Flight Plans With GPS

Good evening forum,

Just bumping up to the 172 Steam with the Garmin 530/430 GPS from the 152 and had a quick question. I just watched two great tutorials from Kip On The Ground about using the Autopilot, then how to use the Garmin’s.

I know that I can enter the flight plan manually (more realism). I can also create the flight plan on say Simbrief and import. From what I understand, if I import, it will fill out the flight plan in the GPS and that will file it with ATC as well.

What I am wondering, (haven’t tried yet). If I create my flight plan on Simbrief but do not import. Once I launch my flight at the gate. When I enter in the flight plan to the GPS before contacting ATC. Is that considered “filing the plan” will ATC know the plan based on what I punched into the GPS or am I missing something.

Essentially I want to ensure I file the plan but I don’t want it to auto-magically fill out the GPS, I want to do it manually.

Thanks in advance.

Download the free program called - PMS50-GTM-750 Navigation. You can use it to create flight plan in sim, it will transfer to any plane. You can find manual and info on the website for it. Just search for it. Real World Pilot handed me this tip, and I use in the F-14 if I start out just messing around and want to do a flight to destination. You will see how easy and neat this little program is. Good Luck.

Thanks for the suggestion!

What I am trying to do, is as “real world” as possible. So in a 172 with a 530/430 the pilot would be entering everything in by hand.

What I am not sure of is how to file an IFR flight plan and not have it automatically load into the GPS. As a work around I could delete it all out and add it back in but there must be a way to file the plan within MSFS and then program the GPS manually.

“Bumping” in hopes someone has some ideas

As for what you are trying to do, filing a flight plan with MSFS ATC without having it automatically loaded to the GNS530/430, I don’t know a way to do that.

But as for your realism reason: You could just consider that your C172S “steam gauge” has a Garmin Flight Stream installation (which is a quite realistic assumption). That allows you to do, in real life, precisely what happens in the sim, namely planning your flight in a flight planning tool, filing it with ATC, and uploading it to your panel mount legacy GPS units. Along the same lines, using the sim’s VFR map or having a moving map app running on a tablet or laptop next to your sim computer is also perfectly realistic; it just simulates you using your tablet in flight like so many pilots do today.

If you want to recreate using the GNS 530/430 like it was used twenty years ago then typing in the flight plan manually is the realistic thing to do, but if you want to simulate how many pilots use it today the automatic flight plan load is perfectly reasonable.

Okay, that makes complete sense when explained like that.

I suppose flying on VATSIM would be a good scenario for manual load but either way good to know how to do it for when ATC changes your plans.

Thanks again.

All - It should be noted, that ATC-Nav System does not show every waypoint. It does show the ones it’s flying toward. If you input a STAR route and ILS RW, it will take you to that route and ILS RW. Also, ATC routinely keeps me to high, and it’s a mad scramble down to alingn with the Glideslope etc. This is in 747/787 and the free C-17 I fly. I posted checklist on 747 cold and dark, assume it’s still up, you might give it a try and let me know how it works for you. Pictures would not load to post.

There’s currently no way to file a flight plan in MSFS while in flight, as far as I can see. One feature I miss from FSX. I also would like to be able to disconnect the flight plan from the GPS when loading up the flight, and such a feature might offer that chance. Alternatively, a checkbox on the flight planner to load (or not) the plan into the avionics would be welcome.

I often fly in short bursts according to my free time, so just load up a plane at an airport with no real plan in mind. If the weather is poor, ATC will of course say the airport is closed for VFR. There’s now an ‘override’ in the ATC menu to allow you to depart VFR even in atrocious weather, which is OK in some cases, but I’d really like the option to make a flight plan with ATC without quitting back to the menu. This was great in FSX when flying VFR if the weather turned bad en route. Reason we can’t is because the flight planner is part of the world map, and there’s no mechanism to get into that while in flight. I suspect it would be too resource intensive as both are rendered in 3D. So I’m not holding my breath on that feature returning soon.

You should be able to have an option when talking to clearance frequency or if you are already in contact with approach frequency to request IFR clearance.

This is only true in the SIM. In real life you would have to call ATC
