be able to fly for a few says before it is released.
Further to my last Post. I have spent two days trying to download the rest of the simulator, with no result at all.
The downloader is stuck on fs-base-cgl-0.1.21.fspackage.026
I checked my download folder, and the last successful downloaded folder was fs-base-cgl-0.1.21.fspackage.025.
Speedtest says that my download speed is between 10 and 18Mbps, but the sim download speed rarely gets above 1 Mbps and the download speed frequently drops to zero. On Monday I was able to download at over 10Mbps from Microsoft, but nothing since.
I have filed two Zendesk support requests, but so far no information on how to resolve this issue.
If anyone has any ideas that may help I would be very interested.
I have 580 Gib of available space on my hard disk.
the same for me. I have a 200 mbps connection but the download rate in FS 2020 is so slow and bad.
With such big updates and things from the marketplace, it just has to be fast and not at a speed of 10 years ago
In 2021 it can’t be that big issue for a world wide company named Microsoft with all your cloud servers, to give fast download rates / speed!
So can you please work on this asap because it is frustrating and demotivating to play a game that has to load updates for 5 hours.
the download speed for installation or update is very slow for people from EU.
I currently have to reinstall MSFS 2020. The download started 4 hours ago und until now I have only 50 GB out of 152,5 GB.
I have a 200 Mbs connection what works very well and the average download speed of MSFS 2020 is around 10 Mbs.
After a bit of research I found out that MSFS downloads all the files direct from a server in Redmond - USA (IP: 13.107.213.19).
As a company like Microsoft, why is there no download servers in EU? Why do we have to get all the data from Redmond if you have your own cloud in EU?
Please, provide the files also via EU servers so that we have full download speed!
It is a “pain in the ■■■” to wait hours and hours for only 152,5 GB and in the year 2021 this must be go much faster specialy if we talk about a company like Microsoft!!!
Well I’m in the UK and until a short while ago we were in the E.U.
I have a 300MB connection and downloaded it at over 200MBps at release last August.
During the updates I usually get over 100Mbps and that’s probably slow because I’m downloading it soon after release when many others are also hammering the servers at the same time.
The last update I was at work so downloaded it the next day and got over 180MBps so I don’t think it’s because the servers are in the USA.
For those who have problems downloading MSFS2020, pay attention to the version of MSFS2020 (eg Standatd, Deluxe or Premium Delux) you are downloading. Choose to download the purchased version, otherwise the download will result in loops, downloading very slow and stucks.
500/500 connection here and low 25-32 Mbps connection speeds here, these 60 gig plus updates make it impossible to play this game on short notice. MS needs to step up on the bandwidth allocated to the download servers …
EDIT: I’ve tried using VPN but have gotten inconclusive results…

PC Are you on Steam or Microsoft Store version?
MS Store version
This issue is not present on Steam version
Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?
no and no
Brief description of the issue:
i have a gigabit connection at home, my pc is connected via gigabit ethernet and I have standard speeds of 800+ mbits ps, but when im downloading msfs content updates my speed is 20mbitsps so about 2% of my bandwith.
Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:
PC specs and/or peripheral set up of relevant:
Gigabit Ethernet in my house, and optical connection to my house.
Verified with my ISP if there is any throttling on my account, but nothing like that is present. Also, issue can be replicated at any time when there is a download to make in the Sim, so it is not time-specific, or caused by my internet connection being fragmented.
Build Version # when you first started experiencing this issue:
1.21.13.0, previous version as well
Have you thought that may be every body else might be on a slow download and the servers are working at high capacity. I wouldn’t panic just give it a chance. No point starting every body off about the same thing.
Last update it took me 3 days to download the patch. During that time, there was no change in my dl speed. Microsoft has “infinite” servers, so no, i am going to complain about this. Also, first four patches this was never an issue for me. i was downloading at 600-800 and was happy. Now i am actually afraid to do anything with my OS in case i would need to download full 300GB again. That would kill me with 20mbits. as Rick would say: Its just sloppy craftsmanship
Are you on Steam or Microsoft Store version? Steam version.
Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it? Yes (DM on) no changes.
Brief description of the issue: I have a wired internet connection with up to 450 mbps (around 56 mb/s). 60GB games I download via steam usually take about 5 - 10 minutes to download. Though, whenever I download something from MSFS (updates, from the store or anything else from the game itself) it takes hours.
I did everything mentioned in the Slow download speed post (see below).
I only manage to get up to 30 to 40 mbps (which is not more than 10% of the downloadspeed I get from other downloads. Is there a fix I missed? Is this an issue on my end, or are the servers just laggy bc everyone is downloading SU7 at the same time? Is it possible to fix, and if yes: How?
Till SU6, I was getting 90 Mbps with the 300 Mbps ethernet connection. With SU7 it is 14 Mbps whereas Ookla speed test shows me a ping of 3 Ms and a download speed of 290 Mbps.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. I assume this has something to do with the way Windows manages download speed but I haven’t made any changes there.
I tried auttuninglevel=disable and it actually worsened it taking the speed down to 5 Mbps. Nothing seems to work and I am at a loss to understand what happened.
