I’m expecting the Q2 to be delivered today and was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for a first flight in VR? Looking for a short hop in the 172 that really showcases the VR effects.
(yes, I realize I’ll likely have to do a lot of tweaking before I get things setup adequately especially on my system :))
It’ll be a bit of a challenge with the relatively low power of the C172, but it should be doable and it will certainly make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
I think one thing you need to be prepared for is just how much motion sickness you might suffer from. Be prepared to take things slowly and build up. Its a very immersive experience. I don’t suffer from any motion sickness at all now but I certainly did early on. My advice is don’t fly one of the smaller aircraft to begin with. I found much easier to learn how to fly in VR in one of the medium sized turbo props.
Aerobatics in the Extra is a great way to induce motion sickness. I have a hard enough time flying that on a monitor
My first VR flight was in the TBM and once I had sorted the positioning of my “head” in the cockpit it was very enjoyable.
Mostly do all my VR flying in the Savage Cub (and Savage Carbon or Savage Grravel) now. Great for sightseeing and landing away from airfields (quick way to give yourself a rest while flying VR and excellent practice). Also great for flying down avenues of Manhattan at 3rd floor level if that is your bag.
Best thing I did was to get it dialled all in by flying around the Lake District, UK, in clear skies, lots of practise landings and take-offs in the “bush” and slowly built up to live weather/dusk/night flying. Then progressed to transits across the Alps, Alaska etc.
Easiest way to induce motion sickness? Look out the side window and do a sudden diving hard turn. Gip
I don’t get any motion sickness at all now but I sure did to begin with. I’ve just been zipping over the snow covered Scottish highlands in a Euro Fighter Typhoon at 750 knots and my stomach didn’t turn once. The weirdest reaction I get is that if I do a steep climb in a fast jet I can feel my ears try and pop. Its an odd reaction and testament to how immersive it is in VR that my mind is so fooled like that.
I have tried every trick out there and all i can get out of VR is very blury sim studdering. The worst vr experience i have ever had. So i dont know how everyone is even using VR to fly. I bought a reverb G2 just for this. I have a 2080Ti and a 9700k processor there is no reason i should not be able to get this to work half way decently. I just dont understand how some people are having a good experience with VR as it is now.
Turns around a point at Monument Valley! Yeah, it’ll jack you up, but it’s sooo worth it. Would highly recommend for one of your first VR flights. Tune your settings and computer first though to avoid some of the chop and judder.
Its interesting that certain areas really lend themselves to VR. I love taking off from an airport in a town called Sion in the heart of the Swiss alps and flying around the mountains there. Flying around high mountains gives you so much more of a sense of scale and depth to the environment. Now I just wish Asobo would sort out the glitch that creates all the spikes and deformities in the landscape. Its like flying around in Lord of the Rings sometimes at the moment.
Motion sickness is very common with VR but particularly with VR in flight simulators. The problem is your eyes are telling you everything is moving but every other sense is telling you you’re sitting still. Your senses are all just a bit confused. Its interesting that you quickly get used to it though. Your mind very quickly adapts to this new sensory experience.
Thanks all for all the great feedback. I got everything setup and flew the areas you all recommended below. It’s a blast (minus the blurry instrument panel). Longest flight was probably around an hour or so and I didn’t experience any motion sickness (phew), though a couple of times in mountains terrain and sharper bank angles I could definitely feel an odd sensation (nothing too bad though).
Thanks again and if anyone has any recos to make the panel less blurry I’m all ears!
