Fatal Error during start up on new PC

I just finished a new PC build (mobo, psu, SSD storage, M.2, etc.). I downloaded and installed MSFS 2024 on the 1T M.2. When I started loading the sim it aborted due to TWO fatal errors: (1) “Couldn’t check device Shader Model. Error 0x6.” and (2) “Error initializing D3D12Renderer_Z.” I updated the Nvidia driver for my RTX 2070 graphics card I took from my old system and reinstalled MSFS 2024, but the errors repeated.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you move the SSD from the old system to the new one, or start with a fresh Windows install?

I’ve had too many problems trying the former with the office computers I manage.

When I updated my gaming computer hardware last October I made sure I had backups of all my software installers. I wrote down a list of eveything I had, then started with a fresh Windows install.

It took a while, but it saved me a lot of grief.
Don’t get me wrong - it’s possible to simply move a Windows drive to a new computer. But in my experience, there’s too many weird things that can go wrong.

Thank you for the information. I did move an SSD from my old system, but is entirely document storage. I installed WIN 10 on a new SSD. Could these particular fatal errors be caused by the old RTX 2070?

FWIW the problem does NOT occur when launching MSFS 2020.

Make sure to install all available Windows updates through Windows Update. It’s important to check for updates multiple times, especially after each restart, because some updates only appear once the previous ones are installed. Keep repeating the process until there are no more updates left.

Got it, Thanks!

Great, after you’ve gone through a few rounds of updates and restarts, try launching MSFS 2024 to see if it starts up properly. Let me know how it goes.

Well, Settings isn’t feeding me anymore updates so I assume I’m up to date. The bad news is that MSFS 2024 still aborts with those same error messages. A reinstall of the sim doesn’t help either. I am confused as to why only MSFS 2024 is affected.

Could you please attach a .txt file containing your DxDiag report in your reply? You can find instructions on how to generate the report in the link below:
https://support.cdprojektred.com/en/cyberpunk/pc/sp-technical/issue/637/how-to-create-a-dxdiag-report

Let me know if this worked.
DxDiag.txt (98.7 KB)

Thanks for attaching the DxDiag report.

Please prepare for a Windows reinstallation, but not using the version you currently have installed. I’ll provide detailed instructions shortly.

In the meantime, please make a backup of all important files - such as documents, photos and anything else you don’t want to lose.

Let me know once the backup is done.

TenP, thank you for your guidance and effort in helping me with this!
Keith

In the meantime, I’ve prepared for you the latest version of Windows 10 Home x64 version 22H2, build 19045.6036.
This is the most up-to-date version available, much newer than the one offered on Microsoft official website.

You can download it from the following link:

https://uupdump.net/download.php?id=71b45765-6a0e-4a84-9fab-039f85ad2c82&pack=en-us&edition=core

// On the uupdump page, make sure to check the option “Integrate .NET Framework 3.5” before proceeding.

Once you’re redirected to the uupdump.net page, click on “Create download package” to download the required files.

After that, please follow this tutorial:

https://www.elevenforum.com/t/uup-dump-download-windows-insider-iso.344

Make sure to follow the instructions starting from step 8.

The scripts will automatically download Windows along with the latest updates and convert it into an ISO file, which you can then burn to a flash drive.

You might be wondering - either you or someone else - whether this site is legit. Yes, absolutely.
Everything is downloaded directly from Microsoft servers, so it’s completely safe and trustworthy.

Once you have the ISO file ready, use a freeware Rufus to create a bootable flash drive with Windows.

https://rufus.ie/en/

After installing Windows, sign in to the Microsoft Store app and check for app updates.

Once that’s done, go to Windows Update and install all available updates. Repeat this process until there’s nothing left to update.

When everything is up to date, download, install and sign in to the Xbox app.

Next, go to the website of your motherboard manufacturer (ASUS) and download the necessary drivers for your specific model.

Important: do not download the chipset driver from the ASUS website. Instead, go to the official AMD website and download the latest chipset driver from there.
https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html

When you’re on the AMD website, click on “Chipsets”, then select “AM4”.

In the next step, you’ll need to choose the exact model of your motherboard - look for it in the list (for example, X570, B550 etc.)
Then click “Submit” and on the next page, select your OS version - in your case, choose Windows 10 64-bit Edition.

After that, you’ll see the latest available chipset drivers for download. Download the package, install it first and then restart your PC before installing any other drivers from the ASUS website.

After that, go ahead and install the remaining drivers from the ASUS site.

After installing the chipset and motherboard drivers and restarting your PC, go ahead and download the latest NVIDIA graphics driver for your GPU.

GeForce Game Ready Driver 576.88 | Windows 10 64-bit

During the NVIDIA driver installation select only the driver itself - do not install the NVIDIA app.

The NVIDIA app is currently buggy and unnecessary for basic driver functionality. Keeping it out will help avoid potential issues.

Once the installation is complete, restart PC.

After the restart, download and install the latest versions of the following components:

Install everything one by one and once you’re done, restart PC.

And finally - you can now go ahead and install MSFS 2024.

Very important: for the first launch, make sure to start the game from the Xbox app, not from the Start menu or desktop shortcut. This helps avoid potential activation or sync issues.

You’re welcome.
Did MSFS 2024 launch correctly?

I’m afraid I will need to postpone the Windows install until later today. The end of the three-day weekend greeted me with a Monday schedule resembling a pile bricks. I’m anxious to get started on the process. Stay tuned!

QUESTION RE UUP DUMP:
On the Selection Summary page in the Download Method area, “Download and convert to ISO” is preselected. Is that the correct one, or should I select “Download UUP Set” instead?

Exactly mate.
