But there is the example of Cyberbug, I mean, Cyberpunk. Just a game with some of the worst launch issues I’ve seen, and which has been heavily criticized.
Here, the community has been giving feedback for 6 month since release. But at this point is really difficult to give it, because the core issue is still the same.
I agree in principle, but my over-40 years – you read that right, since 1978 – of experience making my living in software development has taught me that money, underestimation, and mistakes trumps everything. To make software, you have to first stay in business. And big business NEVER allows you to take as much time as you need, test as much as you like, or work on the most unprofitable thing rather than the thing that will make you the most profit.
I have more than a few times in my career been surprised by seeing how fragile some significant code is. Some code that literally controls the fate of people’s lives is so bad that I wish I didn’t know about it. There is a term I hate in the software industry – “organically grown”. What that means is that the original code base has been hacked again and again to add features rather than designed and developed from scratch. That is exactly what Asobo is dealing with. The FSX code base has been adopted and hacked (organically grown) because of business forces (MS chasing money) . What we have right now is very, very predictable. And trust me on this because I’ve been part of it and have had an extremely large number of people on my development teams – Asobo (plus Jorg) is full of people who wish their priorities and efforts were fully directed toward making the best flight sim they could
But that’s not the realities of business or life in general. Personally, I’m grateful for – and frustrated with – the quality of sim we have at this moment. Based on my knowledge and experience, I feel it in my bones that it’s going to get better and better for a long time to come. Forget entitlement and instant gratification. Just be patient, positive, and constructive in your criticisms. It’s going to be LEGENDARY, and we’re all part of it!!!
If they keep up this abysmal quality control, MSFS will the next Cyperpunk on Xbox. Gamers aren’t as dedicated to the success of this hobby/game as we are. They’ll just trash it online.
I also made changes to the target_performance.cfg of the Cessna Citation Longitud, I changed the full_flap_max_lift_coef and it takes off fine. Asobo let you change some .cfg files for what I can tell. In the Premium planes, the .cfg files are a bit different as far name and location.
I feel exactly the same, MSFS is on the verge of achieving greatness, the last few weeks, everytime I flew I could feel the potential it has and just how different it is to any other sim right now.
That being said, things like the recent update, the way this bug has been handled and the innumerable instrumentation issues and CTDs makes me think that to actually achieve greatness it’s going to take a lot more time.
I hope this type of issues start going down and development can concentrate on actually making this the best consumer flight simulator out there.
I am a software developer myself, and I fully understand the points you are making regarding money / underestimation / trade offs / code quality. Also, I have been a real life pilot (incl. commercial pilot) and have been flight simming since its early days. I have a pretty good understanding of all these fields coming together (aviation, software, simulators).
Not my experience, but something recently came across the the book I’ll Take the 18 by Gloodt. about flying freight in Beech 18s around the Great Lakes in the 1980s. Different world back then. You might want to read this book. It’s quite interesting.
======================
Anyway, back on topic…
So I’ve been flying the Caravan a lot (have one leased in the FSE world) and it’s still as mentioned above. Sure, it’s broken but it’s more an annoyance than a deal-breaker because it’s pretty easy to work around. I have now also flown the X-Cub and Extra 300.
Extra 300:
Doesn’t have flaps so seems unchanged.
X-Cub:
Hmmm… Definitely changed and broken, but actually in a fun way you can enjoy and exploit until it gets fixed. It’s incredibly STOL now
Takeoffs: The manufacturer recommends using full flaps in real life so that’s what I’ve been doing in the game. Worked great. But now, doing this results in the plane becoming airborne before the ASI comes to life, so I’m guessing about 30 knots. And it will climb this way, and you can gradually accelerate and work the flaps up no problem, with the stall horn going off constantly. It’s crazy ;).
Moving Flaps: The X-Cub does NOT have the extreme pitch response Caravan when raising and lowering flaps. In fact, even now, there’s hardly any pitch change at all. This is what makes it safe to exploit the ridiculous full-flaps takeoff :).
Delayed Acceleration: Once you retract the flaps, it’s like their drag effect lingers on for 10-15 seconds. The plane just won’t accelerate at all in level flight, staying right at the top of the white arc. But eventually, off she goes as normal.
Landing: As with takeoffs, with full flaps, you now can make controlled landings right down to below where the ASI stops working (30-ish knots), then stomp the brakes and have a ground roll of only about 1.5 plane lengths. It’s a good idea to retract at least 1 notch of flaps as you touch down, so that when you pull full back to keep the take stuck down, you won’t lift off again :).
So anyway, the X-Cub is now SUPER=STOL, capable of landing the roofs of large buildings almost like a helicopter (more like an autogyro I guess). So get out there and do all your stupid STOL tricks now, before they fix it
There is a saying in the software industry, You don’t develop anything in QA.
Software engineering (technical) and software development (business) are very, very complicated subject and those who aren’t experts cannot even begin to understand what they don’t even know they don’t understand. And all the professional developers in the forum – if pressed – will probably admit that at least several times in their career they have hated decisions that were forced on them by project management. They will also reluctantly admit that they have released code that they felt was premature and had to live with it. Personally, I have never, ever been satisfied with ANY code I released. I ALWAYS felt that I could do better if given more time.
Quality Control is only about testing. And QC is only as good as your test cases, the time you’re given to do testing, and your personal expertise in the testing area if you aren’t given expert test cases. I highly doubt they have real pilots – and maybe not expert sim pilots – in QC. They certainly don’t have aeronautical engineers in there.
Speaking as a real world pilot and an an expert simmer, I’m just as frustrated as all of you at the state of the sim. I’m not apologizing for Asobo, either. I just understand the big picture better than many here, and I can see how we got here. I can also see how it will probably play out in the next year, and I personally feel pretty positive.
I recommend that you fully embrace the pain, but take notes. This is going to be a great sim within a year or two. Just as those posters who fondly talk about Bruce Artwick, Sublogic, and the original MS Flight Simulator back in the early 1980’s, I guarantee that 40 years from now you’ll either be dead or boring your friends with stories about the first MS Flight Simulator that mapped the WHOLE WORLD so good you could fly your plane manually close to the ground and SEE YOUR HOUSE! You’re part of a historic event. Live it to the fullest!
I was trying to see if you can actually made a change in the so called Premium planes, the mod was small, and had no impact in the behavior of the plane, I was expecting some kind of notice that I could not write to this file, after landing , I restore the original value. Relax
They didn’t mess with the flaps intentionally, it’s a bug due to parts of upcoming improvements being included accidentally in this update causing flaps to be 2x as effective. With the rest of the upcoming improvements it wouldn’t have this issue, but standalone it does.
What? Do I have anything to publicly say to you now that Asobo has confirmed what I was alluding to in my post that you disagreed with? No, why should I? I’ve said all that I need to say. I see no reason to add to the so-called dumpster fire. I was simply trying to quell some of the flames by dealing in facts rather than conjecture or hyperbole.
I think it s a misunderstanding, I have not said or reported anything as offensive, I was merely reporting my actions with some files, I am very sorry if I press maybe the wrong key, my apologies
I think it was the “Relax” comment that was misunderstood. I’m an American, and when I read that, I understood it to mean “Dude, you are too sensitive and are overreacting. Calm down and get over yourself!”
It may be a language / idiom thing, but most Americans will react badly to being told, “Relax”.
From your other posts, I don’t think you meant any disrespect. And I’m sorry if this post offends you in any way. I’m just trying to help!
