Fix the UI - unnecessary eye-candy, arcade-feel, form over function, annoying - MSFS 2024

If you think this UI suits PC any good, try using a mouse and keyboard to navigate the menu, Xbox has support for that, doesn’t it? Well may be try 2020 menu first if you have it. You will understand what a step back the 2024 UI experience is.

A bug is a part of code that doesn‘t work as intended, what we have here is simply bad design. It DOES work after all. It‘s just bad.

Could this at least be grouped with the other related posts and tagged as feedback-logged or bug-logged, considering the number of votes?

Thanks

This is, I admit, a very personal pet peeve of mine, but here goes: please don’t use the term arcade if you have had no experience with actual arcade games.

Arcade games never even had menus, fer Pete’s sake. It makes you look unknowledgeable and horribly out of touch.

PS: I just noticed I have already criticised this request ITT. I stand by both my comments, word by word.

Look, I don’t have a problem with loading screens, videos playing etc. I’m not looking for the sim to shout out “aren’t my screens basic, I must be serious software.” They need to keep up with modern aspects of games if they are to remain current and relevant for newcomers.

I do take issue if these slow down the load significantly. Without being able to compare a load with a single static image vs the current process I simply have no idea. Maybe Asobo do, and possibly they’ve considered it isn’t an issue for loading times.

General UI/menus
My experience on Xbox x is I generally dislike it. For I don’t know how many months (I’m on beta) the loading of the main menu is laggy.
Zooming in on the world to an airport is almost always laggy, often I have to wait 5 or so seconds having zoomed in a degree before I can zoom further. It really is unpleasant.

Clicking on an aircraft is generally slow, then livery selection: await redrawing the aircraft. A couple of seconds to confirm and back to the menu. I don’t know how but the aircraft selection and options could be more user friendly. As a guide, as said before MSFS 2020 seemed fine. I’m not stuck in the past, I just find airport selection, aircraft selection, painful.

trying to find the one livery I have installed. Which variant, engine, winglet etc… I can’t just search for the airline (returns no result). The UI should be just like P3d… dropdown menues and searchable text.

However, those are designed for a mouse and keyboard, while MSFS is designed to work with an Xbox controller. And no matter how much PC pilots might dislike that, it will never change. As publishers, that makes us very happy, as it is a huge part of what you can sell, and these days the product does not have to be simplified in any way.

The trouble is that the 2024 UI is really clunky with an Xbox controller. The cursor in 2020 made it nice and easy to navigate in the way that you would with a mouse but they got rid of that for 2024 and now you need to press buttons to switch between different menus and options and some parts are all but inaccessible without a mouse. I don’t know how people without a mouse use it as it’s horrible

Disagree with OP. It’s just a game. Admit to yourself you’re playing a game. Have some fun.

Not only that it degrades framerates, and constantly glitchy, especially the accordion sliders. I’d love interface as simple and straight forward as the Dev Interface. The current GUI is simply cumbersome!

So was fs2020, but that ui is ten times better than fs2024. I just can’t understand how they thought what they created was acceptable, and it seems Jorg agrees. In the last livestream he said that he tried to use the marketplace in 2024 and it was a complete disaster and has handed it over to the ui/ux designers at Microsoft, so there is hope yet! :crossed_fingers:

One of my big frustrations is the relocation of VR graphics settings, it used to replace the 2D graphics settings depending on the mode you were in. Now it is a few clicks away, and being used to FS2020, I find my self changing 2D graphics settings constantly by mistake. The question is why, I just don’t get the logic behind some of these changes.

And pressing ESC while in VR causes a puke fest with this zooming in and out effect.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but one of the most annoying things for me is the awful filters for the planes. How can they regress it so hard, we had filters for prop planes, jets etc. in 2020. Now an airliner and a Cessna are in the same category??

I would’ve expected ADDITIONAL, more granular filters. Like say, sort by cruise speed. Sort by weight. Only show twin props, etc.

But I’d be happy if we simply had the FS2020 filters lol. The UI 100% feels like no one who actually uses the product for any amount of time had any input whatsoever.

I completely agree. I can almost forgive all the bugs considering the enormous complexity of simulating hundreds of airplanes on millions of different systems, but it’s the weird ui choices I can’t get my head around, it’s like they created a placeholder ui for testing, but then never got around to creating the real one.

When are devs at Asobo going to rework the UI to where it is not “simple”. Your streamlining of the UI is like it was build for 5 year old and it is a total PITA to navigate for anyone that actually plays the game as a simulator not someone who gives an xbox controller to their 8 yo so he can pick a pretty deluxe edition plane and fly around in arcade mode.

I want to be able to boot into the game, skip the beginning screens and load right into the free flight page and see my Fenix, A2A, PMDG, black square etc that I last loaded into. I don’t like having to be blasted every time with a mountain of pretty default planes.

All you have to do is give us a setting to change, call it sim mode, and keep the current one as arcade or xbox mode.

WHY IS THE CONTROL UI SO BAD?

Please someone from Asobo explain how you managed to look at 2020 and say “you know what 2024 needs? A worse user interface!” I can’t see any controls and mapping controls is a pain.

As a side note, it feels like this should have never been released and should have at most been released as a beta. Because you sold an unfinished product, you do not really any incentive to actually fix anything because you have already fish hooked everyone via Xbox with the pretty graphics.

It feels like this game is a product of bad management that doesn’t listen to their actual customer base and only care about how many dollars they can squeeze out of xbox users. You also let scammers on the marketplace selling BS products.

Edit 1:

Oh, the ability to see our favorite airports would also be nice, but you have to zoom into the map to be able to see anything. It would be nice to filter airports but nope. Again UI issue that would not take much to fix but Asobo clearly doesn’t care.

I like the sim for the most part. It’s just mind boggling how the simple things just get left alone and add up and people mention them yet they don’t get fixed. It’s the little things that add up.

I think a click of FS2024 on my Taskbar and then, when it displays, to click
“Start” and then click “Free Flight” is not to terrible.

Of course, if one click was an option, I would click it.

Control UI
Simmers mostly enjoy self figuring out, self teaching, and self analyzing
a simulator. And use this site for help & education.

Most simmers come with a fair amount of experience.
New Simmers have to learn.

Gamers want to push a button and fly a 737.
FS2020/2024 is not for Gamers

MS Flight Simulator is a complex beast.

Just a heads up, the current UI is an abysmal nightmare to navigate with an Xbox controller, so this was in no way, shape, or form designed with that intention. If it was, then yikes.

This topic was discussed in the last Developer Stream and, as per Jörg’s statement, work is in progress !

It would be nice if we had a way to track and follow up on the progress, as there is currently no feedback logged!
