Feedback from a real world private pilot

Ok, first of all, CONGRATULATIONS on achieving such a GORGEOUS simulator!

After digesting the game for a couple of days, I think I’m finally ready to give my feedback to the devs, for whatever my PPL in real life is worth

Here are my 2 cents!

A Wrong First Impression

When I played the game on Tuesday morning, I flew in a Caravan for about 20 minutes and I felt really disappointed. Even at the highest settings of realism (True To Life/Hard), my experience was that the game felt really…dumbed down. Starting from turning on the engine and the airplane systems. The checklist for the Caravan C208B seems extremely simplified. No “Ignition on, watch the Oil Pressure rise, watch the fuel flow indication, watch ITT stabilize, THEN conditioner lever low idle, watch ITT on the Green, NG min 50%, etc”. The camera controls seemed so obviously designed for an Xbox controller and the game in general…

Just felt like Microsoft was looking to nail the sale with the general public, but letting down the IRL pilots looking to stay sharp, or the hardcore sim enthusiast who maybe can’t afford a career in the skies, but want to learn the most realistic way possible.
I was already trash-talking the game in some discords and found other people that felt the same way about it. I thought I had picked sides on the fight of whether you love or hate the game.

A SECOND CHANCE, FALLING IN LOVE

Later that day, I decided to give it a second chance while streaming on my Twitch channel, and a friend who is also a real-world pilot AND also a BETA TESTER for early FS2020 helped me see the game with different eyes…
Turns out ALL the piston single-engine planes work WONDERFULLY. Not only do they look beautiful but feel pretty realistic and accurate! and it’s such a delight to fly them.

The smoothness you experience in the air when trimming the plane correctly is one great example, in XPlane11 letting go of the controls, without autopilot engaged, would most likely result in catastrophe. This is not how it feels IRL, I’ll never forget the day my ballsy instructor made me stall my 172 and showed me how the plane actually DOES recover itself from nose-diving to straight and level flight because of the beautiful aerodynamics. FS2020 gets REALLY close to that.

Switching my airport to one in a more famous location instead of my 3rd world country (lol no hard feelings there) showed me for the 1st time what the graphics of the game REALLY look like! AND then, when I was beginning to fall in love with the game… BOOM landing challenge in the French Alps at sunset with low clouds and mist over a valley.

W.O.W w h a t a B E A U T Y! :black_heart:

FINAL THOUGHTS

The game does feel like it makes you go the extra mile if you really want realism high enough to practice for real-world flying and keeping you skills sharp. However, it’s worth it doing those extra little things in order to stay flying in this beautiful world, instead of going back to your old sim.

Here are a few things I believe need to be fixed or improved ASAP.

  • Checklists: Come on guys, EZ fix! look at the checklist of FSX (yes, the 2009 Flight Simulator) realistic all the way! Wanna keep the general public you captured by making the game more accessible? Sure! why not? Make the checklist change when selecting your level of difficulty for the game.

  • G1000 And the instruments in general: Some pilots I’ve talked to don’t like the G1000 in this game. I haven’t asked particularly why but I have noticed it’s also kinda simplified, missing some buttons and options, AND changing the COMMS frequency manually is A PAIN IN THE BUTT! can’t seem to hover over the knob for more than a millisecond before it accidentally moves to the toggle cursor.

Would be nice if you could implement the function from (yes… you saw it coming) XPlane11 where you can click on an instrument and it pops up a 2D bigger version of that instrument or screen so you can click on it without worrying about messing up or zooming in. What a comfortable feature!

  • CAMERA VIEWS: The new feature that “switches you” between sections of instruments and parts of the cockpit is SO COOL once you get used to it! However, I wish you didn’t have to sacrifice the traditional free look we’re used to. it is so comfortable.

You know, that little joystick in your flight stick? What people call a “thumb hat” or “POV hat”. That’s for moving the camera around freely! Again, I love the new feature of switching between parts of the cockpit, but it would be cool if we could configure that function to the arrows on the keyboard, or even W,A,S,D. and set the free look to that part of the flight stick that is designed for it!

Since I’ve been learning how to use the G1000 based on XPlane videos, getting the FS2020 avionics upto XPlane levels of functionality is something I’m looking forward to/hoping for.

Twirling the knobs on this device is tricky, to be sure. Maybe something like a ‘hold mouse button while using scroll wheel to twist knob up/down’ feature?

Still getting to grips with cameras.

I slowly learned this as well. The Caravan is one of my favorite aircraft of all time and it’s extremely simplified even with True to Life settings. Holding a CPL, I was hoping the private jets would be up to scratch but they aren’t quite there yet. The single engines are, as you said, wonderful to fly and feel much more true to life than the jets or multi’s (barring the G58 as it feels OK). I’m really excited however for what this platform will offer in terms of its SDK for developers enabling beautiful third party addons.

You can certainly re-map the POV hat to pan all over the cockpit. It takes a bit of digging, but I finally managed it and it really makes changing views a pleasure. You have to clear the POV current settings and then assign look left, look right, etc to the appropriate movement. Just like Xplane and P3d.
I also remapped the nmberpad to have instant left view on num 4 and right view on num pad 6, just like I have it in XPlane as well. You create a new profile and that allows you go back to the default.
I can give more details if necessary.

Glad you gave a second change. Thats what most complainers should do, just give some time and try. It takes a little bit time to get used to. And, this is only the beginning. It only gets better with time. There are a lot things to fix, but already it gives such amazing feelings.

This is a BRILLIANT idea!

I’ve given this thing third and forth chances, on my fifth as I write this but am now switching back to FSX. I’m not convinced with IRL feel. Rudders are extremely way too sensitive, despite the settings I’ve tried. Rudder trim? ugh, awful, one click and I was doing a barrel roll. I really wish I could see it from your perspective. The eye candy is the only good part… Everything else is a total let down, but again, I wish someone would change my point of view… :sad_but_relieved_face:

I would LOVE a step by step on how to do this!
If you have the time

Indeed! haha seems like we were on the same boat, I hope to become a skydive pilot when I get my CPL so the Caravan is on top of my list of favorites as well and it’s the first plane I tried too

That could work!!

Hello real life pilot, I have a question. So I tried to take off at Ambri Airport(LSPM) in Switzerland on a Cessna 172 and I the plane couldn’t get over the mountains. (Clear skies/4pm)

It kept stalling and at one point I had to land on grass because the plane could not pull up anymore even though my AOA is at green at full power!

Is this because of the terrain? Or is it a bug in the game? I’m so confused

Twirling the knobs on this device is tricky, to be sure. Maybe something like a ‘hold mouse button while using scroll wheel to twist knob up/down’ feature?

Oh yes!

But then again, in FSX you could just type from the keyboard.

Switzerland sounds high altitude! What was the altitude of the airport and at what speed did you pull up for take off?

What was your altitude and what was the temperature. Sounds like a density altitude issue. Google density altitude and you will get a slew of info on it. Not a bug…just a real life situation.

The avionics definitely need improvement, both in GA and Commercial airlines. Graphically, it looks fantastic, flying around Boston was fantastic! I do agree that the interface for handling the glass cockpits are clunky…I too much prefer how X-Plane 11 handles this.

Hi Sixty, would love the step by step on the POV also if you could sent me.

Thks.

It was around 6000ft. I started to take off at around 60-70 kts. I was able to fly for around 3-5 minutes, but as I get closer to some mountains, I could’t go past 7000ft and my speed was dropping!

The altitude was around 6000ft. I was thinking the same too, that it’s something about the atmosphere in that area.

It affected the G1000 a lot. I tried to fly with the smaller Cessna and the Savage Cub and it was better, although the speed was also not that fast and it was more difficult to climb

I just watched a video about Density Altitude, it literally looks like the thing that happened to me! This is gotta be it!!

Not only does the altitude matter…and 6,000 ft is pretty high…but the temp matters as well. Basically, the higher you are and the warmer it is, the less power your plane is going to produce…in a piston plane. Also, as you go up in altitude, you have to lean the fuel mixture…so you have to start out with the mixture lever pulled back…and as you climb you have to continually pulling the mixture back slightly. This will also make your ground roll at take off alot longer than it normally would be. Here is a good article to read up on density altitude and how to calculate it. https://www.flyingmag.com/technique/tip-week/calculating-density-altitude-pencil/
