First world problem: Hawk or Vulcan?

The Just Flight Vulcan and BAE Hawk are both on sale in the MS store. I can’t decide between them. If you had to choose one, which would it be and why?

Take the Vulcan - it’s one of a kind both in looks, sound and feel. The Hawk is good but not that different from other Cold War light jet options.

Take the Hawk. More fun to fly and more versatile.

I own both, they are both great, but I rarely fly the Vulcan.

@MucusTech I agree with @Jigsaw407 that the Hawk is more versatile. But that is because I prefer small(er) aircraft and the Hawk is more useful than the Vulcan for the “virtual tourism” I enjoy.

However, (for me) the Vulcan is still a hell of a lot of fun to fly, and I enjoy challenge of trying to do the same thing in the Vulcan that I do in the Hawk (emphasis on “trying”). For example: emulating cgaviator’s and Into the Blue’s Mach Loop runs (see: https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/uTxxXv9XhbM and https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/nKl3ZpgqgiI

In short, if you prefer smaller, more nimble aircraft, go for the Hawk first. If you prefer larger aircraft, go for the Vulcan first. But then start saving for which ever one you did not purchase because @NORTMAR and the Just Flight team made a great pair.

Cheers!

I agree with what has been said already - you would use the Hawk a lot more.

Two very different experiences. The Vulcan is brilliant - lots of atmosphere, one of the best soundsets in the sim. But it’s procedurally very complex. Also, cockpit visibility isn’t great. I love it but don’t fly it often. The Hawk is more accessible - but with enough steps and procedures to make it authentic and distinctive. The latest build solves some flight model problems - it’s a pleasure to hand fly, though challenging as a trainer should be.

At the end of the day it comes down to your tastes - which one do you think you’d get more out if?

As others have said I’d go for the Hawk. Although the Vulcan is great I very rarely fly in it

What sort of flights do you guys do in the Hawk? I always love how it looks so much, but as an airliner/GA guys I can’t think of how I would use it. My life is pretty simple: I rotate the iFly 737, the Fenix A32X, the PMDG 777 and the A2A Comanche for low sightseeing. That’s 98% of my flying. I don’t have any military knowledge (but it does look really cool).

I just pretend this is a privately owned trainer jet that I use like any other GA aircraft for (faster) sightseeing and cross country flights. It’s also great fun to throw around valleys at low altitude and high speed, weaving around hills and trees.

And it has a nice smoke feature for some airshow aerobatics.

I have both - and hard to choose between as they’re both magnificent.

If I had to chose one I would probably say the Hawk. As others have said, it offers a great view for some scenic flying. Nice range of liveries too.

…take the Hawk to the Mach Loop - that‘s where it is meant to be flown!

If you want a challenge, try following CGAviator’s (YouTube) navigation tutorials. Everything has to be planned well, leg times, bearings and fuel and try to hit your marks.

To even it out a bit, here are some Vulcan shots. It’s an impressive machine and fun to fly as well, but very heavy on the controls and with very little pitch down authority. You might think the controls are broken at first, but that’s how it is in the real thing.

One of these is not like the others …

To be fair, Avro did briefly toy with the idea of a airliner based on the Vulcan, allegedly. I’m not sure how that would/could have worked out, other than ending up similar to Concorde once sized up and given better versions of the Olympus.

Have the Vulcan, bought it on launch and have only flown it 3 times. Every time was a blast but need to be in a certain mood for it.
Bought the Hawk this weekend. Another blast to fly! Need to get used to the trimming but did good in the Mach Loop test.
That being said, both are fantastic products. Just depends on what type of flight mission you prefer to do.

Thanks for the input everyone. It seems the Hawk just has the edge in popularity, but probably because people seem to enjoy the style of flying one does in the Hawk over what one might do in the Vulcan. This is what makes it hard for me - sometimes I love the no-flight-plan zooming an aerobatics the Hawk lends itself to and other times I like the big heavy planes that require more flying by the numbers. This is why I love flying both the Spitfire and the Chinook helicopter. It does depend on mood. Maybe the answer is to get both!

Not “maybe”. For sure! It should only be a question of which one to get first.

Get the Hawk. It’s great. But then there’s the Vulcan… And you can’t not have the mighty Vulcan. So there is no other choice but to get both

OK. I ended up getting both.
