F-18 a bit lacking

I am sure those reporting it doesn’t fly right have endless experience flying it in the Navy and know first hand.

Long time DCS Hornet driver, but enjoying the free Superbug all the same. Sure, there is lots of functionality missing, like an FCS page so that we could see and set pitch trim and AUW, and as someone else posted, a CSEL function. Otherwise, having fun blasting around the Mach Loop.

You can still see your pitch trim setting on the CHKLIST page in this version, just like in the Charlie.

Good to know, thanks. Between the Superbug, JF Hawk, and IFE Goshawk, loving the mil jets we are getting.

Has there been any more discussion anywhere about the outboard flaperons not deploying with the flaps? I dont think the Super Hornet FCS would ever configure the flaps as seen in the current implementation (outboard flaps up, inboard fully down).

Or the rudders not showing toe-in on the ground and low speeds?

I’d think these would be relatively easy to fix?

F-18 Hornet
I have managed to get the Landing Gear mapped on the TCS Airbus Quadrant + add-on.

BUT … it looks like you must have the Lever in the UP position when you enter the Challenges or it will not work, if you forget you can still get the gear down visually when you look outside the aircraft ( I can see the gear locked ) but when you try to land the Sim gives you the warnings " Landing Gear" " Landing Gear" and you fail the Challenge.

The Landing Gear settings seems different to all others, I presume it will be something to do with Carrier Landings and possible the Xbox.

The Airbrakes and Flaps work fine and I am struggling to get above 1.2million in the Challenge but it’s early days.

This video may help folk with the Nav systems.

I have only started flying this plane in VR a few days ago. Was having a lot of trouble with Airlink not wanting to work correctly and then with getting MSFS to work in VR again. Finally got it flying in VR and I have the same landing gear problem you noted, among others. I can’t get the image of the gear to raise to matter what method I use. But I have confirmed that the gear does go up, it just doesn’t LOOK like it is up.

Best I have reached is around 1.2 Mach. That is near the edge of the level flight envelope at 20,000 ft at maximum thrust.

great comment !

Like others have said here it is ‘free/included in the base price’ so you’re not going to get the level of fidelity you would see in DCS. The DCS F-18 is $80 for just the plane. It may get somewhere close over the years but I’m not expecting it to be rapid development without modders.

I didn´t even looked at this plane so far because I thought it´s another A-10 like bird with 90% of all cockpit instruments not functioning for some stupid arcade-flying around. But this topic made me curious and I have to admit - not bad at all what I see here but even very good, almost the good old Hornet cockpit I am used to in DCS but more modern:

The content on the MDF´s look different and more “stock” than in DCS, but the overall graphics quality and amount of details inside the cockpit is superb.

edit: How awesome this plane had been added by Asobo with one of the Flight Sim updates! That´s why it looks so good compared to other fighter jets.

While still lacking a lot, hopefully this will make it lack a little less… dimmed the nav lights and bleed through wings, replaced the taxi light white strobe (who looked at that and said “good to go”??) with orange night light, fixed the tail white light, and added the correct 3x red strobe in the tail. Hope you like it.

I don’t hold my breath they will add major functionality, it is a basic model in order to work with the Top Gun 2 DLC.

Mixers may add some things but don’t expect FLIR or displays to be like a DCS plane.

Wow, reading this thread I find a lot offended people about this plane. Just enjoy the plane

the taxi light white strobe (who looked at that and said “good to go”??)

Yeah, I think the Asobo folks misinterpreted what that was. I need to review the NATOPS, and someone who is current on the jet or has been on the boat more recently than I have should verify this, but if I remember correctly what this is supposed to be the Day ID Light (if you mean the one that’s on the bottom of the approach lights (red/yellow/green)).

What this is for is so that when aircraft are on final approach to the carrier the light gives an additional visual verification to the LSO or anyone else who is watching on the PLAT camera, etc., that the particular aircraft is a Rhino and not one of the “baby” Hornets, as they obviously present a similar visual presentation. This is important to make sure that the weight is set correctly for the arresting gear, and there is of course differences in the flight characteristics.

I can’t remember what the flash pattern is supposed to be, but I believe it’s only used during day Case I recoveries, so it only turns on if the gear are down and the light pinky switch on the throttle is off, and it is only on if you are weight-off-wheels.

Boeing did.

have you flown in MSFS much? What plane of theirs isn’t lacking? (honest question, not trying to be salty)

Right, but my point is that there are conditions under which the strobe is active. The Asobo version doesn’t meet those, they just added the strobe and called it good.

Now go to Flightsim.to and add the free Super Warrior mod for the F18.

I dont fly the F18. However there are tons of them in the game now. I get a escorts from KLAS 747 Departing to KSAN KLAX KSFO KSEA CYVR almost every departure. These guy are good. I wonder if they are cursing a strobe switch or a canopy or maybe a targeting radar is missing… but looks like like too me they are having a great time flying.

If I just download the main file is that all I need to do to get the carrier and everything or do I need to do a separate dl for that?

thanks for the suggestion btw
