F-35 by IndiaFoxtEcho - Audio Overhaul Sneak Peek No. 2!

Hi everyone!

I have spent the last month working on something truly special for the F-35 and fighter aircraft lovers out there. Using my own very high quality sound recordings of an F-35A and F-35C, I’ve put together one of the most prestigious fighter soundsets to-date.

For those who don’t know me, my name is Tyler and I operate a sound production studio - Echo 19 Audio! Up until roughly a year ago my work was strictly involved with DCS: World, offering free mods to the public with an amazing and growing community to back me up. Not only that, we are a group of aviation and audio nerds who love everything aviation! Now, our work has been featured in a number of projects in MSFS - such as the PA-30, MD-11 (engines only), F-86, Juice Goose, CH-47 and more!

To learn more, here’s a link-tree: https://linktr.ee/echo19audio

This sound pack will be included in an official update to the IndiaFoxtEcho F-35A/B/C within the coming weeks. I hope you all enjoy the newly refreshed audio.

Fly safe! :airplane:

Sounds amazing! I also love your work on the Sabre and Chinook.

It’s about time!

I’ll consider picking up the f35 once the update is out.

Sounds real… how about the internal sounds?

Also improved!

Don’t have anything for their MB.339 do you?

(This though sounds fantastic!)

I’m really close to being on the verge of buying the F-35 and these amazing sounds may just be what push me into doing that. As I rarely (if ever) use the showcase camera in this manner, is there any chance we can see (hear) a preview of the internal sounds as well soon?

Installed the new update and tried a couple of test flights. Really liking the new sounds. But… one question about the in-cockpit audio - what’s that rhythmic pulsing under the sound of the engine? I thought at first it was a Morse identifier, but de-tuning and re-tuning the nav radios didn’t have any effect. Is it some other kind of alarm? Pretty subtle if so… but just persistent enough to be annoying. Wondering if it’s the result of operator error - I haven’t flown the F-35 in a long time.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

Hey :waving_hand:

Sounds like an alarm to me. Can you post a small clip?

Is the update coming to marketplace today?

Alarm was my first thought, but it’s not distinctive like the other alarms. It’s a low-order pulse like a Morse identifier pitched higher than the engines.

I’ll try to record something later, but in the meantime you can hear it in this YouTube video. It kicks in at 1:26, during the interior startup sound sample.

Hope this helps you ID it.

Oh, this is the sound of the ECS.

Ah, got it! As long as it’s supposed to be there, that’s fine. I have to admit my first reaction was to find it really annoying and to try to get rid of it. But I’ll stop struggling with the nav radios now. I guess it’s a bit like the APU whine in the Chinook that some people complained about. I didn’t. If it’s real, it’s good. Same here.

Great soundset, by the way.

The release video is live! We are indeed noticing a few descrepencies with the Xbox version, so if you have any feedback please leave it here or at our discord.

We’ve also launched a t-shirt/merch store for this special occasion. If you could look, it would mean a lot to me and our team! Hope you enjoy.

I finally got to try the updated sound pack and I’m sorry to say that I’m not a fan of it. Sure, from external “airshow” camera angles it sounds incredibly good, but in the cockpit during actual gameplay it’s not doing it for me.

That constant beeping noise is incredibly distracting and sounds like a badly looping sound file. Trains make this sound as they are standing still at a station and the whole plane has this impression during flight. It’s silent inside, just a mild whoosh and the beeping, nothing more. The default external camera is not much better. The sound of the aircraft simply lacks the bass and energy that was present in the original sound set. It basically resembles a vacuum cleaner and an idling train now. Even engaging the afterburner doesn’t do much. Again, it’s powerful only from afar, but from the actual gameplay cameras it’s underwhelming to me.

I understand it’s been recorded from real aircraft and it’s realistic in this regard, but how it’s mixed and how it comes across through MSFS is not as effective in my opinion. And that repeating beep/whine sound induces headache. If I had the option of the two variants, I’d continue flying with the original sounds. This new set just doesn’t have that oomph.

After a couple more flights, I’m inclined to agree. Still willing to respect the authenticity. But in practice it’s hard to live with.

I greatly appreciate the honesty and feedback - after spending a lot of time with this it’s hard to read when folks aren’t happy with the authenticity, alas - we can’t please everyone, but we try!

Anyway; there are several changes coming down the pipe that will resolve almost all of the feedback given. Overall the interior sounds have more depth now, at the sacrifice of some engine noise - which is actually more realistic.

Here is a (growing, WIP) changelog so far:

  • Adjustment: wind noises at speed were increased, and new high-quality sounds added
  • Adjustment: G-Force related wind sounds
  • Adjustment: Internal ECS fan noise oscilation removed due to complaints, volume increased.
  • Adjustment: Tonality of afterburner sound changed slightly and volume increased.
  • Adjustment: Increased close proximity howl sound (blue note)
  • Adjustment: Decreased range of high pitch turbine noise on aft camera angles.
  • Adjustment/Fix: Further refined external idle/turbine noise for better and more consistently realistic flyby audio.
  • Fixed: switch sound reverb issue
  • Fixed: issue with AI mix bus control
  • Fixed: squeaky brake pedal volume

Really appreciate the quick response and the continued effort!

A personal observation based on a lot of years (actually a lot of decades) of simming - there’s a big burden on sound design because in a desktop sim, sounds have to stand in for physical sensations that the simulation can’t deliver - the felt power of the engine, vibrations, stresses on the airframe, etc. At times that calls for exaggeration, or for toning down some of the realism. Case in point - when I’m flying warbirds with big radials, I never use headphone simulations even if they’re an option. In a real airplane, of course I would - don’t want hearing loss. But in the sim, the engine sound is what gives the seat-of-the-pants feeling of being in the cockpit rather than at your desk. Exaggerated volume helps. So do creaks and groans, even if in real life you’d never take off in an airplane that sounded like that.

Equally, a persistent sound like the F-35 ECS is probably more noticeable in the sim than in the real aircraft, even at equal volume, because in the real aircraft you’ve got more to do and more to feel.

Short version - it’s not only about authenticity, it’s also about verisimilitude.

The A2A sound packages for FSX/P3D are a good example of how to get the sounds to deliver a “you are there” effect (the FS2020 Comanche might, too - I don’t own it).

Hope this helps shed some light. Offered by way of insight, not criticism.

This sounds (no pun intended) awesome and it looks to fix most of my initial gripes with the audio. Thank you for the continued support!
