Flight from Kiev (UKBB) to (UMGG), via Chernobyl

I thought I’d take a look at the Chernobyl NPP last night, and along the way saw a rather odd structure. This was slightly South of the NPP.

When I got the NPP itself, I couldn’t resist landing on its roof.

It looks like some form of dome, or rather arch, is there, but is swallowed up by the building around it.

Interestingly, little details were captured, like the blue building that leads up to one of the entrances to the site. Overall, the imagery is quite old, I think, but it was nice to visit all the same.

I guess the hill is a bug in the height map data. And yep, looks quite old. The sarcophagus looks to be still under construction in the game.

Pripyat is recognizable as well, but would be nice to have a model of the iconic ferris wheel.

I had a look on both Google, as well as Bing, and they both show the arched sarcophagus, but it not in place over Reactor 4.

The icon cooling tower is also not shown. What I was surprised about, was that there is quite a bit of street view level footage available.

It looks like a special company was hired to get up close, and personal, with the beast itself!

This was as close as even these guys got. No more footage past this point. Reactor 4 is on the other side of that blue building, obscured by the trees to the right of it.

Yes, I remember an interpretation of that from STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. It was the Brain Scorcher.

Ooh. I’m currently about to fly Moscow to Kiev via UMGG so will bypass to Chernobyl. Good call!
