Fix For (some) CTD issues

This is a fix for some CTD issues. If you are struggling with CTD’s and have run out of ideas this may be for you. Personally I would not rely on a future patch to resolve all CTD’s.

My intention was to pretty much start over with 2024 so I was not worried about losing progress or settings.

THE BELOW FIX WILL WIPE SETTINGS AND PROGRESS - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Backstory
CTD’s started for me specifically with the default 172 (glass) and after messing around with controller configs (while the 172 was loaded). I suspect a software bug caused a corruption to a controller config for the 172 which caused the sim to CTD whenever I selected the 172 thereafter.

As I tried to resolve the problem (repair & reset of the MSFS 2024 app) the problem escalated. CTD’s became persistent and occurred during loading when reaching the screen where you select Accessibility options or Start

I concluded my cloud profile/data had become corrupt as repairing/resetting the MSFS 2024 app or reinstalling the sim alone did not fix the issue. This is why I do not think a future patch will definitely fix everyone’d CTD’s.

THE FIX…

I listed this in the order I would likely follow if I were to do this again. Not all of these steps may actually be necessary - but I was not messing around anymore!
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING - This process is intended to to start afresh with MSFS-2024 and it DOES wipe your progress and settings.

Windows 10
(you may need to Google for differences if you have WIndows 11)

  1. Repair and Reset the MSFS app…
    Settings > Apps >
Scroll down and find Microsoft Flight simulator 2024

Click on Advance options.
Select Repair - this only take a moment.
Select Reset - takes slightly longer, but not long.
This I believe removes/resets some local data.

  1. Next, I would suggest actually uninstalling the sim entirely. You can do this on the same screen as the last screen shot. Once you have done this, check folders where MSFS 2024 data was being stored and make sure it’s gone.
  2. The next step (and for me what stopped the CTD’s) is to delete profile/data stored on the cloud.
To do this open a Command Prompt and run as administrator.
Enter the below command (it is all on one line) and hit return…

start shell:appsFolder\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App -DeleteCloudSaves

At this point I would suggest rebooting you PC for good measure if you have not done so already.

Once you dont the above, you are ready to install MSFS 2024 again…

  1. I created a folder on another drive specifically labelled for MSFS-2024 as my install location.
  2. Open up the Xbox app got to setting, install locations and select folder you created (if you are following this step).
  3. Close the settings, find MSFS 2024 in the Xbox App then install it.

All going well once the sim has gone through the package activation and initial set-up again the sim should run and hopefully! without CTD’ing. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who tries this. I hope it helps and gets you running MSFS 2024 without the CTD’s!

If anyone does try this it would be useful for other users if you can report back on to the following…

  1. Did this work for you?
  2. When and/or under what circumstances were or are you experiencing CTD’s?

If this helps out even one other user this will be time well spent! :sunglasses:

Feedback useful before I try all this - thanks

Under what circumstances are you experiencing CTDs?

Every start - less than 1 minute in menus. Win 11 does not have a modify or repair option for this App and the shell command says cannot find folder even though there is one. Perhaps if I delete it manually. I had one brief flight last Friday and nothing since. Have manually deleted the Limitless folder all that I can see is some Nvidia NVBackend folders - should I delete those before re install I wonder. Appreciate the help.

Just to be clear the command I posted to delete cloud based data should be entered via a Command prompt (type cmd in the windows search bar).

Yes did that but for my Steam install the command fails and not found. Followed another advice to wipe cloud saves and reinstalled without saved data and still crashes so looks like it is never going to run on my PC

Sorry to hear that. :frowning:
